Icky digital thermometer says 101.6 but whenever I take her temp and she doesn't have a fever it always registers a degree or more low so I think it must be higher. I gave her the regular dose of children's tylenol and she threw up not 10 minutes later so I gave her a tsp more instead of the proper dosage of a tsp and a half, because you know how bad too much tylenol is... and now I'm going online because I can't find my two best home remedy books in my piles and the almanac home remedies book sux.
I'm going to have to call and wake up my mother or take her to the emergency room if I don't get some rational thought through my respected peers here so please help with anything.
She seems fine, just a little sick and crazy hot. I have her lying on a crib mattress on the floor behind me.

A fever, burns the brain...

you must cool her...

extreme is at 105 and a tub of ice and cold water...

in your case, a cold cloth on the forehead...cool it every 10 minutes,
you must reduce the fever...

how is it now?
Is the fever down from the medicine?

I am sending Lots of Healing LOve. ...

Go to the emergency room. The best thing to bring it down is motrin but you have to wait 3 to 4 hours after tylenol

Lotus, a cool cloth, I didn't even think of that! Thank you, that is a fabulous idea.

I might end up at the emergency room but at this time she seems fine. I found this site http://kidshealth.org/parent/general/body/fever.html

what do you guys think of this info?

I was thinking about the luke-warm bath but I would like to start with the cool cloth on the forehead.
Also, nattie, I thought it was ok to take ibuprofen with tylenol? I was about to see if I had children's ibuprofen next.

I really appreciate this support. It's probably normal but a little freaky.

Also, I should mention that my daughter is 5 (a preschooler), not an infant. Lotus probably knows she isn't an infant, but I'm sure you had no idea of her age, Nattie. I just don't want to make a mistake and feeling your child that hot is scary.

It's either 3 or 4 hours apart for motrin and tylenol. if it is every 6 hours for tylenol and motrin. it can be tylenol and 3 hours later motrin. it will say on the bottle. If it is eight hours apart for motrin and tylenol it is every 4 hours. first one than the other. and like the doctor always told me you go by the weight of the baby rather than the age as far as the dosage goes

that's RIGHT! You are supposed to alternate them! Thanks so much, Nattie, I'm just not thinking clearly. She is a preschooler, I just changed my above post to make more sense. But still my baby

She is cooling with the cloth and just asked for a blanket. I told her if she finished the bottle of water I gave her I would let her have a popsicle. I want to take her temp one more time before I give her and ice pop.

I just know the fever is there to help the body and I don't want to take that away, but don't want it to get too high. I wanted to make her tea but I thought that would just make her hotter and I was getting a little nervous. I really appreciate the help.

Thank you, Lotus. I volunteered at the school field trip to the zoo today and I did wonder for a minute if she picked up something at the zoo. All of the kids tromped around the zoo and petting zoo with the animal feces and then played at the playground putting their hands on bars where dirty shoes had just been a second before etc. I had her wash and use the waterless soap stuff a lot but who knows, that can just take the good/protective bacteria away so I never know what is best in those situations.

Nattie, you have an 8 yr old? boy or girl?
Lotus has two teen daughters if I remember correctly.

I don't have gatorade, but I have a recipe for home-made whaddayacallit for dehydration. She doesn't have the runs so I think she will be ok since she just drank 8 oz of water and she will have the frozen popcicle thing in 20 minutes after I take her temp when she hasn't drank for 20 minutes.
She is talking and happy from her mattress.
I'll keep you guys posted.
Thanks again!

The fever is down enough not to be scary. Everything is fine now. Thank you for the support fellow mothers, and my LL friends on the FFA thread.

You just have to be careful with small children and fevers, because the body does not have the same regulating mechanism at that age and they can have a seizure if their temp goes too high.

Having two grown up kids, I have been through all those scary moments so here is a few things I picked up on the way.

Cold cloths always work but place on both forehead and wrists.

Seven UP is the most isotonic drink (rehydrating). Apparently it has the perfect balance of salts and sugars.
Now I read this in the Lancet (doctors medical journal) so it's not an old wives tale.

Belladonna or Chammomile (homeopathic) very good for fevers.

And I Hate the stuff but nothing, I repeat nothing, works as well for upset stomachs as FLAT coca cola.

As it also can make your toilet bowls sparkling clean, there has to be something in it that destroys stomach bugs!

In an emergency shake the bottle, add some sugar to flatten it quicker, Also supplies a moment of light relief when the bloody stuff squirts over the ceiling amd then administer....magic.

Do not drink however in moments of robust health....so not magic!!

I was thinking...

whenever any of us, get a slight fever..
we take vitamins..it's like a sign..
that our body's immune system isn't up
to par...

How's she feeling today, Mel?

I put the cloth on her neck after it warmed some on her forehead so it cooled her quickly enough. I wish I would have had some 7-up on hand, I often keep some single bottles of Sierra Mist in the cupboard for sickness but I wonder if 7-up is a better formula... I just thought it was the bubbles and mildness and sugar so any brand lemon/lime would work but maybe not! :^) Your Coke comment reminds me of the movie Doc Hollywood, Bunnies. I'll remember to get some Coke too.

I think it might be strep, Lotus. She has a sore throat today and the doctor told us to come in tomorrow morning for the strep culture. I think I'm next but I just ate a lot of garlic and took echinacia so that might help. I gave her a zinc supplement earlier in addition to a vitamin. It seems she gets sick every time after she returns from a break or long weekend from school. One of the kids picks up something somewhere at a relatives or local event and brings it to share. She was sick constantly when school first started until she developed the immunities to everything the kids were passing around. Now it is just after breaks. I think they come in contact with new people and catch stuff and then bring it to school. It's an interesting dynamic to consider now that it has slowed down some. I didn't even want to SEND her to school at the beginning, I was so "sick" of her getting sick. :^) And trying to take care of her while under the influence of those super kid germs myself.

Parenting is quite the adventure... and takes a ridiculous amount of strength when done properly.

Thanks again for everyone's help. It can be way too much for one person at times.

Hows the lil one doing?

My two youngest would run extremely high fevers when young. Always a very important indicator for me was how they are acting. I am not one to run the kids to emergency rooms for every little thing, as I don't want them to contract anything else. I have on occasion given tylenol and ibprophen when I felt the need to, I was told it was ok to do as ibprophen is an anti inflamatory and tylenol is more for pain, both fever reducers.

Alternating cold wet washclothes a must in this house, lol and remember not to let her bundle up when she is cold, use only sheets. I've also used rubbing alchohol on forehead to help reduce fever.

Not uncommon for fevers to spike around 3 in afternoon, so you can kinda watch her and see how she is acting. Like I mentioned watching how she is acting is a huge indicator for me. There were a couple times when my daughter would be running 103 and you wouldn't know it by the way she was acting.

It is soooo hard when they are throwing up, and when you have more than one sick, just make sure she stays hydrated.

Sending light and healing, good luck!

How's Rosie today, Mel??

CJ used to get these mystery-high-fevers too, every since he was small. It would inevitably happen at 2am I used to get a wet cold washcloth and cover his forehead, pressing gently. When it was hot, absorbing the heat from his body, instead of getting up and putting him down, I would still sit there with him on my lap and just wave the washcloth in the air until it had cooled off, then fold and press it to his forehead again. Usually after a half-hour of this, his temp would be down enough for us to both get some sleep for an hour or two, then repeat when he woke up again wailing.

Even now, he gets mystery-fevers, with no other symptoms other than the high fever. His body's fighting something, or else his inner thermostat just goes whacko for a few hours then self-adjusts, I dunno.....

Hope your little one is back to normal now

She seems to be completely back to normal. She woke up with a fever yesterday and by the time we made it to the doctor's office it was gone. It must have been a 24 hour something. We have been sleeping a lot so she is feeling much better. I'm just tired and have a lot to do.

Doctor told me about the B.R.A.T. diet for flu type throwing up sicknesses. Bananas Rice Applesauce Toast. I know I've heard it before but I didn't remember it. Hopefully I will now.

You all are a blessing.
