For cheap solutions ~
What about a bag of frozen peas?? (no joke)
Perhaps that might help keep down the inflammation.....
I have an inexpensive hand-held (vibrating) massager ($9.99) that I use.
I have a fabulous chiropractor, and I don't have neck pain anymore.
Hope you feel better soon.....

An infra red lamp. 5 mins morning and repeat in the evening.
You can buy the lamps quite cheaply (about £15 or 30 U.S?
I cannot wax lyrical about the benefits of these things enough.
As a healing aid they are second to none.

Do you do the spinal twist when doing yoga?
I have a feeling that might be the cause

You should see an osteopath. The site of injury could be anywhere from lower down your back and manifesting as pain in your neck from the pressure.

And in the meantime, use ice to keep the inflammation down!

I'm a big advocate of a great, well trained massage therapist. In the first car accident I was ever in, I went to a massage therapist. (I saw her in conjunction with a chiropractor, but I know you don't like them.) I know you didn't mention a car accident, but I think you would benefit from a couple of goood massages. Great for stress Anyways, she did trigger point therapy that loosened scar tissue that had formed within days of the accident (it wasn't an extremely bad accident) and prior scar tissue (I didn't know how it had gotten there, but I'd always been active..) It was painful but worth it. You never know, you could have one tight muscle or scar tissue somewhere else in your body thats contributing to all the pain in your shoulders.

You mentioned problems with your C1.. All those tense muscles.. putting pressure on that tender spot. I feel for you! Back injuries are the worst.

yea good masseuse maybe a good choice, i agree. i have a friend who practices chinese massage therapy (the kind that hurts...). once my back snapped and i became like an 80-year old grandma. i went to him and he just touched my back, and he said "do you drink lots of coffee?" and i said yes and he said i should drink more water.

what i'm saying is massage is really much deeper than just relaxing muscles. they can really tell what's going on with your whole body! who knows, your neck pain might be coming from some other reasons than the neck itself.

Lavlee-
Was your friend an experienced massage therapist? (No harm meant towards him or her if they are..) Because I know that if a person doesn't REALLY REALLY know what they're doing... it can definitely make it worse. It's so complicated the way the muscles interact I remember my therapist was pressing on a muscle in one spot and it would trigger pain in a completely seemingly unrelated area. I have a book on trigger points and its a rather lengthy book.
Anyways, if the cold is helping with the inflammation, heat would probably help relax the muscles. Alternating would probably help too. Heat before bed.

Or my favorite.. a nice relaxing bath. I love a good soak in Epsom salts. I do 2 cups of Epsom salts in comfortably hot water(for detox as well as relaxation), 5 to 10 drops of lavender, rosemary, basil.. anything that relaxes the muscles Right before bed is best. And I rinse off afterwards in luke warm water to make sure the toxins go down the drain..
I hope you feel better Oh yeah, and cute name I didn't get it til I typed it lol.
Also, how do you sleep at night? I mean, on your side, back, what kind of pillow etc..?

I wouldn't let anyone massage or manipulate anything along the entire spinal column unless they are qualified and very experienced... the whole musculoskeletal system and the nervous system are so complex and it can be detrimental to have it treated in the wrong way. I've been visiting a physiotherapist and an osteopath for about 8 months now and although they always make a difference, I'm also realising that there could be energetic reasons for my chronic problem. So while I am continuing to see my physio and osteo (because these guys are INVALUABLE to me, they really are), I am also taking arnica when necessary to reduce any inflammation... and taking steps on the etheric level as well. Just yesterday I asked the angels to remove any etheric cords that are keeping me in pain and keeping me from recovering. And what do you know, this morning I felt normal and my appointment with the physiotherapist was the best one I've had yet! My muscles felt completely normal when he pressed into them (I guess it's kind of a trigger point thing that he does when he's pressing in), as opposed to weird and over-sensitised. So at the risk of sounding like I'm somewhere in fairyland, I do think that asking the angels to remove those cords can be a useful adjunct to conventional treatment.

Wow Lavlee, that sounds really intense. All the best to you in working through whatever you need to with that. (Myself I figured out there are hurts and resentments that built up to make something that is quite thick, whether they are like straight sticks or if they are like cords connecting me to another person it's hard to say). Either way I'm thinking of ordering a custom flower essence blend to help me release things on the etheric level. Of course, still continuing with conventional treatments (although, I do know that I shouldn't have needed to continue with physical treatments for as long as I have - the recovery time should have been much shorter). I'll be ordering from http://www.nmessences.com if you're interested in looking into this yourself.

Thank you Gemminlover. Sounds like we are on the same boat. I will definitely look into flower essences. Im pretty much open to all forms of treatment. But Im a little cautious about people handling my neck now. It seems so fragile.

I am going to see an osteopath tomorrow, hoping it will be well worth the visit.
Most of all, I think this last very acute state, which brought tears to my eyes, it was so painful- was a giant wake-up call from my body. Let me know what your learn about the flower essences.
Peace....

Lavlee - how is your neck at the moment? Have you read buena's thread on "Pain changed my looks" at all?

We have shared a few ideas there about pesky necks.

Hope you're feeling better!
