i am a diagnosed coeliac (allergy to gluten) and intolerant to dairy to the point to allergy...i would LOVE to give up eating meat but i have a very high metabolic rate and burn up food very quickly leading to sudden drops in blood suagr levels. i have found in the past eating a high protein diet has been the only way to avoid these big sugar drops and keep the weight on (i know this sounds like heaven to some, but trust me, its been a tough few years....) the only 'red' meat i consume is pork i eat lots of chicken and fish i can eat soya products but only in small quantities as they upset my bowels otherwise... if anyone out there has some ideas or suggestions about how i might go about reducing the meat in my diet it would so so appreciated. p.s. i find eggs are an issue too......... Look into protein combinations--non-soy beans or lentils with non-wheaty,non-gluteny grains like amaranth. Also, quinoa. Someone here on LL was just telling me that broccoli, of all things, is packed with protein! So try a meal such as quinoa topped with broccoli that has been sauteed in olive oil and lemon juice, with some raw almonds mixed into the quinoa. IP: Logged |

thanks lucia - quinoa is something i've already tried and found it to be a really good couscous substitute! the broccoli sounds interesting...i wonder if anyone else knows more about this?i do like lentils - suppose i just need to eat more of them! am going to look in to the whole bean/protein thing. p.s. a high metabolic rate has its advantages and disadvantages can anyone suggest a good book/website? ------------------ Out of clutter find simplicity. Actually, a high consumption of animal proteins raises your metabolism, while eating a lot of vegetable proteins (found in broccoli and dark green, leafy vegetables) lowers it, while causing you to lose weight. A good book I read about this and health in general is Eat To Live by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. It obviously promotes a vegan diet, but also includes a diet that allows animal products if you still really want to eat them. The scientific evidence is very convincing. IP: Logged |

BTW.... I LOVE LENTILS! I eat alot of them and yellow dried peas. Both are rather low glycemic so won't really help much with weight gain. Garbanzo, great northern, kidney, black, basically any bean of the seed kind can help you gain however. There are many yummy ways to prepare them!Vegetarian recipes Everyday-Cooking/Vegetarian/Beans-and-Legumes vegetarian-recipes/bean-recipes Non vegetarian recipes beanbible
