Would you care to share which type you have and how you treat it? Since I found out i have it (though i'm not sure which form yet) I'm doing some research here in preperation to take care of it.

Anemias can also be caused by such conditions as external bleeding, chronic disease, pregnancy, alcoholism, bleeding disorders, infection and hereditary conditions.
Anemia may be associated with other medical conditions such as hemorrhage, ulcers, menstrual problems or cancer -- and specific symptoms of those conditions may be noticed first.

The body also has a remarkable ability to compensate for early anemia. If your anemia is mild or developed over a long period of time, you may not notice any symptoms.

Symptoms common to many types of anemia include the following:

Easy fatigue and loss of energy
Unusually rapid heart beat, particularly with exercise
Shortness of breath and headache, particularly with exercise
Difficulty concentrating
Dizziness
Pale skin
Leg cramps
Insomnia
Other symptoms are associated with specific forms of anemia.

Anemia caused by iron deficiency:

Hunger for strange substances such as paper, ice, or dirt (a condition called pica).
Upward curvature of the nails referred to as koilonychias.
Soreness of the mouth with cracks at the corners.

Anemia caused by vitamin B-12 deficiency:

A tingling, "pins and needles" sensation in the hands or feet.
Loss of sense of touch.
A wobbly gait and difficulty walking.
Clumsiness and stiffness of the arms and legs.
Dementia
Hallucinations, paranoia and schizophrenia.

Anemia caused by chronic lead poisoning:

A blue-black line on the gums referred to as a lead line.
Abdominal pain
Constipation
Vomiting

Anemia caused by chronic red blood cell destruction:

Jaundice (yellow skin and eyes)
Brown or red urine
Leg ulcers
Failure to thrive in infancy
Symptoms of gallstones

Sickle cell anemia:

Fatigue
Susceptibility to infection
Delayed growth and development in children
Episodes of severe pain, especially in the joints, abdomen and limbs

Anemia caused by sudden red blood cell destruction:

Abdominal pain
Brown or red urine
Jaundice (yellow skin)
Small bruises under the skin
Seizures
Symptoms of kidney failure

Call Your Doctor If:

Call your doctor if you notice any of these signs or symptoms of anemia.

Persistent fatigue, breathlessness, rapid heart rate, pale skin, or any other symptoms of anemia
Poor diet or inadequate dietary intake of vitamins and minerals
Very heavy menstrual periods
Symptoms of an ulcer, gastritis, hemorrhoids, or colorectal cancer
Concern about environmental exposure to lead
A hereditary anemia runs in your family and you would like genetic counseling before having a child
Women considering pregnancy -- your doctor will likely recommend that you begin taking supplements, especially folate, even before conception. These supplements benefit both mother and baby.

I'm going to pick up some beets today and roast them. Don't think Ive had them since i was a kid. They are supposed to cure anemia when eaten regularly. Eating fruits high in vitamin C helps you absorb iron from fruits and veggies too; which isnt absorbed as easily as is from meat.

Hi T

I'm reading an old book on nutritional therapy -- "Dr Wright's Guide to Healing Nutrition" by Dr Jonathan V Wright, MD, pub 1984.
Browsing the chapter about a man with irregular heartbeat, it was discovered that he was also slightly anemic. (this is when the bells went off in regards to you ) The problem is: "too much zinc with too little copper, you get anemia, PVC's (Premature Ventricular Contractions) and cholesterol abnormalities."

The patient took 30mg of zinc and 5mg of copper at different times of the day because (in theory) they might "compete" for absorption. His PVC's disappeared within a month. His anemia was gone in 3 months, reverting to a normal blood count. By 6 months, his cholesterol was 233 (down from 288) and his HDL was 47 (up from 44).

Just a thought.....

Hi 26T

Long time no speak lol.

I have something that I swear by for anemia and a great many more illnesses.

Spirulina. It's a blue green algae that is also a complete food source.

Here's all the info you need on it's nutrient content.

http://www.naturalways.com/spirulina-analysis.htm

And I just want to add that I managed to not only fall pregnant but carry my baby to term with no complications & produced a big healthy boy by taking spirulina in spite of having poly cystic ovarian syndrome & not taking medication or having surgery for it.

Here's another link about it.

Okay, I've got to start using that "Email Notification" box when I post threads! Thanks ladies!

Zala ! I'm sorry I missed this. Thank you! I keep getting told that the irregular beatings of my heart (yeah, i'm still getting them every so often) probably have to do with stress related issues, but I think there is more to it than that. And probably is more likely due to deficiencies like your info suggests. That's a great piece of into to know. I appreciate you sharing it with me. With all of these vitamins and minerals working together or depending on one another for proper absorbtion in the body, it goes to show how a diet consisting of mainly live natural foods, which already contain their own compatible ratios, is essential to health.

Spanky! I think you were spunki, right?

That is great news because I have a Spirulina based supplement! The problem is, is I havent been taking it regularly because it has to be refrigerated and I forget it's there...away from all my other supplements. lol I just took some now and thank you for the great info. I'm going to keep on top of this. I think the anemia is why I am suffering from terribly painful and complicated periods. I had a sonogram done and apparently everything looks fine and I don't have any ovarian cysts or anything like i thought. Anyway...

This is the product I have. You may want to look into it. Thanks again.

Hi T

It's spunky alright! How are you?

I'm glad you enjoyed the link. I found it very informative about how the vitamins & minerals work in our body & it made me realize that we are wasting our money buying all these supplements individually. That's why I love spirulina so much.

Thanks for the link BTW. I also wanted to let you know that I also have had some recent trouble with a rapid heartbeat on occasion, usually at night when I go to bed. What I learnt is that it is caused by a lack of magnesium & calcium, which was leeched from my body due to me taking an apple cider vinegar tonic all of last year. I no longeg take the ACV tonic & take ginger instead for any digestive upsets.

Check out this link on Magnesium

Great to talk to you again

Hi sweetie,

I just checked out that product you have. I think it's great, however I'm going to insert a "but" right here.....BUT It is a waste of time having all those extra ingredients along with the spirulina. Spirulina actually does a better job than all those other supplements & they are a waste of money as well being a pain in the butt due to being kept in the fridge. I had the same problem when I bought a product called vital greens....Must be refrigerated & truthfully, if something is not in my face I won't remember to take it. So now I keep my spirulina caps in the cupboard right next to my coffee & I remember to take them.

Recommendations for additional supplements for whole body health are to take an Omega 3/6 any variety be it fish oil or primrose or flax seed along with some vitamins C to make sure you absorb all the Iron & of course the calcium powder I add to my smoothies.

I thoroughly recommend that you check out the difference in calcium supplements because just like spirulina vs synthetic iron supplement, they are not all easily digestible by the body so something like Lifestream or ocean milk would be the way to go.

Sorry I have gone on & on about it but I'm so passionate about not being ripped of with these things. You think your doing the right thing and buying what a doctor recommends & then you find out that your body cannot absorb most of the supplement anyway & to me it's like flushing your hard earned money straight down the toilet, literally.

Okay.....I have finished ranting, apologies all round folks.

WOW Thank you for that very important info, Spanky!

Someone once told me ACV helps to breed candida too? It just doesnt seem natural to me, so I don't take it anymore.

Don't be sorry for sharing what you know! I appreciate it and am glad you shared. I don't want to waste my money either. What do you think of chlorella? When I have some extra cash I will pick up some plain old Spirulina.

Something else I was taking - though I've kind of gotten sick of it (i don't have much of a sweet tooth, and sweet things usually make me feel ill) is raw honey. I heard this is a "superfood" too. And can help with all kinds of ailments and allergies.

Yeah, i should get some more fish oil. I was taking some lemon flavored one from a bottle awhile back. I'd put it in vanilla yogurt - yum!

Thanks for all the great info, Spanks!
You should come to this forum more often.

Hi. I got a Cal/Mag/D supplement today. He was out of Spirlulina and I couldve gotten it somewhere else but I told him I'd come back next week when he said he'd have it in again, because I like to help support the "little guys".
I also got some Emergen-C to get my vit C in.

Thanks again for your advice, Spanky.

Hi T

You are welcome darlin', anytime. I think I will take you up on your advice & pop in here a little more often.

Now on to business

quote:
What do you think of chlorella?

I used to think it was great but now I have read up on spirulina a bit further I see now that it is a waste of money & effort. Spirulina out does Chlorella by a mile & is more easily absorbed to boot. All the info you need about Spirulina vs chlorella is on one of those links I posted, um specifically the one about it's nutrient content I believe. I know there is a lot too read on that page but if you can sit still long enough, it's worth the full read.

Now I'm going to sign off because I'm late for my morning date with my banana smoothie & spirulina caps.

Luv ya

Hey T

I just wanted to stop by & let you in on a few more of my cheats, lol.

I don't know about you but I get lazy with taking all my supplements, I mean seriously I think I rattle when I walk after popping all those pills, YUCK. So I cheat as much as I can.

I am also taking MACA to balance my hormones because PCOS is a hormonal roller coaster, yay!!! So my new routine is to make myself a banana smoothie so to not waste food & keep it as simple as possible I freeze any bananas that are too far gone to eat on there own, a) for smoothies & b) for making banana bread on occasion.

Spunky's Super Smoothie recipe.....

1 frozen banana chopped
1 cup of soy milk
2 teaspoons of honey
1 teaspoon of MACA powder
1 teaspoon of calcium powder dissolved in 1/2 cup of water

Now whizz it up to a frenzy & make sure all the frozen banana is incorporated along with the honey.

In summer I like to add a few ice cubes to make it like a thick shake, yummy!

That delicious drink is then accompanied by all the tablets ie; 6 spirulina 3 or 4 slow release Vit C tablets & an omega supplement & I'm all done for the morning! The slow release Vit C is key for me because I only have to take them in the morning & they last 8 hours.

I find this works for me because it's simple & also because I can't face solid food for breakfast.

What kind of raw honey are you taking? Have you looked into manuka honey? That's the one that has anti bacterial properties. It's incredibly expensive so I only use it when I have a bacterial infection in the throat or digestive tract.

I was anaemic for several years, probably because I transitioned to a vegetarian diet at a young age without all the necessary information. By the time I was clued up it was too late and my hb levels were very low. I actually had to have a blood transfusion as the levels were affecting another health issue from healing. It runs in my family too.

After I had spinal surgery the levels dropped again, right down to 3. Therefore another rather urgent transfusion was needed. Since then my levels have been a consistent 12.

I bought some organic tablets of the algae mentioned above but didn't know until they arrived that the recommended dose is six tablets per day :/

Just ran across this tonite reading at Dr. Weil's website.....

What are the signs of a deficiency?
Symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency include fatigue, muscle weakness, shortness of breath, dizziness, numbness, heart palpitations, bleeding gums and mouth sores, nausea, poor appetite and diarrhea. Symptoms may present themselves slowly and may not be recognized for some time. A deficiency of B12 can produce pernicious anemia, which can lead to memory loss, confusion and even dementia.

Thanks, Z. Yeah, it's pretty serious stuff. I got a letter saying I have to make another appt to go in. It's probably from a B12 deficiency, i would think. We'll see.

I found the best thing since sliced bread (which is actually baaad )

Trader Joe's Steamed & Peeled Baby Beets
Ready to eat hot or cold

TJ's Steamed & Peeled Beets are ready to just open and eat, either cold or warmed. These beets, exactly the same product and preparation as you would find at a farmer's market in France are in fact produced for us in France. The beet, a vegetable which usually requires somewhat lengthy (and messy) preparation, is now ready to go and just as healthy and delicious as if you cooked it yourself. Absolutely nothing has been added to these beets. Take care when opening the inner package! The juice stains.

I've been eating these cold with garlic Hummus and omg, delicious. And I'm sure to pair it with some EmergenC

Makes a great snack or light meal.

Oh and Spanky, you asked about the honey. I have YS Organic Bee Farms Raw Honey. One of the healthfood stores not too far away carries all kinds of exotic ones. Some are really expensive. When this runs out, i think i'll try something else. Maybe the manuka honey.
