I was born eating potato chips and I shall die eating potato chips in my last meal. I love potato chips. I buy Kettle brand Bakes so they are only 3 g. fat per serving. Very yummy. So what/why is my obsession with potato chips? Every day at 3 p.m.-ish I crave salty, crunchy, potato chips. WHY? Sometimes I even get cranky if I don't get my potato chips. Want to make me happy? Send me potato chips. IP: Logged |

Neph~~~Me luvs taters too!!! You ask why you crave them, round mid-late afternoon? Blood sugar...simple...blood sugar drops in women around this time. I had to give up taters (and all other carb-loaded goodies) cause my blood sugar was going caty-wonkas and affecting my already altered brain chemistry. We tend to crave carbs when we need either a fix of blood sugar for energy or for mental well-being. Especially in women, around the mid-late afternoon (if one has taken in carbs earlier in the day) this is when the blood sugar wanes and sends out the craving of more to the body. Gee...Zala...wanna just grab that tater-pic outta the desktop screen...but..I must refrain.. Crap..so sad! IP: Logged |

I haven't eaten or craved potato chips for ages!I liked the kind of chips (they called them crisps over there) I had when I lived in London. Cafe Nero sold great "hand-baked"(???)potato chips *yum* I enjoyed the ones sold at Watson's in Singapore, too! Hi Hippichick,I was wondering if it was blood sugar too, but then wondered why I crave them instead of something sweet? I saw on TV recently that eating salt gives the body an uplifted "anti-depressant" feeling........So perhaps salt helps we "wake up" at this time of day too? I just love the crunchy ssalty taste of potato chips. I also love them with a sandwich for lunch. Like I said, the safest ones are those Kettle bakes. If I eat any others, believe me they do show up on my thighs right away. IP: Logged |

Hey Neph!!!Carbs are carbs in the form of cookies, pasta or starches. I have this theory about desert. I think, perhaps, the custom of entertaining our taste buds with sweets after a large meal came about due to the carb-based diets that most folks enjoy. The old food pyramid instructed us to make the base of our meals with carbs, bread products, etc. Carbs, in whatever form, candy, cookies, bread, pasta, potatos, are quickly processed in the body, first spiking the blood sugar then dropping our blood sugars like a rock, thus leaving us craving.....more carbs!!! The body is screaming out for more sugar (again it does not matter what form the sugar is in) and for most folks this translates into a craving via a quick fix like sweets. Some people crave sweets, some pasta, some breads, some potatos, etc. I have never been a sweet person, either, but when my blood sugar has dropped, after spiking, I crave potatos! A few weeks ago I spent most of my days off sleeping, all day, all night. I think I was making up for 47 years of not sleeping well , but the most excellent thing about those days of sleeping was the 8 or so potato and egg tacos I enjoyed! Yummy, yummy taters! The combo of the potatos and the flour tortillas released seratonin in my head and placed me in a blissfull state of enchantment that NO drug could ever do. I have just ridded myself of the 4 extra pounds those lucious tacos placed on me, but how great it was! carry on with the taters!!! t~~~ ps I love cashews, too! IP: Logged |

Hippichick,Thanks for the info. It's basic, yet it makes a lot of sense as to why many people crave sweets, desserts, carbohydrates, pastry...and all that. Nephthys You are funny!
