I started building up my tolerance to capsaicin (the chemical responsible for making hot peppers hot) for various health reasons, and I'm discovering some unexpected benefits. Capsaicin, in high amounts, triggers the release of endorphins; the closest thing to morphine produced by the human body. Twice now, after my two biggest "pepper binges", I've found myself in a state which I haven't experienced since my late teens, when I experimented with pain killers. Sitting there in a lounge chair, warm goodness bathing my muscles and limbs, a cryptic smile on my lips... This is the life. Found an article on it, too: http://www.economist.com/displaystory.cfm?story_id=12792719 IP: Logged |
