Hi there I never expected it "NAM MYOHO RENGE KYO".Yes I'm very much practicing it since past eight months or so and I must tell you that it has brought tremendous change in me.Of all the world were would I find anyone it is in LINDA LAND.Thank lord I happen to stumble across it by chance otherwise I had no idea this site ever existed.THANKS TO PEOPLE WHO ARE ALL BEHIND IT.

Well,to begin with NAM is a sanskrit word meaning to say DEVOTION,rest are Chinese words MYOHO meaning the MYSTIC LAW,RENGE means the LOTUS FLOWER and KYO means the SUTRA.Hence,when we chant "NAM MYOHO RENGE KYO" it means I DEVOTE MY LIFE TO THE MYSTIC LAW OF CAUSE AND EFFECT.

As you know all the teachings of Lord Buddha are known as the SUTRAS and one of them is the LOTUS SUTRA which is said to be the highest and true teachings of Lord Buddha and the title of LOTUS SUTRA is called "MYOHO RENGE KYO."

The person to propagate the LOTUS SUTRA was Japanese Tendai Priest NICHIREN DAISHONIN (1222-1282)who is also known as the BUDDHA OF THE LATER DAY. He was the one to add the word NAM to the title of LOTUS SUTRA hence giving it much more inner meaning.Therefore, chanting of this mantra daily with total devotion is said to lead you directly to ENLIGHTENMENT in this very life.However, you need to practice it under the strict guidance and advise of accomplished person(mentors),I QUOTE:-"One will meet his Master when the Student is ready"-LINDA GOODMAN(HA..HA..)

Anyways, on serious note,sometimes this philosophy based on Lotus Sutra is also called NICHIREN DAISHONIN'S BUDDHISM.However,unfortunately due to the differences among the many priests after NICHIREN DAISHONIN it got divided into many sects and one of them is called SOKA GAKKAI meaning to say VALUE CREATING SOCIETY which again amongst all the sects is said to be the true form of NICHIREN DAISHONIN'S BUDDHISM and is under the current guidance of our mentor DR. DAISAKU IKEDA who has been commemorated in more than 60 countries worldwide for his contribution towards WORLD PEACE.I don't know if they have any official website but this I'm sure we have members throughout the world and is the fastest growing organization in the world today called the SOKA GAKKAI INTERNATIONAL(SGI)simply because the philosophy to follow is so simple "SUFFER WHAT IS THERE TO SUFFER AND ENJOY WHAT IS THERE TO ENJOY".Well,if this interest you why don't you google search about the SOKA GAKKAI FAMILY and about our mentor DR.DAISAKU IKKEDA,I'm not sure from where you belong but I'm sure we have members in your country as well, maybe who knows in your locality itself.GOODLUCK

YES,you got me right, you should not be chanting on your own because there are some basic things to follow, more importantly you've the right to know exactly what it is all about,I've seen other posts in this site ,it seems many people are really not so sure about it but I've no confusion of it since I've been practicing it for the past 8 months or so and it has indeed made a lots of difference in my life.

Well, there isn't any set of hard and fast rules to follow simply because LORD BUDDHA as you know he was the ENLIGHTENED one, hence He knew exactly what would be coming in the future,He knew there would be chaos throughout the world,people would have no time and people would begin to ask questionS regarding their very own existence.That is why he saved this philosophy of LOTUS SUTRA for the people of LATER DAY that is US.

The SOKA GAKKAI(Value Creating Society) organization which follows the philosophy of NICHIREN DAISHONIN'S BUDDHISM is based upon three basic things:-
1.DOCUMENTARY:-i.e. whether it is based upon the true teaching or not which is the foremost target of any philosophy worldwide.
2.THEORY:-i.e. is it PRACTICAL or LOGICAL enough??
3.ACTUAL PROOF:-i.e. Actual result of the doctrine when put into practice.

From what I've gathered (so for, not done yet) SGI's philosophy is that enlightenment is attainable by everyone and anyone regardless of race, age, creed etc. It teaches people that they can gain control over their lives and attain true happiness through inner change.
That one's happiness is kind of like a butterfly effect meaning it can be helpful to others. SGI encourages this. To contribute to the well being of friends family and community, but it begins with the individual.

I get chills when I type this and ponder on it because I know in my heart that this is my way.

Am I doing ok so far with understanding?

It gives me tremendous joy to know that you’ve made the right start, yes you have hit the nail on it’s head. The Philosophy rejoiced by every members of Soka Gakkai is about bringing JOY,PEACE & HAPPINESS to every living soul in this world through HUMAN REVOLUTION,i.e. inner change in you.
NAM MYOHO RENGE KYO is basically a form of meditation done with focused mind and usually when we chant,we chant for WISDOM, COURAGE AND COMPASSION and this is precisely what I feel we lack in our life. Also, the other main purpose of Soka Gakkai is KOSENRUFU i.e. Declaring and Spreading the Words of Buddha for World Peace.(Buddha resides in everyone)
Well, I come from a small Himalayan place called Sikkim i.e. squeezed between Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet and we have around 60 members who are practicing this philosophy and is still counting. We all meet at least once in a week to chant together or to hold some other Kosenrufu activities as done elsewhere in the world at the same time and day and during those meeting specially when we have a meeting called ZADANKAI we are supposed to share our experiences so as to encourage our fellow members. You know what?? I’m yet to share my experience with anyone, so you’ll be the first one to hear it, so HOLD ON...
I was introduced to this faith by my far away relative(God Bless Him) 8 months ago . So, I started chanting 10 mnts in the morning and 10 mnts in the evening according to the guidelines as given to me by my senior members ,now I’m chanting for 45 mnts.During first month or so I couldn’t make out any differences it made but now it is all so apparent. My life was quite monotonous and I was bored in my life, I thought I was quite happy and contend in my life but I wasn’t so, due to which my relation with all my family members especially with my wife was getting worse day by day, my relation with my parents wasn’t good either( it isn’t unusual for us to stay with our parents even when we have our own family since we come from such a different culture than yours.)well my seniors always said that if you chant for 1 hour you’ll see the change in yourself and if you chant for 2 hours you’ll see the change in others, it is not necessary that you should chant for 1 hr or 2 hrs in one sitting, it is the total sum of the chanting you did during the whole day in different sittings. Well, I can see the change in myself now, before I used to be an arrogant fool with to much of pride in myself and I used to be very short tempered, but now without any real effort I’m able to control my emotions(which otherwise I found very hard to do so),my relation with my wife and my parents have become a very HAPPY ONE, everyone seems to love me and respect me, my life condition has also improved a lot, I just seem to be happy all the time without any reason, all my worries, my anxieties have dissipated totally, I feel very strange at times how this mystic law really works. Someone rightly said that Happiness is our birthright, it is just that we forgot to be so..anyways Soka Gakkai taught to me to be happy again in my life and I know this is just the beginning. This is nothing compared to the experiences I’ve heard from some of the senior members ...How they’ve won long pending court cases, how somebody was saved from major accidents and how somebody got financial breakthroughs..and many more the lists are endless. BELIEVE ME THESE ARE ALL REAL.Sometimes, NAM MYOHO RENGE KYO is also regarded as WISH GRANTING JEWEL because whatever you chant for shall be manifested, it is just the matter of when..it all depends upon your ICHININ(determination) because the more you chant the more benefits you’ll get.Also,I would like to mention here that when you chant NAM MYOHO RENGE KYO,all the heavenly deities are evoked who shall protect you and all your family members from all evil and harm.
You have said that you have located some Soka Gakkai members in Manhattan,PL.go ahead I know it is worth the try and I’m sure you won’t be disappointed .Yes, you are right anyone despite his religion, caste or creed anyone can practice it, you need not give up your current religion or your daily rituals whatever you are into, to practice this wonderful Philosophy of NICHIREN DAISHONIN.
I always remember the song that our good Linda has referred to ON A CLEAR DAY...I don’t know how long will it take but someday I hope to see FOREVER and EVER on that CLEAR day...

I am in such deep appreciation of your help, I would say you have no idea how important this is to me, but I know that you do know. Each time I read about anything pertaining to this way of life in your posts or even in websites, I get butterflies, comparable to falling in love for the very first time. I FEEL it and it feels wonderful and I have to get to this place in Manhattan, I'm being called to research this.
Your previous story sounds similar to mine. I'm not very depressed, but I have my moments. But after I send my son to school, and I get my school work and work work done, I sit and feel, empty, unfulfilled, like something is missing.
I've always been drawn to Eastern philosophy. I don't have a religion, although, I've dabbled in many faiths, I've always said Buddhism has always resonated with me the most.
Years ago one of my neighbors told me that she renounced Christianity and is now a Buddhist and that she chants daily and with her circle. She no longer needed her antidepressants and she lost weight. She told me, "I will prove it to you, write what you want and chant for it, you will get it!"
She always invited me to her group, I declined because I wanted to discover my own group and my own path, however, I always remembered her words.
A very close friend of mine also chants, but she does it on her own with her 3 children, although her life isn't perfect, she is a kind, understanding and amazing person. She is also the owner of two companies in real estate and interior design, I adore her and she is my mentor.
So I know in my heart the wonderful effect chanting can bring into many lives and I feel like I want to be a part of this new movement.
It's centered in love and selflessness it sounds good and feels good to me. My body has never reacted this way to information, EVER. I have to follow this.
