What exactly is Reiki? How can one learn it? Anyone ever had any experiences with it they can share?

It is working with the person's etheric energy field.

I think of it like an etheral massage, helps to unblock negative energy and release it.

It works with the chakras though. I don't know too much but I think that anyone can learn to be a pratcitioner which I don't agree with unless they have a degree of spiritual understanding.
A person needs to be attuned by a master practitioner before they begin training.

You are right Quinnie...and I think it's too easy to hand out attunements and courses these days- where's the deep teaching and the feeling for understanding the etheric layers?
I was attuned a long time ago- but it wasn't until I actually spiritually understood massage/ energy/ hands on work that it suddenly clicked as to what I was doing with my hands!

You can feel and see the etheric with work, and you must be really determined to find and heal problems- it has to come from your heart to want to help.

I can easily do it for my children and partner, even my cat, but I don't know how I'd be on a stranger- purely because I don't know them and I wouldn't be sure what I was looking for unless I spent time with them.
But that's just me.
I'm sure there a more powerful intuitive healers out there.

Reiki is great, I would recommend being attuned and doing a course- but I prefer the age of the master to be beyond the age of 60, there's something deepening about the wisdom of someone older- than say someone in their 30s.

I'm only 26, I am legally qualified to be a teacher, but that is ridiculous.

Maybe another time!

She's not just looking at it; she's interacting with it…I’m seeing how the act of relating to a flower appears to be so simple. Yet, it takes a tremendous amount of courage to make such a “simple” act important. Now, the lotus is floating away.”

Etheric?

Do you actually physically touch the person?

I think I may have done Reiki accidentally a few times. When I massage people I feel like I tap into them spiritually. At least when I feel the connection. At times I even have the urge to massage strangers, or people I have just met. Something tells me they need it. Not so much the sore aching muscles but maybe the physical touch that extra something I feel at times when I'm giving a massage. Does that sound weird?

Not at all, I get the same feelings and can often tell where someone needs a massage the most. You should take a reiki course, you sound like someone who would enjoy it.

I don't know were or how

My cousin knows someone who does reiki but hasn't told me details. My aunt told me that I shouldn't because you absorb too much from the other person and I told her it doesn't matter I already absorb everyone's emotions lol.

Hmm, I guess Google would be a good place to start then.
If you do it right I don't think absorbing should be a problem, or no one would do it. I'm sorry, I'm not really qualified to give advice on reiki, I'm just speaking from my experiences when I massage people.

I've had an attuenment to Reiki level one, however I've not had any confidence to use it yet, as I have mixed feelings about what Reiki is, whether it is something we can all tap into that people can give any name- whether or not it is ethical to charge huge sums of money for attunements to something that may be available to us all for free, and tell people they need to be attuned in order to be able to have access to it.....

Also, I feel uneasy when people call upon ascended masters and angels for assistance etc during meditations, which this Reiki teacher did. She was over 60 I think, with direct lineage to the founder of what we call Reiki, Dr Usui. So my lineage comes from Dr Usui too now.

Overall it was a great experience though.

Can anyone advise me on the mixed feelings I have? I would appreciate any inspiration anyone might have in regards to that.

Oh, also I don't like the healing position where the healer places their hands over the bum/ lower back in a "T" position.

LTT- I understand your mixed feelings. I suppose the "charging huge sums of money" is equivalent to doctors charging so much that we need health insurance to visit one, and if we don't have health insurance we're screwed. Then there's the dichotomy of people being unsure of doctors that don't charge as much. I think what it comes down to is what you do with it. I wouldn't take up that complaint as one on Reiki as a whole but on the people who exploit it.

Massage is as intimate as Reiki from the sounds of it and people exploit that too. From customers wanting "extras" to the practitioners that allow it. I resent it when something that is supposed to be healing is associated with this sexual connotation. I suppose the same with anything else involving being healed. It's become this "I'll save your life, you'll just have to give me all your money" kind of act. I may be exaggerating a bit but it's to prove my point.

If you want, LTT, come teach me

i was going to have 3 months of sessions from a friend training to be a 'reiki master' (who had been atuned by a 'master' - note; through a government inducted scheme)

i had such huge anxiety and curiousness about it...something felt strange though, so i offered myself up as a 'tester' after some intense meditating on the subject.

...but the session left said friend on a high, and myself a little freaked after feeling 'entranced'. it unblocked something, im pretty sure i 'spoke' to someone close who i lost a few years ago, but not in the normal sense of communication - after feeling an incredible amount of pain running through my body, but then a kind of peace followed, then achiness. a week of madness thus ensued; so i think there's alot to be said for the mixing of etheric bodies and open chakra vortexes

as for 'costing for service' - i heard that the proper respect of this is a donation made by the receiver to their level of realistic income, whether it be money (small or large amounts) or goods/ services in receipt. so anything with 'set' charges would be slightly dubious i feel (like the local beauty salons that are offering 'Reiki Sessions' per the hour)

Littlecloud, I would teach you if it was that easy to....I think it's something to be best learned amongst others in person however....I did my attunement in November of 2009 and have not done any Reiki since, so this is quite a while ago now.

There are some good books about it though.

Interestingly it was at the time I was doing my attunement that my other half and I started communicating.

I am a level III Reiki Master/Reiki Teacher. I have been doing Reiki for 9 years and I am under 60. I am 42.

We are ALL born with the capability to heal. Reiki accentuates that process. That is the beauty - it is not only a select few who are chosen to be part of this Age of Aquarius - we are all One. reiki can never harm.

Ariefairy, not sure why your chakras were left wide open. Reiki generally is not a system that opens chakras unless the practitioner has used it in conjunction with other techniques. It is a lceansing, a clearing, a healing of all levels. The practitioner should have ended the session by touching your feet - groundign you. Reiki CAN affect you by leaving you feel like you are a bit ungrounded but is due to the healing process. It sounds like it affected you pretty intensely. It is intended to clear you. Whether that be physical, mental, emotional, You should have been told this feeling can occur and that you should go out for a walk, sit in nature, walk barefoot or do any other sort of grounding techniques. It had a greater impact on you than most people. A week is also a long time. Not sure what is going on with that but I hope you paid extra attention to yourself during that time frame.
There are many people out there who do charge a lot for atunements. We all need to survive but when it comes down to overinflated prices for a profit it takes a direction of greed. Everyone should learn reiki. There are aspects of the Reiki community that will pronounce that if you were not trained by their school, you are not as credible of a Reiki practitioner. This is crap.
Do I beleive that there is an aspect that we schooled practitioners should continue on our Spiritual path, yes. We are all born with the capacity of being a capable healer and Reiki is one form of healing that makes that possible. I am not syaing that one should not undertake spiritual studies. We should - there are Laws taht govern us not are not earlthy laws. Understanding this and working with what those laws are, working with the energy from a place of knowledge and wisdom enhances the healer's healings.

There aer those who feel that since we are all born with the ability to heal, reiki should be open to anyone. There are others who take the "elitist" approach. Again, REIKI CAN NEVER HARM. In energy work, that is a pretty big statement and that is why there are so many schooled in it.

Littlecloud, I realized I did not realyy say what Reiki is and I can go into more detail if you want some after having read these other posts.

Walter Lubeck has some very good books abour reiki.

If you can explain further that would help. Also how can you tell if someone is doing it "correctly"? I want to learn but I want to know that the person that might be able to teach me knows what they're doing.

I put correctly in quotes because I'm not sure that there is a certain way to do it.

LLT - I can't tell how to feel and that what you feel is wrong. I, too, call on my guides and angels when I am doing a session. I can liken it to meditating alone or in a group. When there is more thean one person the engergy is heightened during the meditation. It is the synergy, it is the unity of Spirit.

The same holds true for Reiki. Our guides and angels are energy. We are energy even though our forms are different. The person who is giving the Reiki is not the reiki. The reiki is the energy. My body is a conduit for the energy to flow through, whether it be going into or out of a person. I ask for their guidance and assistance so that the receiver can get the most out of the session. So that they can heal. There is no ego in reiki. Well, there should not be. I can't take credit for any other persons healing. It is the energy that begins the process and the receiver to take and do with it what they choose that creates the healing. Yet I do call myself a healer.

Littlecloud - All that I just wrote is what makes reiki available to anyone who wnats to have the atunements. I need to preface this with the fact there are people who teach privately, semi-privately and they can interview people to see why they want the atunements. As I said reiki can never harm. Yet if someone wants the atunements for their own personal gain of "power", "ego" they may have to find someone else to give them the atunements. Someone who is not as discriminating. Reiki has changed my life. With every attunement something within has shifted. it has been a process for me. hence the reason that I waited about 3years between each attunement. In some schools you are asked to wait and in others you can get all 3 degrees in a weekend. I personally think getting all 3 degrees in one weekend is way too much overload. The attunements clear and shift energy. I am not saying that this happens and you need to do nothing. You can choose to standstill or you can choose to take the opportunity, since the door has been opened, to grow and learn and work with the energy that resides outside, beyond us yet it is us. Each attunement is a step taht leads you higher and higher - deeper and deeper. The Source within awakens to work with the grid of Universal energy which is our point here on earth.

Many Blessings to you

I need to clarify something that I said above. I wrote
quote:
Reiki generally is not a system that opens chakras unless the practitioner has used it in conjunction with other techniques.

I am reading one of my Walter Lubeck books and the page section that I opened to was regarding this very topic so I felt I needed to share this information. Reiki can be used to open chakras but it is not part of the basic Usui method even though it is an expansion of that method. Whenever a chakra has been opened, it should be closed to protect a person's growth process from outside influences. a receiver who has had an open chakra during a session should be instructed to nap aferwards.

When looking for a Reiki teacher, what should I look for? Are there questions I should ask, any specific answers I should expect? Things of that sort.

I too am a Reiki Master and teacher. I was taught by William Lee Rand who was taught by Mrs. Takata's grand-daughter in Hawaii. Dr. Usui did not found Reiki. We actually don't know who the "true" founder was. We believe that it was lost for centuries but Usui "re-discovered" it on Mount Kurama-Yama in Japan while meditating. We also believe that Christ practiced a form of Reiki.

Reiki is essentially spiritually-guided life-force energy. It is an intelligent and intuitive energy- it knows what to do. Once you are attuned to Reiki, you don't have to think about how to heal the other person. In fact, thinking about how to help the other person will get in the way of what needs to be done. You essentially must let yourself be guided by Reiki.

You don't necessarily have to touch the person to administer Reiki. Reiki can be administered through the hands, feet and even beamed through the eyes. I have conducted several telephone conversations where I administered Reiki right through the other person's telephone and the Reiki traveled from that person's hand through the body.

I personally don't think age has anything to do with wisdom but perhaps that is just me. I have known people, both young and old, who were wise beyond their years.

Although I firmly believe Reiki is for everyone, some people are naturally gifted in the metaphysical & healing arts and may progress much more rapidly than others. I also believe you can give Reiki to strangers. Compassionate, universal love helps in administering Reiki to others as is living by the 5 Reiki principles.

Choosing a Reiki teacher should be based on your familiarity and comfort level with the individual. If you are unfamiliar with the instructor, ask them to conduct a Reiki treatment on you. Personally, I tend to be a perfectionist and need someone who not only is a good instructor (in teaching the history and mechanics of Reiki) but someone who also is gifted in spirituality & metaphysics.

Here is William Lee Rand's website that has a lot of answers to your questions: http://www.reiki.org
See the Reiki FAQ for more info. William Lee Rand's company also publishes a quarterly Reiki magazine which is very informative.

There are free attunements monthly here along with manuals for each level and a community forum. It's great if you don't have the money. http://www.theholisticcare.com/attunement%20request.htm

Also, I'd like to say reiki can be dangerous. If you have active kundalini, reiki can spike it, and hello psychosis!

Joking, but it can cause psychosis at extremes.. If you have kundalini and you're barely functioning.. very bad juju.. can lose jobs that way.
