Diet: First and foremost, I lowered my sodium intake (stopped adding extra salt to food and ate fewer processed foods) and upped my potassium levels (two bananas per day, a glass or two of orange juice, and the occasional salad with raisins and sunflower seeds). Less fast food and more fresh fruits and vegetables are always a good step in the right direction.Supplements: 1000 mg of Calcium with 500 mg of Magnesium (always take with a 2 to 1 ratio) at night before bed on an empty stomach (magnesium should be taken on an empty stomach only) 500 mg of L-Arginine on empty stomach first thing in the morning (helps body to create nitric oxide) 400 mg of garlic (equivalent to 1200 mg of fresh garlic cloves) 800 mcg of folic acid (lowers homocysteine levels) Note: It goes without saying that you should reduce your stress levels; however, once blood pressure goes down, stress does as well. I feel like nothing could stress me out. I'm just chillin'. My diastolic was through the roof, and now it's at 88 (80 is normal). I still have a ways to go, but at least I'm heading in the right direction. I'm thinking in another week or so, I will stabilize around 120/80. *fingers crossed* ------------------ "Never mentally imagine for another that which you would not want to experience for yourself, since the mental image you send out inevitably comes back to you." YAY!!!!!!I'm so proud of you Randall!!! I think cardiovascular exercise should help too..it definitely makes the heart stronger. (sorry if I'm repeating info) That calcium/magnesium combo will help your bones too. Recently I've just started adding different spices instead of salt all the time. Stuff like pepper, oregano, thyme, curry, paprika, even cinnamon. Cinnamon is good at preventing Alzheimers. IP: Logged |

Randall,You are good example that some people can be their own doctors or healers. Bad is, I like only fresh food what means this garlic (from pharmacy) is nothing for me. B. ------------------ A friend is someone who knows all about you and and still likes you. Elbert Hubbard IP: Logged |

I'm not sure even though I've had my BP taken a lot during last pregnancy...it went sky high for a while but like you, I became vigilant.I am not good at remember numbers. Very good news Randall ------------------ “It’s an interesting thing. Seeing Kuan Yin relating to a flower so intently. Randall, pulse rates vary. Extremely fit people will have extremely low rates. The average is between 60 and 100. For someone extremely fit it could be as low as 40. If it is above 100 on a regular basis, that is known as tachycardia and not a good thing. It also depends on your age- baby, adult etc. Many adults are around 80 but anywhere between 60 and 100, is a-okay. Smoking cigarettes, caffeine, etc will make your BP rise. So, always wait a while after before taking your BP (if you do those things). Annnnnd lastly, fantastic job! *Edited- also the best time to check yer pulse is as soon as yu wake up in the am! IP: Logged |

It's natural to have elevated blood pressure during pregnancy. That's an "at rest" pulse, right? I need to exercise more. Maybe more brisk walking (20 minutes a few times a week). But today, it's high again. Does a cold make it go up? ------------------ "Never mentally imagine for another that which you would not want to experience for yourself, since the mental image you send out inevitably comes back to you." In school we were mostly taught salt, smoking, caffeine and alcohol make your bp go up. I don't think a cold will, but I am not saying I am positive. I do believe certain cold medicines / flu medicines can raise it. And also, stress that's a big one too. At rest is just basically when you aren't doing anything. Like if you are walking or running or moving about your pulse rate will rise. Like when you exercise you are supposed to use a chart to see what the highest your pulse should get, and if you go over that limit then you need to relax a bit. The closer you get your bp to normal the better. It's a bigger deal than many realize. basically if it is high you are forcing your heart to work harder. That is alot of pressure to put on one organ to run the whole body. You are getting closer. Blood pressure can change just watch salt, no smoking, no caffeine, and try not to stress. I know all this sadly I don't live by it lol. But, what you're doing is great and I would not worry too much if it is a bit higher when you have a cold. It could be the meds, I know when we refer to stress causing high bp we think of mental stress..worrying etc. But having a cold puts stress on you phsically so that very well could be it. You're doing great and I bet it'll go down once the cold is gone! IP: Logged |

Thank you for thinking of me Randall, but I really am not a healthy person. I just know select things from being an EMT. Ask me about healthy foods or radiation or most the other things here and I'd just have to goole :/ She does fine here herself. And, I don't have to be a mod to stick around. I'm here mod or not and I will be! I just don't feel knowledgable in this subject to really contribute. But you are very kind. IP: Logged |

Yeah, I just read the warning on the cold medicine, and it says not to take it if you have high blood pressure, so it probably raised it.IP: Logged |
