I'm trying a few out over awhile (as in, I'll use one, try a different one when it runs out unless I really love it until I find my "lotion soulmate"). I'm looking for mainly (a) a day moisturizer with sunscreen and (b) a good night cream.

I'm just curious to see which results others have had with different brands.

My criteria:

--has to be affordable
--doesn't smell disgusting (ideally, doesn't have a strong smell at all, as I like to wear other lotions/scents)
--ideally, not tested on animals
--has to be something that I can find easily/readily available, and not likely to be off the market soon
--has to be effective
--moisturizer must have sunscreen, at least SPF 30 (much higher than that isn't any more effective, to my understanding)
--feels nice on skin
--nothing too weird or out there

Organic cold pressed olive oil is a wonderful moisturizer. Add some zinc oxide to that and you have a sunscreen. If olive oil is too smelly, try jojoba oil. There are some great recipes out there for homemade moisturizers and sunscreens.

Apparently, Raspberry Seed Oil has a very high SPF.

I use petroleum jelly(Vaseline) at night, feels real good in the morning.

Ponds is an effective moisturizer.

Nivea goes hand in hand with dry skin and it's one of the best products available in the market.

I know this sounds stupid but how about Baby Johnson? They are made mild & pure keeping babies in mind.

Don't go for Aveeno if you've sensitive skin.

Victoria Secret products mostly have a strong stench/aroma/odour.

I personally believe that natural oils are any day better than an end number of over the counter moisturizers.

I've tried olive oil on my skin before, and coconut (I've heard that's supposed to be great), but neither really worked well and I think that they both made me break out.

I was curious about trying Nivea because I had a coupon for it, so I may try that. Do they make a night cream, too?

Right now, I have Olay for a night cream, and I love it, but I have heard (after buying it and opening it) that they might test on animals, though I'm not sure. So, I'd like to find a different one, if that is true. For a sunscreen moisturizer, I am currently using Lubriderm and I like how it feels on my skin, but I still want to try a few to be sure.

Over-the-counter is what I'd probably need. The only health food store around here is WAY out of the way, some of its stuff is really expensive, and it smells so bad in there--and this is coming from someone who's less sensitive to smell than others. It has to be something that I can buy easily and find easily.

You possibly suffer from skin sensitivity. I applied coconut oil once & developed burnt skin patches.

Daily Essential Regenerating Night cream is a part of the Nivea line of products. They have 3 more products that combine anti-aging properties with regeneration prop.

They(olay) do test their products on animals. Check with PETA for confirmation. Lubriderm, Dove, Avon, Aussie, L'oreal, Mary Kay are a few popular brands that fall in the 'Do Test' list.

Bath & Body works don't conduct tests on animals.

Hi Platero,

I know someone who has normal skin and she fares well with Kiehl's ultra moisturizer and Kiehl's spf 50 sunscreen which doubles as a make up primer too. What works for her might not work for someone else though. I haven't tried it yet but I might in the summer if the Shiseido Anessa milky sunscreen arrives and doesn't work out. The latter is supposed to be more moisturizing and not as drying or "matte".

Coconut oil contains lauric acid, I find it to be rather comedogenic but I know people who don't have this congestion problem. I actually prefer just using shea butter as I have very dry and dehydrated skin that doesn't hold moisture very well.

Get a shower filter. You'd be amazed the difference it does for one's skin.

"burnt skin patchs" form coconut oil????

Holy !!! whoa!

I've never heard of that happening before. Maybe you are allergic.

I use it everyday and love it. Better than anything else i've ever used. Keeps skin hydrated and blemish free. I swear it's a natural sunscreen too....

Bag Balm. You can buy the green square tin container at any Walgreen's for under ten bucks and it will moisturize the #@!$ out of your hands. I use it ALL OVER! It blows Vaseline away in every way!

pure african shea butter...here's the trick I use. I put it on before I get into the shower. It is extra thick and will make you feel slick. I wash up as usual and I am still moisturized. Plus it has a natural SPF and cheap. No smell at all

Keri lotion, available at drugstores. I use it all over. I leave my face and neck wet and rub the lotion in with the water. Use the extra on your hands to moisturize hands, elbows, knees, and feet.
Has no sunscreen in it, though.
Have used Keri for years and am staying young! =)

Yeah, some people don't like some of the ingredients in lotions. But, #humblebrag haha, I've been doing this long enough to see the plump, baby's-bottom skin results! =) People compliment my skin a lot and ask what I do...always happy to share!
As an actress, I can play a MUCH wider range of "ages" than I would otherwise, so it totally works for me career-wise, too!
Just a touch of maintenance really goes far. The body is very "plastic" to our thoughts and actions.
Plus, it's pretty cheap...I'd MUCH rather buy some more diamonds, in gold! haha And gold has skyrocketed.

One more tip--
I DON'T use sunscreen EVERY day! Skin starts looking weird and pasty if you do.
Sun, in moderation, is totally necessary for health and beauty. We need the natural vit.D, and Light.

Right now I'm finishing off what I have first for moisturizers. I don't have a ton of money, so I don't want to be wasteful. I'll take into consideration what's been posted here when I make my next purchase.

I bought this body lotion and shampoo that I'm using that's supposed to be paraben and phthalate-free, and also sulfate-free. At first, I was like, "ewww this smells naturey" but now I find the smell really pleasant.

It's expensive, though (well, compared to what I used to buy).

I'm still keeping my sunscreen. I don't want wrinkles. I do take a multi-vitamin.

My big issue, though: is this all a bunch of BS and hype? Is buying these products really worth the investment, especially when I'm not rich? Is it all just a scam? That's what I wonder about. Both sides obviously make arguments and present evidence and I don't know who to believe.

I'm very much anti-tanning/anti-sunbathing and I don't understand why people do it. It doesn't look good on people unless they are naturally that color to begin with, or close to it. Most people end up looking like Oompa Loompas (from the original movie, not the new one). The spray stuff isn't any better. Plus, what's wrong with having a lighter skin tone? I don't feel people should have be ashamed of it. Tanning and being out in the sun too much age you and give you leathery skin and wrinkles prematurely. I've seen that happen so many times. On top of that, there's the whole melanoma thing. Yuck. No thanks.

Plus, honestly, I don't really like being outside a lot. I'm an indoorsy sort of person. I tend to get tense, too, if I'm outside and alone--I start feeling scared and worried that someone will come along and hurt me. If I'm outside anywhere, it's in a busy enough place with at least a few people around, during the day, never at night.

I often think it's all a scam. I don't use anything on my face besides water and some oil if the skin gets too dry. I hate antiperspirants, body lotions, pretty much anything that could be absorbed by your skin. If you can't eat it, it's not good for your skin either. I use castile soap and coconut oil on my skin. Thinking of getting some shea butter too. My hair is more difficult as the castile soap dries it out too fast and requires more frequent washing. I dye my hair with henna and the henna nourishes the hair and balances its pH so I only have to wash it once a week but I don't do henna that often.

Other than temporary spray dye on like Halloween/a weekend, I've never dyed my hair. I've never used anything that couldn't be washed out, and haven't even used that stuff for probably 10 years now.

I wash my hair every other day because that's what my stylist recommended. Too much overwashing isn't good for it--that's what she told me. My shampoo/conditioner are paraben-free, sulfate-free, phthalate-free. I've used them for a few weeks and I like the smell and softness.

Deodorant, absolutely never will I go without it. I like body lotions for when my skin is dry and then anti-aging stuff too.

Shea butter, I like. Haven't used it in awhile, but I like it.

All I can say is--my tips totally work for me!
The last film I acted in, I was hired for one thing and they took one look at me when I got to set and pulled me in with the "20 year olds." =)
And good thing too, because of this, I made it through the final cut.
So...Keri and light sun exposure it is (for me)!
(I also use a non-soap facial scrub, gently, once a day on face, neck, decolletage, hands, feet, knees, and elbows. I think exfoliating gently is very important, dead skin cells build up otherwise.)
But...whatever works!

If you don't mind a very invasive question--and you don't have to answer if it makes you uncomfortable--but, since you mention not using deodorant: how do you prevent, you know, B.O.? Can you use your oils there? I would think that oils would stain clothing, but is that not the case? What do you use if you don't use deodorant? (Again, if you are uncomfortable, you don't have to answer; I'm just honestly curious as I've never heard any alternative to that).
