Hello, miss lady!I have a question that you may be able to help me with. It's been about 13 months since my surgery. Although my heart seems to be doing well, and my overall health is much improved, I am having issues with the bone and surgical site. There are raised bony spots along my sternum that hurt. My lungs seem to be very weak at times, like, I can't get enough air, although other times they are just fine. I haven't seen the doctor since last year, as my cardiologist would not return my calls (not sure why?) so I've just soldiered on and lived my life. Is this normal? Is it just that the bone healed incorrectly? I imagine there is no way to fix this. It's hard when something hits me there, it's nearly debilitating pain. I suppose this is just something I will have to live with? I just don't know and I'm sure you've see it all before. Thank you for any answers you may have. It's been a very long year... IP: Logged |

Lady, I have never heard of that! And no this is absolutely not normal. Since it hurts, I worry about osteomyelitis, basically an infection of the bone. Your difficulty in breathing is likely due to your pain and inablility to breath naturally (which is almost always subconcious) Hmmmm... Perhaps bone spurs? You know, I dont want to scare you, but I have seen open heart surgery and I am always in awe as how they can crack the sternum and put it back together...it is done basically with sewing the "wires" from one side of the sternum to the other and alot of braun to "cinch" the sternum backtogether. THAT is amazing in itself. Any other symptoms? And NO it is not something you should have to live with. INSIST your doc, any doc call you back. I would expect from a responsible clinician atleast a series of xrays and alot of blood work. If anything dont let it go on... I am so sorry you have had this complication.. When I get back to work I will probe the minds of a few folks, tho at my new job the doctors are quite disappointing and they would be frigentend by such... blessins! terri~ IP: Logged |

BTW if nobody will address your symptoms it is just, plain medical malpractice. And I would suggest getting youself in the most optimal health, ever, not saying you are not..but do what you can do on your side, cause I, unfortuantely, have little faith in traditional medicine anymore.. And what we can do to help ourselves is so, so important~ terri~ IP: Logged |

Thank you so much for your response. I hate to think that because of my not-so-great insurance, a doctor is reluctant to deal with me any more. Frustrating for sure. I am not a very doctor friendly person at all. In fact, I only saw the cardiologist twice, and the surgeon once initially and then for surgery and once after. I dealt with the nurses in his office a lot, and they were great. But, I still have no PCP and haven't followed up with anyone thinking I was fine. I haven't taken a very pro-active approach where doctors are concerned, just with my own diet and activity. I don't smoke or drink heavily or take medication. I will take your advice though. I think I will contact the surgeon's office since they actually seemed to give a hoot. IP: Logged |

Unfortunately Amercan healthcare has become about the dollar... frown...BIG frown... (wanting so desperatly to get out of the mainstream and work for some kindly country doc and take of snake bites or combine accidents or be a liason for a mind-body clinic...sigh....)
It is, obviously not legal to discriminate because of funding, but I have known pleanty of a doc who refused to consult on a patient due to lack of funding or quality of funding. The law states, however, once a doc has "accepted" a case by means of even a consultation, he/she is legally bound. And being leagally bound he/she must preform optimally for you. The hippocratic oath, I am quite disgusted with. I posted on my FB not too long ago, that people should know somebody in healthcare...sad, but true. Not to say there are not good clinicians out there, there ARE, but they are struggling too,, with America's ever putting quality healtcare on the back burner...I dunno. Back to YOU! IF you start to feeling totally horrible and you cant get any response from you docs...you can always go into an ER and state "chest pain." An ER cant refuse somebody who states this. Keep your documentation. I hate to advise law suits, but IF it is warranted..so be it. PLEASE keep me posted! terri~ IP: Logged |

A very knowledgable nurse getting her masters told me, it is probably the wires, where and the sternum trying to heal over the wires.Eventually the bony prominances will calcify and heal over IF it is the wires, but it would still be good to contact somebody! terri~ IP: Logged |

Thanks, TerriI tried looking you up on FB, but I didn't have any luck. You must have good privacy settings! I think I may have to resort to the ER very soon. I am having such a hard time sleeping, and so much pain breathing (my ribs HURT) that it's becoming difficult. I hate it. IP: Logged |
