Might you have any tips? I become one/vegan on & off and my body usually feels fantastic while i am.. I just get concerned when i feel tired or that i may not be getting all my nutrients so this time around i'm trying it while also taking b12 supplements, multivatims, etc..

I wanna make this a permanent way of eating.

While I've never been a vegetarian I used to go to veggie potlucks where most were vegetarian but a few were vegans. Almost all vegetarians used cheese to make their dishes taste better and be more filling which meant the vegans couldn't have it. So I made a point of making vegan dishes. As an example I'd make slightly altered Mexican dishes like a refried bean (lots of protein) dish with plenty of spices, mild peppers (including onion), salsa, tomatoes, a bit of olive oil, etc, and it was not only popular among the vegans but even many of the vegetarians went for seconds. Other dishes I recall making include baked falafel (with a lot of spices, among other things), aloo palak, and pad Thai (with extra peanuts & peanut sauce and a touch extra of red & green curry, holding the meat, eggs, fish sauce, and I also brought a bottle of Sriracha sauce with a sticky note on it warning that it was hot, but very delicious for those who can stand it).

I just share this because so many vegans brought very bland dishes (despite that I know vegan cookbooks exist) so I was pointing out that vegan food CAN be good. My vegan dishes were not only popular with the vegans but even the vegetarians who normally skipped the vegan dishes.

Also be aware that if you ever develop a heart condition then avoid avocados (something I used a lot of to spice up my Mexican dishes for vegans since I couldn't use cheese or meat), and I think they're supposed to be fattening, too.

And for vegetarians who do include cheese in their diet but care about ethical issues of not harming animals then you should know many cheeses contain rennet (generally speaking, if you want to avoid this then you need to look for cheeses that claim to be free of this at food co-ops and health food stores that cater to vegetarians).

I believe eggs are supposed to have many good things in them as well (which many vegetarians will eat) and have as much protein in them as meat (technically an egg is a developing embryo after all).

Great post! ^ thanks so much!

Yes, the protein that makes one feel full is what i had trouble with at first because i didn't want to eat meat --and beans, well, they have their reputation.

What really concerned me at first was because i wasn't taking any vitamis and i thought that fruit and veggies alone would be healthy.. even nuts; b12 one can only get from meat so i incorporated the vitamins now into my diet.

Overall, i look better, i feel better and my body responds a lot better... It's hard to explain unless you're talking to someone who has already detoxed their system and eats clean. My skin looks great, i can eat vegetables however often i'd like and it's natural.

I haven't tried out any recipies like those potatoes; usually steamed, for me.. But that is awesome.

This is something i'm doing on my own so finding someone with books or resources or things like that can be a bit tricky.. How thankful am i for the internet?

Thanks pixie!!

C1ND3R, I've been a vegetarian for about 20 years, I enjoy perfect health, and I'm told I look younger than I am. PixieJane, has great ideas for you. I hav'nt thought about being Vegan, as I do like eggs & cheese.

I don't eat meat or poultry, among other things. I do eat fish on occasion, as well as dairy and eggs (mainly the whites). I take a vitamin, though I admit that I often forget to take it, but I'm trying to be more consistent.

As for cooking, I make what I make. If you don't like it, don't eat with me. I never ask people to make special things for me, and don't expect that from people. I do enjoy cooking, and do a decent job at it, and I just hate it when people get nitpicky and demanding, especially when I know that my food tastes good and it's insulting.

This is interesting.. Ever since i started this vegetarian thing, i'm getting canker sores regardless of my taking supplements.

I'm reading that it may be an immune deficiency thing... Not so fun sounding.

You are just detoxing from years of poisoning yourself. It will fade once the toxins are out.

I tend to agree this sounds like detox. But it is important that you listen to your body and seek medical help if you feel it is necessary. Thrush and canker sores can be indicative of liver detox. I have found that eating food high in l-lysine is good at resolving stuff like that. Also depending on your diet, you could be getting a lot more nutrients than you are aware. Make sure you are not overloading your body with nutrients from food and then chasing it down with a 5,000mg pill.

I would like to know exactly what you are eating, because there are just as many ways to be unhealthy as a vegetarian/vegan as there are on an omnivorous diet. It is possible to get all your vitamin, mineral, and nutrient needs (including protein) from a 100% plant based diet (though a B12 supplement is something to look into if you have to wash your plants before you eat them).

The problem tends to be caloric intake (resulting in feeling tired or having strong cravings for slower burning nutrients like protein and fat). A lot of times we don't realize that if you are going to eat plants, you need to eat more of them to meet your body's caloric needs (or replace them with fats/proteins, which can lead to poor health in excess).

Your stomach pains could be the result of allergies, not preparing your food correctly (beans for example need to be soaked before cooking, otherwise they can hurt your stomach), or combining certain foods (eating a lot of dairy and bread and then eating a salad can bog your system down with slower digested material and leave the plant matter to rot in you stomach).

There are many little tricks and I urge you not to get discouraged while your body acclimates to finding its right balance and expels all the junk it has been fed throughout its life.
