Topic: Do you suppose adding essential oils to a salve might cause stinging?

I'm making some homemade salves to give as gifts, and I added some cedarwood oil to a batch to give it a "manly" smell for my dad and brothers, haha.However, I tried a bit of the salve, and I noticed that it did not feel nearly as soothing on a scratch as just the plain herb infused oils that I use for myself. What do you guys think?
I'm thinking I'll heat it back up and add some more oils to it to try to dilute the cedarwood EO.  IP: Logged |

Essential oils are very concentrated, a little goes a long way. If you heat it up, it should disperse. Cedarwood is a preservative, so is a good one to help salves keep. Did you just make it with the three two one infused oil, soft butter, beeswax formula; or is it a distilled water mix?IP: Logged |

The first one. No distilled water. But I think that it might have added a tiny bit of a sting (I tried some of the salve on a scratch I have, just to try it out, and it didn't feel as soothing as just the plain oils without EO).
I also got it a bit too hard, so I'm going to add some additional infused oil to it tonight and hope that it further dilutes the cedarwood EO.

Did you add the essential oil last? I think you add the drops into the little jars, cap tightly and then shake. So it is mixed well.IP: Logged |

Hi violets, when we first add essential oils to anything, it seems as if there is no scent...but after it had a chance to 'cure??' like within a week, the scent becomes quiet pungent if it was in a closed jar...so only 3-5 drops are sometimes enough, specially something like cedarwood oil which is quite strong.if you can, could u make more of the salve mixture alone...without any EO's and then add that to the mix you have already got? Erm...I forgot that I had posted this question, and went ahead and just added some additional plain, infused oils and beeswax to sort of "compensate" for the EO. And then I added a tiny bit of sweet orange EO to the pot before I put them in jars. We'll see, haha.I've noticed that when I make candles, the effect is the opposite with the EO. It smells nice and strong initially, but when I burn them I can only smell a faint touch of the EO, and mostly beeswax. I suppose I may have to sample a bit of the salve I made before I give it to anyone, to make sure that it doesn't smell weird or burn. I tried some last night, and it still wasn't quite as soothing as just the plain oils. Thank you so much for your input, ladies. I'm having fun experimenting, but I wish I had prepared a bit better for my gifts! I suppose if it's a gigantic fail there's always room to experiment before Christmas, haha.  IP: Logged |

Hi Violets, EO's are notorious for evaporating very fast from candles, that is why it is better to use fragrance oils even it means nice scent without benefits....though fragranc-ing the house nicely is a benefit this is a good hobby, so good for you  IP: Logged |

Thanks! I wonder if it would make a difference to use a lot more EOs in my candles, and to find an EO to use in the salves that won't cause stinging...? That might make it a bit less cost effective, though.
Maybe if I used coconut oil or almond oil in addition to the other oils... But a lot of the people I give the salves to are guys, and I'm not sure that they want to smell like coconuts and almonds, haha. So far, the salve has turned out nicely. But yeah, good beeswax isn't exactly cheap. IP: Logged |

LOL don't do that, you'll just end up wasting a lot of good EO. Some people use different wax mixes, and certain wicks, but even then EO's won't last. They'll still evaporate within seconds.... i think there is something called Fractioned coconut oil...always stays in liquid form, and has no scent. can't you just make a mix of a few EO's to get a scent you like, put them in a nice bottle, and tell people to use it in a diffuser?

Candles and salves turned out nicely, the candles I made retained at least a very light scent of the EOs all the way through, and the salve had hardly any scent, which is good for now. But yeah, I don't use a diffuser. I use a few drops of EO in some simmering water on the stove, lol. Tah-dah!
