I've grown out a lot of my hair without using dye over the past six months or so, and I want to dye it with a henna/indigo combination.I've taken quite a few bentonite clay baths to detoxify my hair, and I've just been washing it with a vinegar rinse lately. Most of the dye seems to be gone, but some of the longer areas probably still have some left in there. Do any of you have experience using a combination of henna and indigo on color treated hair, or on white hair? I have salt and pepper hair, with a white streak at the temple...so I'm not really trying to go orange or blue, haha. (That phase of my life passed a while back. ) Any info on how to do it, how long it takes, how many applications, etc. would be incredibly helpful! IP: Logged |

Hey there. I used to do henna and indigo all the time. What i'd do was just mix the powdered henna or indigo that id get at my local middle east grocer with a bunch of conditioner, then id put on a shower cap, then a small towel over my head, towels on my pillows and then keep it on overnight. I found that doing it overnight definitely gets a lot more dye into your hair but I'm not sure if conditioner is what you'd want to use.The henna for hair website has a lot of information and recipes for mixes you can use if you don't want to get orange hair since the white hairs will probably end up a very bright orange/red . Here is a good recipe that involves an indigo-henna mix with the result being a nice medium brown and there are more on that website http://www.hennaforhair.com/mixes/katharineg/ More info for grey hair http://www.hennaforhair.com/gray/index.html good luck

It's been so long, I tried Henna once. It's really messy, but it's very good for your hair. You may turn hair green if there is Chlorine in your water. Other than that, I can't remember. My hair wasn't coloured though it was natural salt and pepper. Really can't say. Indigo, I seem to remember, has to be used with Uric Acid to be effective, this I remember from Natural Dyes for Wool. It got to be pretty toxic to dye naturally, as I recall. Showers again, I suppose IP: Logged |

Hahaha.Maybe I should just stick with this... http://www.amazon.com/BROWN-Henna-Color-Grams-Process/dp/B00ARKH0UQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1401140038&sr=8-3&keywords=indigo+powder+organic I wonder how they get "dark brown henna"? I thought that pure henna was always red...? IP: Logged |

That's true. I wonder if they used Indigo, or if Henna really comes in different shades? I read somewhere (if it's on the internet it must be true, right? ) that if it's not red, it's not pure henna. But I really have no idea what that means. I assumed they meant that there were chemicals or something in it, but I'm beginning to suspect that Henna is very much like anything else in nature. Different types probably carry different color ranges, just like Amethyst or Rose Quartz, etc. Meh. I ordered the stuff from Amazon. It had good reviews, and they claim to be organic/natural. Hopefully my hair won't turn green or orange... IP: Logged |

So...I've been gradually trying to detox my hair by washing it with vinegar, and taking bentonite clay baths. I've mixed my henna, and I'll be doing the first step today. I'll let you guys know if my hair turns out looking like a mango. IP: Logged |

Okay, it worked! I bought a henna/indigo combo, and it definitely covered my salt and pepper hair pretty well. Unfortunately, I think I may have left it on for too long, because it dyed my hair black (which is not a flattering color on me, unfortunately...reddish or dark brown are about all I can do). So I think I will continue with my vinegar rinse to wash my hair, and see if it will help fade the black out a bit. Anyway...that's how it turned out, in case anyone was wondering.
