This is an amazing book!

Full title:

Healing with Whole Foods: Asian Traditions and Modern Nutrition by Paul Pitchford.

It essentially encases a lifetimes dedication of work and study to healing through nutrition, over 600 pages and covers essentially any topic you can think of regarding whole foods and nutrition and healing(including some herbs)! Highly recommend this book. It also takes into account the Traditional Chinese Medicine theory of "hot" and "cold" personalities, and how these affect the person and types of foods they should eat for healing and to correct imbalances.

For example, I lean towards a "cold" personality, and I have learned through this book, that people who are "cold" should NOT go on a raw vegan diet!!! Especially if the "cold" personality person lives in a colder climate. I had been wanting to become raw vegan but the more I try to incorporate this lifestyle the worse I was feeling and even getting worse in some symptoms (my chronic fatigue was getting worse - I have discovered I am anemic with low thyroid functions as well- my skin was breaking out worse than it ever has in my life, I've GAINED weight, I was feeling bloated all the time but still very hungry all the time, as well my period essentially stopped for a few months for the first time in my life. Considering I had been, in my eyes, eating healthier than I ever had in my life I could not comprehend why so many things were seemingly getting worse (there is, of course, the detox theory as well, where one is detoxing a lifetime of toxins when changing to the raw vegan lifestyle, but this seemed to surpass that). The RAW vegan lifestyle is one of the worst things a "cold" personality person can do for themselves if trying to Heal and correct imbalances. I have a friend who is also "cold" personality and who tried to go raw vegan many years ago and made himself very sick by doing this. The "cold" personality, is correlated with an imbalance of yin, too much yin. The "cold" personality person needs to eat 70-90% of their diet as cooked (which can include steamed), and certain foods at that. So obviously, one cannot just eat a bunch of fast food or highly refined foods that are cooked and expect that to heal them, this is a vast and complex topic, but the book even offers some recipes to help!

The book also touches on how in Chinese medicine it is believed that sometimes one needs to eat the meat of certain animals to achieve healing/balance. Which sucks for me because I am vegetarian and do not want to renege on this. However it does vouch for a vegetarian diet/mostly plant based diet, HOWEVER in the cases of some more debilitated conditions it does recommend eating certain types/amounts of meats to achieve health/balance because in Traditional Chinese Medicine it is believed that when one eats the meat of a certain animal, one is actually ingesting the TRAITS that that animal possesses and in ingesting the meat/traits one builds those traits into oneself. They also recommend eating certain parts of certain animals to achieve this including eating organ meats. It is also recommended obviously, that if one does need to eat the meat of an animal that the animal should be raised happily and organically and killed with respect and gratitude. It does NOT recommend eating large amount of meat, nor does it necessarily recommend needing to eat the meat forever, but on occasion to cure imbalances. Now I am not vouching for this because I am vegetarian and do not like to think of eating meat or depending on animals/meat for sustenance, however in my mind I can also understand this theory and even see the sense in it, even if my heart is against it. I do believe a largely plant based diet is the way to heal the planet and through this as time goes on the less meats we depend on that eventually our minds/belief systems would evolve to a point of not needing meat ever. It's a confusing topic. I used to listen to the channeling's of the entity Bashar and a woman who experienced organ failure due to years of raw/vegan diet and having to eat some meat to get better and explaining how even though she is against eating meat, could feel that her body was getting better when eating some, asked him why this could be, he responded that its because when we hold even an UNCONSCIOUS belief system that meat is necessary it makes it so and it can take some time to break these unconscious belief systems as they are so ingrained throughout incarnations and lifetimes and when those who we are close to and surround us hold these beliefs that we need meat or etc, it can actually impact us unconsciously and cause it to be so (for example if your family strongly believes you need meat and you spend time with them they are sending that message to you subconsciously/unconsciously and the body responds to that). I personally believe WEANING is the way to go for most even if it takes years to wean from meat/animal products. Sort of like Linda's 15 year plan to become fruitarian. In some people's cases maybe it take more than 15 years, maybe it takes a lifetime or more than one lifetime.

Anyway the book is a great read and a wealth of knowledge for those looking for healing through natural, whole foods and holistic lifestyles.

The book sounds interesting and believable. How do we know if we have a Cold or Hot personality?
I've been a vegetarian for more than 20 years, and won't start eating meat now.

The book describes the hot and cold personality traits, it could also probably be looked up online. Foods are also considered hot/cold or neutral. And I agree with your not eating meat now. It is mostly talking about the eating meat in more severe/debilitated cases. If you are strong, healthy and happy there would be no need to eat these for healing (according to the book).

This is so interesting because I studied acupuncture and realized I have a cold stomach. Just today, I ate a lot of hot pepper sauce and feel so much better.
