well what do you know?! just found out that my fav childhood comics, Archie's, have had an openly and admitedly gay character who will "tie the knot" in the next edition
http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=34706

i wonder if this is just a publicity stunt from the writers, but either way WOW!

I did! Me liked Jughead and Veronika. No objection to a gay character here.

I read some on long car trips. I remember liking Cherl Blossom, and routing for her. lol

But that's cool about the new character...

A few weeks a go my mom(who's a bit of a homo phobe) said "it seems like every show has a have a gay person now, cause that's whats selling"

REALLY!? really mom! did you really just say that.
I told her that is as bad as saying 'seems like every show has to have a black now.'

I had to school her, there are more gay people on tv...because there are less idiots in the world who cause a riot over someone being gay, and accuse them being possessed by the devil/demon, a witch, satan, the anti christ, or a heathen.

i dont think i would've been very thrilled with the new character as a kid mostly since i first learned about sexual orientations at mid teens :P now that i think about it Archies was too sexual for kids anyways! its all about archie digging this girl or that, kissing, dating.. thats all fine but kids who read this must have other interests dont they?

They used to have a cartoon also...and they shared it along with Josie and the Pussycats.

i remember what a rush getting a new Archie's comic would give me... i'd read it all in one stay..

i still find it hard to believe they have an openly gay character, and not subtly hinting on homosexuality as some shows do..

A girl in the latchkey I work at reads Archie. And she likes to point out pictures to me like Veronica and Archie making out. LOL And the Archie comic she has shows someone peeing in the pool. OH MY! And I'm like okay stop showing me that picture already. hahahaha

She is in 2nd or 3rd grade. But it's good to see kids enjoying to read. Whether it's a comic, how you say...manga, and those pokemon yugio books, and other.

But as she was showing me the comic book, I was keeping an eye out for the new character. Haven't spotted him yet.

^hmmm i think he's in a special digest that is under his name -Kevin i think

thats probably because the guys behind Archie wanted to keep a line between their comic and the new charcter -just in case- people object their children reading it (it wont effect the old chaarctrs).. you can say they are still test driving..

you know i dont think Archie is suitable for toddlers, eventhough i read it when i was around 7 or 8 years old i think the content is too mature, not because of the new character but because the whole comic revolves around dating, and making out and double playing (c'mon Arch make up your mind blondie or the rich diva?!)

kids should be more concerned with unicorns, and play dough..

I only barely recall reading Archie comics that relatives got for me and I was really bored with the dating angle (I don't think I could've been older than 10) as well as guys being competitive somehow (be it women, food, or sports). The only part I remember getting interested in (and read more than once, and without skimming it as I usually did) was when a young Sabrina (not even a teen) conjured cookies with magic which created some sort of odd trouble. THAT was more age appropriate.

Though I watched the Simpsons before I was even a teen and I remember getting some of the "gay references" as I did with the Critic. But The Simpsons were actually funny to me back then, unlike Archie, and things like dysfunctional homes and schools were things I could relate to, unlike Archie's perfect world of dating and food.

But a couple of years ago I was made to watch It's a Wonderful Life (and I got a strong buzz from brandy & eggnog), and seeing a wish turn out so wrong like that when a guy wasn't born reminded me of the Buffy ep: The Wish and since I'd been made to sit through her movie I decided to make her sit through an ep. Being buzzed (at the very least), I decided to ask the kids (boy 7 and girl 12 then) if they wanted to watch it with us, but warned them that it was a little scary. Both kids did and really liked it so I played Doppelgangland where Vampire Willow comes to this world and does things like lick other girls and comes to this dialog:

quote:
the gang looks at the vampire version of Willow from an alternate reality

Giles: It's extraordinary.
Willow: It's horrible. That's me as a vampire? I'm so evil, and skanky... and I think I'm kinda gay.
Buffy: Willow, just remember, a vampire's personality has nothing to do with the person it was.
Angel: Well, actually...

pauses as Willow and Buffy look at him

Angel: That's a good point.

Neither kid seemed phased by this (nor confused). And they loved it. Of course, that was a trivial detail of the episode, not a central theme.

I would definitely read a unicorn comic! I remember in 1st grade, being slightly crushed when my first grade teacher wouldn't let me do my animal report on unicorns. So I picked fuzzy baby chicks instead.

Is it because the teacher didn't consider the unicorn to be a real animal?

Unicorns are GREAT.

I think pegasuses (pegasi?) are a bit more cool because they can fly, but unicorns are still awesome.

also, @ PixieJane, just started watching "Buffy" (have already seen "Angel" and know the spoilers for "Buffy") :-)

Any bronies or pegasisters here?

For those who don't know what a brony is, here it's explained in detail (a pegasister is just as into MLP:FIM, a show that includes unicorns and pegusi, as a brony, but is female):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a27oq09lhPw

I've only seen a few eps and can't be called a pegasister yet...but I see the potential for me to become one.

But if anyone here happens to be familiar with both MLP and Transformers let me know as I'll share the hilarious death match between Starscream and Rainbow Dash.
