October 3, 2011 A while back, at the entrance of a gym, there was a picture of a very thin and beautiful woman. The caption was "This summer, do you want to be a mermaid or a whale?" The story goes, a woman (of clothing size unknown) answered the following way: "Dear people, whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, seals, curious humans), they are sexually active and raise their children with great tenderness. They entertain like crazy with dolphins and eat lots of prawns. They swim all day and travel to fantastic places like Patagonia, the Barents Sea or the coral reefs of Polynesia. They sing incredibly well and sometimes even are on cds. They are impressive and dearly loved animals, which everyone defend and admires. Mermaids do not exist. But if they existed, they would line up to see a psychologist because of a problem of split personality: woman or fish? They would have no sex life and could not bear children. Yes, they would be lovely, but lonely and sad. And, who wants a girl that smells like fish by his side? Without a doubt, I'd rather be a whale. At a time when the media tells us that only thin is beautiful, I prefer to eat ice cream with my kids, to have dinner with my husband, to eat and drink and have fun with my friends. We women, we gain weight because we accumulate so much wisdom and knowledge that there isn't enough space in our heads, and it spreads all over our bodies. We are not fat, we are greatly cultivated. Every time I see my curves in the mirror, I tell myself: "How amazing am I ?! " (The girl on the picture is French model Tara Lynn) Feel free to tag yourselves Last comment: I'm not putting down thin people, being a thin woman myself (BMI of 22 maybe?) just saying that being large doesn't equate to being unattractive. Sorry totally do not get your post. Which dude? Nimoy? And what has a girl's ears to do with this thread? And why are her ears a joke? Reference to Spock ears? But why monkey? IP: Logged |

Ah OK.....you compared Vulcan ears to monkey ears and your friend is related to Nimoy/Spock. And no, I was not familiar with the term. LOL! Wouldn't that be more Feringi ears?

http://plus-model-mag.com/2012/01/plus-size-bodies-what-is-wrong-with-them-anyway/ Plus Size Bodies, What Is Wrong With Them Anyway? In the January 2012 issue of PLUS Model Magazine, plus-size model Katya Zharkova is featured in an explosive editorial where thought provoking statistics and statements are revealed. - Twenty years ago the average fashion model weighed 8% less than the average woman. Today, she weighs 23% less. - Ten years ago plus-size models averaged between size 12 and 18. Today the need for size diversity within the plus-size modeling industry continues to be questioned. The majority of plus-size models on agency boards are between a size 6 and 14, while the customers continue to express their dissatisfaction. - Most runway models meet the Body Mass Index physical criteria for Anorexia. - 50% of women wear a size 14 or larger, but most standard clothing outlets cater to sizes 14 or smaller. If we continue to ignore and rely on others to decide what we want to see, change will never happen. We have to be vocal and proactive, patient and realistic. Tips on how we can help create change: - Support the companies who market to you. - Use social networking sites and email to let brands and designers know how you feel about clothing, options and the use of straight sized models (thin models) to market to you. - Your dollars count! If you stop buying at “Store A” and let them know you will not be purchasing clothing until they market to you, this will raise concern. - Use every avenue and opportunity you have available to you for your voice to be heard. - Indie designers need our support. The answer to the question is this, there is nothing wrong with our bodies. We are bombarded with weight-loss ads every single day, multiple times a day because it’s a multi-billion dollar industry that preys on the fear of being fat. Not everyone is meant to be skinny, our bodies are beautiful and we are not talking about health here because not every skinny person is healthy. What we desire is equality to shop and have fashion options just like smaller women. Small women cannot be marketed to with pictures of plus-size women, why are we expected to respond to pictures of small size 6 and 8 women? We don’t!When the plus size modeling industry began, the models ranged in size from 14 to 18/20, and as customers we long for those days when we identify with the models and feel happy about shopping. Are we moving towards that goal? Are you being marketed effectively by the brands who want your dollars? IP: Logged |

Thank you! I am going to join it! BTW.... I used to look a bit body wise like this at 190 pounds/200 pounds. (sorry no pictures of me then, ex# kept them/destroyed them?) I could squat 600 pounds, curl with one forearm 120 pounds, and 88 pounds with a wrist. I also did hanging by my knees upside down "sit ups" with a 90 pound weight clutched to my chest for more resistance. I was not fat in my opinion even though heavy and short. Bigger legs than girl in picture, and much shorter, but with legs at 26 inches only, very tree trunk strong and could leg press 500 pounds repeatedly, and lift with them the 600 pound shoulder squats. Sigh..... will never be like that again, but am trying to get at least back to those body weights. IP: Logged |

" Twenty years ago the average fashion model weighed 8% less than the average woman. Today, she weighs 23% less."I've no doubt that is true but I venture to say it's because the average woman's weight has gone up and not because the average model's weight has gone down at all in the past 20 or 40 years. 20 years ago Kate Moss was very 'en vogue' and she's a waif.

RegardesPlatero I totally agree with you. Voluptuous was in vogue. Artists have long painted images depicting lush bodied women and men. And in my point of view the new model looks sickly, weak, and unhappy. Also she looks kinda like a malnourished boy not a woman. As to the 20 year ago thing....they should have maybe said in the 1950s, because by the 60s there was Twiggy, the beginning of the anorexia is cool fad. I starved myself from 200 pounds to 94 pounds and even cut my hair and dressed like Twiggy. My waist reached a low of 17 inches at one time. Maintained the look a few years by barfing and starving. By the way, I feel the other picture of MM is tastefully shot so no problem. Posted a discretely posed near nude top of this page also. IP: Logged |

These things come and go in waves I think (hope) the "curvy is sexy" will be back any day now. The Kardashians brough it back briefly but they are so plastic that people have a hard time taking it seriously. I think that when it truly catches on that we can be fit and curvy at the same time things willk change. But, for now, we have to deal with I remember when Mode Magazine was still around... ...and the plus size model craze was in full swing. It happened at just the right time too, when I was in my early 20s, seeing the models made me feel better about my body and about dating. This was actually my favorite picture from Mode: This is Angellika Morton. I actually have an original in a scrapbook - body inspiration! I even have the grey raincoat and I used to have a "flesh colored" slip dress but I don't know where that went, I must buy another... Here is more Angellika: She is my body twin here: This is more recent. She got a bit heavier but she is still beautiful: IP: Logged |

This is one of my favorite plus sized pics: Mia Tyler in regular sized Glamour Magazine... I am also a Natalie Laughlin fan. When I searched her the best pics came up: Yes, plus sized women can do sensual (the guy actually looks like my type too)... This is Natalie alone: I have been out of the loop for a while, I missed this lady, Maggie Brown. We actually have very, very similar bodies and hair! IP: Logged |
