I must exclaim that my first batch of salad sprouts turned out to be quite tasty. I used clover seeds. They were great in a whole wheat pita sandwich stuffed full with bean salad and lettuce and a creamy salad dressing.I also bought hemp seeds to sprout but don't know if they are used that way. Anyone made hemp sprouts? How about beans, what's your favorite sprout to grow ? IP: Logged |

I didn't realize how easy it is to sprout, and how great a quantity a few seeds will produce. IP: Logged |

You can freeze the bean sprouts but not the tiny seed sprouts like alfalfa and clover. You can grind them in the blender and use a dehydrator to make sprouted crackers. IP: Logged |

Back to the sprouts... Duh, the hemp failed. I guess they were irradiated. No sense eating them unless they come already ground. I'm going to try mung beans next. IP: Logged |

Mung beans require complete darkness. Don't think I want to eat dark. Found a site that explains how simple it is to sprout. Great tips here: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KtH7Im1rWjs This company is recommended for organic sprout seeds, but I question the validity wine they are fighting Monsanto because of possible cross contamination. That's common in Canada. Anyone else have a different supplier for seeds? IP: Logged |

You only need a glass jar and a piece of cheesecloth with a rubber band. 2 Tablespoons of small seeds, up to 1/4 cup for larger seeds. Fill jar 1/2 way with water and soak a few hours. Drain, rinse and drain again 2x daily for 24 hours up to 12 days depending on the seeds. Small salad seeds are 3 days. Put the jar sideways in a bowl on your countertop with indirect light, and they magically grow. Dry and refrigerate 2 weeks. Did you know that consuming 1 ounce of broccoli sprouts provides the same nutrient value as 2-1/2 pounds of full grown broccoli crowns? Sprouts are Amazing Superfoods. IP: Logged |

Another incredible sprout fact to added to my database of knowledge for all to learn: Heating (cooking) sprouts depletes them of 4 essential nutrients: vitamins C and B1, Protein, and Potassium. The other nutrients remain. Homogenization eliminates these also, especially in juices. I wonder if the vitamins get added in after heating. How can they publish the nutrition facts if they get depleted? Crazy deceptive world. Must look into this further. IP: Logged |

I obtained the nutrition info from an hour-long 2012 sprouting video by naturopathy doctors Rudy and Jeanie Davis, called Great Things Grow In Small Packages. Iin it they share the nutrition facts for each type of sprouted seeds. IP: Logged |

Yes, I'm rambling... Did you know that sunflower sprouts taste better than the seeds? Plus they dispel radioactivity and relieve constipation. Buckwheat sprouts are good for blood vessels and can help treat varicose veins. Fenugreek sprouts must be mixed with other seed sprouts because they have a terrible flavor when eaten alone. Sprouts can be grown in any climate at any time of the year and nutritional value is boost by as much as 400 to 500 percent after sprouting begins. IP: Logged |

So far, the broccoli sprouts are the best ones I've tasted and the easiest to sprout. Now I know how a hampster feels... chomp chomp chomp. I ate the broccoli sprouts plain, right out of the jar, clump by clump because they taste so good!!!If you are planning to sprout for the first time, don't be scared if, on the second or third day of sprouting broccoli, it looks like they are covered in mold. The fine root hairs look fuzzy white and the first impulse is to throw them out. Take a good sniff and you can tell they are fine because if they are moldy they would smell rotten. Rinse them off again and they will not look so fuzzy after that. IP: Logged |
