God bless all those individuals and businesses that donate their extras and leftover goods to the food bank, and God bless all the volunteers who assist. This type of charity can literally make a difference between life and death. I would love to see the recipients receive instruction on how to prepare the food. I entered a food bank recently helping out a friend and saw recipients pass by the old hard loaves of artisan breads and pick up the soft white sandwich bread instead. I would be so grateful to have those crusty on the outside loaves! Still fresh on the inside but dry, they can be used to make the absolute best tasting baked French toast, croutons, grilled cheese, homemade bread crumbs, stuffings, etc. I was amazed to see such a varied selection of items at the food bank, even toilet paper and toiletries, organic canned goods and piles of fresh produce. Even mega-sized bags of frozen blueberries! And stacks of bananas already perfectly ripened ready for making smoothies. What's your experience with Food Bank?

I haven't been inside one, There's a place to drop off donations, which I do with healthy foods I'd eat myself.IP: Logged |

The thing lacking most was the meats. They had a freezer section but the meat selection was limited. For someone who is switching to vegetarian this would be a great way to rid themselves of freezer meats they will never use. I guess you would have to check first if a freezer was there. The Food Bank I visited looked like a mini supermarket, complete with shopping carts. IP: Logged |

Yes, with shopping carts. You can fill it to the top with all the selections available but you can only go there once a month so you have to plan your recipes in your head as you walk through. You don't have to take everything that is available. IP: Logged |

Sad really, with dry, crusty bread, you can make the absolute best French Toast or Bread Pudding. The crumb is dry and whatever you put it in, the crumb absorbs and puffs up filled with all of that flavor. Simply take 2 or 3 beaten eggs, vanilla (extract is fine, don't be a food snob), nutmeg and soak over night and fry in butter. Scotch toast is pretty much the same save for dried oatmeal being used to add a nutty flavor to the fry bread. Make a simple brine for pickling of dodgy veggies by using salt + vinegar and letting it pickle over time. And virtually anything can be pickled. I've volunteered at Food Banks, what most folks want is canned food, meat or meatish products, and sugary cereals A bag of potatoes can be used to make a tonne of great great food always found it ironic the stuff in the dumpster behind the avg Grocery Store is more healthy then "fresh" food from the drive through window IP: Logged |

so you dumpster dive at the supermarket??? hmmmm...... It's true, though. I always ask for the stuff at the farmers market that gets thrown away... like the beet greens, so yummy, and the veggie scraps that make good compost. IP: Logged |

try baked french toast... double layer the bread in a casserole dish and pour the egg milk cinnamon vanilla mixture over top to soak, bake it and then drizzle with maple syrup as soon as it comes out of the oven IP: Logged |
