But there are a lot of 7th house overlays and DSC conjunction in synastry. There's a Mars Venus trine at about 5 degrees.

I'll acknowledge the double Jupiter 4th house overlays because it can express itself romantically, a comfortable romance.
Oh oh, a Venus and 8th house overlay!

So it's not totally doomed for platonic affection. Or at least I'm grabbing at anything that would convince me it's not (((

We did go on dates and find each other attractive. Granted I have had much more firey interactions with more attraction aspects but this is the first one with a lot of 7th overlays.

the planet is the trigger, with the house person initially being the receptive part, so for the first interactions, the first impression, the house will "receive" the planet, they will notice them first.
but the planet enters that specific room in the house person chart - the houses are actually more like rooms.

for example, if someone's sun falls in your 5th house, it brings light in that room of yours. this means it triggers feelings of infatuation, attraction, admiration, the desire for courtship, romance, play or it stimulates your artistic, expressive side. in return, the house person will behave like this in the presence of the planet person, unlike they do with other people: they will feel and be more expressive, direct (which is in fact the emblem of this house) than with other people, feel attracted and behave like they won't mind romancing you or being romanced. in return, the planet person will get to see this side of the house person, this room of their soul. (for this, of course, several interactions are necessary). this, in turn, will be very attractive to the planet person, if the synastry is mutual on the required levels. if the synastry is not mutual, the planet person may even dislike and be repulsed by a person (unattractive to them) trying to romance them and looking at them with gooey eyes.

the same happens with the other houses. if the 8th house overlay suggests sexual attraction (in combination with other factors), the 8th house would become attracted, sexy, show their need for intimacy, their private side, their seductive side to the planet person and the planet person reacts to that (and the dance begins) if there's mutuality in this respect. otherwise, the planet will be indifferent or even repulsed by the desire for intimacy the 8th house projects on them.

if the dance happens in the 7th house, the house person perceives the planet person as a potential ideal partner form them, in regards to that planet. it behaves in a "marital" manner towards the planet, which may be very attractive or not - at-all depending on the mutuality of 7th house activation.

I think I'm inclined to agree. The mutuality of house overlays is definitely weighted. Sure, a one sided 7th house activation can be felt on both sides, but unevenly.

I read that a Sun overlay into a 7th house without mutual activation tends to cause the Sun person to eventually pull back though being initially attracted at first.

In this specific case, the attraction was mutual and at the same time. And the intensity was matched and mutually prompted. But without going into specific details of the person involved factors seemed to have caused a sudden and confusing withdrawal.

Maybe the 7th house activation prompted things to go forward too fast without enough supportive aspects creating a fear of things going too quickly?
