I just wrote this article. Hope you like it! Zane asked me a great question. I wanted to say that there is no way to simplify a synastry chart but there is. When I do a professional synastry chart, it takes me three to five days. I look at every nook and cranny. At the end, the relationship will become 3D to me. Then, I write a summary which is a simplification of the chart but it does take me that much time to understand all the ins and outs of a relationship. However, if people do not want to do this, I will try to make it easier in this article.
The very first thing to study is the Moons. The Moon is the heart. The Moon is the soul. Best friends are Moon to Moon. Lovers are Moon to Moon. Little can make up for poor Moon connections. Some people do have poor Moon connections and long lasting relationships. In my personal opinion, they are missing a piece. However, relationships have many forms and some long lasting relationships do not have good Moon connections. However, I doubt that the relationships have true soul in the way that is heart to heart. One has hit the jackpot of soul if one has Moon trine Moon or Moon conjunct Moon. If one has Moon oppose Moon or Moon square Moon, one may well have a relationship but it would not have the true soul of which I speak here. Let me define true soul, Moon trine Moon is the kind of relationship in which you share a telepathy. You share the same sense of humor. Few words need to be spoken because you have your own language akin to children. It is a very easy, flowing relationship. The people know each in an intuitive, effortless kind of way. When you were a child and you met that certain other child who you KNEW would become your best friend, that is the best way I can describe Moon trine Moon. It is pure soul meeting pure soul. There are not many per lifetime. If it can be your partner, you have a true blessing. Moon conjunct Moon would be second to this. A very simple way to see if there will be little to no soul in the relationship is if one person’s Moon is UNASPECTED to the chart of the other person. In these cases, the people will not understand each other. We have all had relationships in which we try to make a joke and it falls flat. We may try to explain why our joke is funny and the other just looks bewildered. This is a relationship without Moon connections. In addition, one person will not be able to comfort the other person. We have all been in situations in which we spill our dark secrets to another person and the person looks as if he was hit with a club. There is simply not understanding. This is a chart without Moon connections. I do not think there can be a long term happy marriage without Moon connections. There can be a long term marriage but happy would be another story. I was going to do one article on how to simplify a synastry but I cannot. I can see how long it will take to simply talk about the Moons, so I will endeavor to do a series. Back to the Moons. We have discussed the best Moon aspects( Moon trine Moon and Moon conjunct Moon) and the worst synastry aspect( Unaspected Moon). Let’s look at some of the in between Moon connections. I referred to Moon square Moon and Moon oppose Moon. These would be better than an Unaspected Moon in synastry. However, there will be many emotional misunderstandings. Moon oppose Moon is easier than Moon square Moon. I believe any square is locked in. Many people do not agree but it is my belief that the square, itself, cannot be changed but one can work around it. Hence, with Moon square Moon in synastry, there would be locked and DIFFERENT emotional positions between the two people. One would like rap. The other would like opera. One would dress in black like a goth. One would be a preppie. They may love each other. There could even be a best friends aspect such as Moon conjunct Sun. However, true heart and soul of the variety I described above will not be there. Moon oppose Moon is easier than Moon square moon. The opposition is like a moody person. One day, he is nice. The other day, he is mean. In this case, the two people are opposites in their emotional landscapes. As friends, this is very nice. However, for that significant other, I do not like it, myself, because there is not an easy understanding. One must explain oneself in the manner of constructing a model airplane. At the end, the other may understand but it will not be without a great deal of effort. Let’s look at some other planets which may conjunct the Moon in synastry. I will use the conjunction for simplicity purposes. If I endeavor to list all the aspects, the article will be too long, so we will get a flavor of the other planets in synastry through studying the conjunction. I do not like Saturn conjunct the Moon in synastry. The Saturn person will, usually, be critical of the Moon person’s sensitive heart. This aspect may feel comforting in the dating stages. However, after many years of marriage, the Moon person may want to run away from home. The Saturn person may want to kick the Moon person out of the home for insubordination. It is said that there need to be Saturn contacts for staying power in a relationship but I would not want it to be Moon conjunct Saturn. Moon trine Saturn would embody the best of the parent/child kind of adult relationship. However, the conjunction would be too harsh, in my opinion Moon conjunct Sun is the classic best friends aspect. This aspects seems to kind of substitute for Moon trine Moon in many relationships that I see. However, it is not really a satisfying substitute. In time, there feels to be an emptiness. The emptiness can always be brought back to the Moon/Moon aspects. However, Moon conjunct Sun IS a best friend’s aspect and does have great value. Moon conjunct Uranus would be a shaking up of the Moon person by the Uranus person. This aspect needs to be seen in the light of the entire synastry but if there are no other Moon connections, I do not see the relationship lasting long term because this aspect is like electricity through the wires of the Moon person. It would be very jarring. It may rock the world of the Moon person, and the Uranus person, too. However, for home and hearth, I don’t see it as a positive. Moon conjunct Neptune may be a fogging of the perceptions of both people. There may be a sense of a romantic, foggy glow. However, without significant other bonding factors, this relationship may amount to someone whom you “thought” you knew but who turned out quite different. Moon conjunct Mars is a warlike aspect. It is the aspect of fighting and contention. It could exist if there were other compensating factors but it does not feel good. Moon conjunct Venus is lovely. This is a warm glow aspect. The Moon finds the Venus beautiful. The Venus finds the Moon very warm and gracious. This aspect feels good in any synastry Moon conjunct Mercury confers easy communication and understanding. This could substitute for Moon trine Moon or Moon conjunct moon. It would not be the same but it would be a nice second. This aspect allows the Mercury person to understand the heart of the Moon person and the Moon person to understand the Mind of the Mercury person. This is a lovely relationship. The same factors would hold true for Moon trine or sextile Mercury. Moon conjunct Chiron bodes for a fast friendship which feels like soul mate but an equally fast descent into either enemies or no relationship, and it is usually enemies. Chiron has a strange pattern. When it is in close conjunction with personal parts of chart in synastry, it follows the above pattern. It seems like longevity can remain when Chiron conjuncts the NN but it is longevity with pain. Chiron is the planet of pain, as you know. Moon conjunct the ASC makes for a very warm feeling between the couple. Both feel very familiar to each other like one feels with one’s cousins or childhood best friends.
I almost forgot my all time favorite Moon aspect. That would be Moon/Pluto. It is rare to find Moon/Pluto in a conjunction. It is rare to find it in a trine or even a square. However, Moon/Pluto is the stuff of romance novels. It is Heathcliffe running through the moors screaming the name of Kathy, It is once in a lifetime, usually. It is the one you will never forget. Moon/ Pluto is magic. It is the love that takes us out of this mundane world into the world where things work as they do in musicals. The beautiful man finds the beautiful women and they love each other forever. Moon/Pluto is the love that has the depths of the seas with the tenderness of the mother and her newborn baby. It is unique and if you have had it, you know. If not, watch for it! ------------------ Want To Ask Any Question About Bible Prophecy? Go For it. No, it's not. We have what you described above, literal telepathy (calling each other simultaneously, knowing what the other one is going to say, finishing each other sentences and really, really getting each other. We share things with each other we don't share with other people, and he himself told me that he loves these SOULFUL conversations we can have, because he can talk about those things with very few people in his life and i am one of them). And guess what? His Moon is almost unaspected, save for an opposition from Chiron and a conjunction to my NN (wide, 3.21 degrees). However, his 4th ruler is heavily aspected with my planets and is involved in a major configuration, which is all exact. Plus my stellium hits his 4th house. What i wanted to say, you can't generalize like that - if Moon has poor aspects, then the relationship has no soul. In my experience it's quite the opposite, but i won't generalize and say that you get the most soulful relationship if there is an unaspected Moon. Because you have to take everything into account and only then make any conclusions.

Thank you for posting the article, Ami. I see some things in there a bit different, but I agree the Moon connection is essential in synastry.Your article inspires me to check my Moon connection. In my current synastry I have Sun opp Sun (1) coupled with Moon sq Moon (2) and Sun/Moon sextile and BQ and many other aspects to our Moons. So far, it doesn't seem we aren't in sync, emotionally or that our needs are very different. One Moon is in Scorpio/2nd, the other in Leo/7th. The first thing these two Moons seem to have in common is fixity, so we understand each other's fixed emotional nature and fixed needs. I'd venture and say no one understands a fixed person better than another fixed person. Of course, compromise is needed when it comes to each one being stubborn lol but usually our common strong mutable features seem to take care of that. The Scorpio Moon is more introvert, moody, gloomy and intimistic than the Leo Moon. My Moon receives a trine from Neptune and his a trine from Sun in Pisces - no doubt some common connection here. My Moon also receives a sextile from Mercury and being in the 7th house, it is a relationship, social, empathic, harmony-oriented Moon. But his Moon's dis Pluto is in Libra 1st house and Mars in Gemini 9th house and here we have a more sociable, diplomatic, flexible, people-oriented side of the Scorpio/2nd house Moon (added to the trine to his Sun, which makes relationships and common understanding and ability to compromise very smooth). On the other hand, the disp of my Moon, my Sun, is in my 8th house along with all my personal planets and my MC in Scorpio, hence I do understand and feel and need the "Scorpionic" side of his Scorpio Moon. The Leo side of my Moon I hope can be understood by his Aqua/5th house personal planet stellium opposing it ------------------

Ami, I wrote on this as well a while ago. STARTING with the MOONs is essential. I agree. It gives a very good, broad strokes perspective of the relational dynamics.IP: Logged |

I don't subscribe to easy aspects (trine, sextile) in romantic synastry. I've seen way too many Sun-Sun, Moon-Moon and Mars-Moon squares or Sun-Sun, Moon-Moon, Sun-Venus, Mars-Venus oppositions for that. A romantic union requires tension, easy aspects don't provide it. IP: Logged |

Yes, one needs hard aspects but I don't think Moon hard aspects make for a real soul connection. People do not have to agree but that is my opinion. ------------------ Want To Ask Any Question About Bible Prophecy? Go For it. It is Free, of course. http://www.mychristianpsychic.com/

Moon trine Moon is rrrreally nice yess.. indeed, not much words are needed and as words are usually a source of friction and misunderstandings, it's indeed the jackpot. The telepathic effects are also pretty crazy now and then.Conjunct is another story haha. Too much of the same is an enervating experience. Less room for telepathic reception. It's US against the world. Not US against US.

That is interesting about Moon conj Moon. I have not had as much personal experience with it as Moon trine Moon.
I may have had it once with a girl and I was not wise enough to know how sensitive she was and I lost the friendship. I am a Cancer Moon and we are sensitive lol

Though I do not agree with everything in that article, I also think that the Moons are often underestimated in synastry. It is very we need to start imo. Along with the Moon with the other lunar symbols as well, plus the IC and 4th house ruler of course. Our whole life is determined or affected by the rhytm of the Sun-Moon-Earth-triad. So how can it NOT have a strong effect in astrology? As you can see I would expand on that, and include the Moon-phase and some other things. However basically speaking the Moon shapes a lot how we experience the world, and that has a lot of effect on how we get along with others. Yes, it is our starting point. Interestingly my own Moon does not have strong synastric aspects to Mr Sag`s chart, unless we count its sextile to Neptune (3°20) and trine to Pluto (4°16).
He definitely has a strong impact on my emotions though, even if the aspects seem to be less than strong. On another note my best friend and me have our Moon sextile each other (1°24); and that has proved to be a very nice little aspect in terms of emotional support, even despite my Saturn being square her Moon (1°15) and her Saturn being opposite my Moon (5°11) - in fact I have never experienced this one as depressing or down-putting, but rather in terms of an unusual sincerity and committing to the friendship (we also both have a natal Moon-Saturn-aspect; I have the quinkunx: 0°09; she has the trine: 3°47). Interestingly her Moon is conjunct my Draco Sun (0°04) in Aries, and my Moon is conjunct her Draco Sun (2°59) in Aquarius. So there is definitely a purpose and a stream of understanding, running underneath it all. Interestingly enough my Moon is conjunct her husband`s Moon (1°40), which is of course also sextile her Moon (0°16); her and me both met again at university, where we met him as well. In fact I even met him first; luckily there was never any kind of romantic interest on either side. However, it struck me even back then how great him and me got along from the moment we met. We just were "in tune", to the point that often I ended up explaining HIS behaviour to HER, when she couldn`t wrap her mind around why he did the things he did or what he was doing. I think the biggest complaint she was having about her husband as well as me at that time was that we were "unconventional", which was pure horror to her back then, having been taught to always stick to the status quo, compromising her own personality and bending it so it would at least seem like she "fit". Something neither her husband nor me were ever capable of or even thinking of doing I suppose. lol Over the course of the years however I must say the most unconventional one of us three certainly is HER (Aries Moon in 11th house; Draco Sun in Aquarius - you can`t keep that pioneering spirit down forever. Not even with a Virgo Sun and a stellium in LIbra. lol) Interestingly her Draco ASC is in Sagittarius, exactly conjunct my tropical ASC (0°03). lol I know it does not have anything to do with our Moons (well of course the Draco zodiac is as moon-related as can be ).

Great article topic Ami!I do have to agree with Selene though, that an unaspected moon isn't always a game ender for a soulful connection. For me, Venus rules not only my Taurus moon, but my IC in Libra, as well. Two of my most meaningful, soul touching relationships have found my moon almost completely (if not 100%) unaspected, but my Venus in contact with almost every planet in my partners' charts. I guess it just depends on the person and the natal. Don't get me wrong, moon trine moon is amazing! But these people have only been friends for me. IP: Logged |

Another well written article AA. Thanks for sharing. I personally do not like trine moons. I probably don't like them because for me that would put two fire moons together. I find that when two fire moons flare up at the same time it's bad!
