I can tell you about a recent example of a couple who have been dating a bit over a year now. His natal Saturn/Uranus/Neptune all square his Venus within 2 degree.
All those outer planets square her Venus at about 8 degree in her natal chart.
In synastry his outer planets square her Venus at 9 degree or not at all.
But her outer planets form a pretty tight square to his Venus! (2-4 degrees)
(Their birthdays are a couple weeks apart)
In composite that Venus square from Saturn/Uranus/Neptune repeats itself within 3-4 degrees.
You might think this relationship would never take of the ground, but it did. They’re still dating.
Since he has Capricorn Dsc and natal Saturn conj his Dsc, apparently he can handle this restrictive energy quite well for now. He’s also used to it because of his natal Venus squares.
So to answer your question: I’m convinced that the individual natal charts will decide how well someone will handle that energy. The natal chart is a blue print. It tells us what one expects from life and from relationships. The natal aspects represent your learning curve.
I can imagine that through this relationship he can finally live out that Venus/Saturn square and maybe ultimately get over it. (They met during their first Saturn Return.)
He chose this girl, because she seems to offer him other qualities that are worth the hassle. Her Venus conj his Juno and her Sun his SN. These are strong aspects and explain the initial pull. This is what makes it stick.
When their relationship purpose gets fulfilled, they might part ways though. Because in their case I doubt it would be sustainable. (badly aspected compVenus// no synastry aspects to NN// no positive Saturn aspects beside the square)
So to analyze your particular situation, look at the natal charts first. What personal issues do they have? What are their individual relationship needs? What are other Saturn and Venus aspects in Synastry and what does the Composite chart look like?
A 9 degree square is not as significant as a 1 degree square, but it might still be felt when activated by transits. Look at upcoming transits! That will further your story.
As to how it’s felt: I read somewhere that the Saturn person dampens the Venus person’s enthusiasm. It slows down their approach to love. It acts critically towards Venus’ values, taste, self-expression and confidence. The motivator behind that behavior varies and depends on Saturns personality. So it’s either commitment issues, low-confidence, fear of being loved and rejected, or sometimes it’s just the way their personality works. Some people are just naturally critical and pessimistic.
