Hrmphh. I finally had to break down and get the Diatomaceous Earth out last week, due to the hobo spiders coming out, and the ant population becoming really bothersome in our back yard. Mostly I leave them be, because they don't really do much harm to the garden or anything, but...ugh. When a population starts to take over your yard (and their bites sting a bit!), I suppose it's realistic to set some boundaries (and these ants are not deterred by cinnamon, unfortunately). I had to do the same thing with the slugs. It bums me out to hurt living creatures when they're not a huge threat to us, but I have to draw the line when our entire strawberry patch is being eaten, as well as our squash flowers! Well anyway...the ants are generally okay, I didn't go too far out of my way to pester them this year. IP: Logged |

I don't know. I was afraid it gave them a hotfoot, and I knew you wouldn't care for that thought. That's not it, though. Cause the Organic Gardener and BeeKeeper who showed me just used Cinnamon Sticks at the base of the hive stand, and it worked just fine. Probably messes with their trail scent. IP: Logged |

Hope the ants steer clear and everyone gets along. quote: Originally posted by Violets: Hrmphh.I finally had to break down and get the Diatomaceous Earth out last week, due to the hobo spiders coming out, and the ant population becoming really bothersome in our back yard. Plectranthus Neochilus, this should work quite well, it is very stinky and most of the insects do not like strong smells.. It grows on the floor like mind, you can easely surround your garden with it.. And I have heard Ants only do something when there is something wrong with the platn, and after 2 or lees/more years they leave, after having done theyr job IP: Logged |

That's odd...were you sending me telepathic vibes to come here? I just had an inexplicably strong feeling that someone had posted something for me in LL a few minutes ago (seriously). Since I haven't been as active lately (but peek in now and again to see if I can be of assistance, or if there's something I want to comment on), that is interesting! Anyhoo, the ants were reasonable this year. We weren't sure whether or not we were going to sell our home, so (unfortunately) we didn't pay as much attention to our garden this past year. So far, so good. IP: Logged |
