Did you know... ... In China's Sechuan Province, farmers climb ladders and pollinate apple blossoms by hand. Reason: too many pesticides, no wild bees. Beekeepers refuse to bring in hives because of the excessive pesticide use. ... Honeybees are not native to the US. Our fruit production doubles with native bee pollinators compared to European honeybees. Maine has 270 native bee species but they ship in more than 20,000 honeybee Hives because there is not enough agriculture to sustain native bees year round. ... If you cut an apple in half and there are TWO seeds inside each point of the 5-point star then you know the apple was COMPLETELY pollinated by bees. Otherwise, not enough pollen reached the apple and as a result the fruit will look lopsided and small. ... The head of a sunflower has hundreds of individual flowers that each need a bee visit in order to produce a seed. That's hundreds of bee visits or no sunflower seeds. Be aware that there are pollen-less varieties of sunflowers to avoid. IP: Logged |

MoonWitch, I'm excited for you.I wonder if I could get a box and keep native bees for pollination and forget about collecting the honey. IP: Logged |

I found out you can tie bundles of short bamboo stalks and/or wooden straws together, of varying diameters, to make a bee house. You must cut them the same length and plug them at one end, keeping the opposite ends open for the bees to enter and lay their eggs. IP: Logged |

There were bee houses displayed at the local Ag Center, Master Gardeners event. Some were very pretty. Looked like bird houses but with natural bamboo straws. They should be put up on the South side of your house just like bat houses. If you want to attract mason bees you can drill holes, 3-5 inches deep, in an untreated piece of lumber. IP: Logged |

I know colony collapse is a big problem in many areas, though. IP: Logged |
