T O P I C R E V I E Wstarr33Has anyone cut out sugar, specifically refined sugar from their diet? Did you go cold turkey or was it a gradual process? If so, did you have any withdrawal symptoms? What were they? How long did they last?Have you experienced any positive side effects, ie, clearer skin, more energy, positive attitude.I just through out granulated, powdered, and brown sugar. Yikes! I must confess I made a batch of chocolate rum balls to give me a decent send-off, because I'm terrified of just stopping. I'd like to have a couple a day, maybe freeze them.I know what the internet says, but I'd like to here it from you. Lol. ail221 quote:Originally posted by starr33:Has anyone cut out sugar, specifically refined sugar from their diet? Did you go cold turkey or was it a gradual process? When I attempted cold turkey it was very difficult and sugar is just in everything and I gave up within a week. Then I gradually began using sugar substitutes for a few years but those aren't really good for your body either. At the moment I have transition to just use raw sugar or agave moderately. For now this has been the best for me. starr33Thank you, ail221, I was thinking of doing the same thing. Have you used agave in desserts? ail221Yes Agave works really well in desserts! or you could even just use pure Honey.RandallSometimes I crave sugar, but not often.------------------"Fall down 100 times, get up 101...this is success." --MEsunshine9Gulp.. I should do that too, I really should, but haven't yet.One thing I do is try to use honey in hot drinks (like tea) in place of sugar - that gets you used to a less sweeter taste, and can help wean you away if you decide to do it slowly. Can I ask why you're cutting sugar from your diet?SagittariusRisingI substitute with liquid stevia and organic raw honey which I love because stevia is hypersweet (but slightly bitter too), so you can't use too much. And honey is really beneficial, and it's also pretty sweet so a tablespoon usually does the trick. To help with cravings, I use chromium polyniconate (the brand ChromeMate) which balances the blood sugar. I feel like it helps, but it could be a placebo effect especially when I use honey/stevia. When I used to go cold turkey with no supplements/substitutions, I was very irritable and restless. The thoughts of ice cream and cake, etc. CONSUMED me! LOLSunChildI don't find sugar addictive, although I do not eat sugar- like processed or in sweets, I do eat a lot of fruit and eat cacao treats with agave nectar.Maybe I get enough as it is. The brain requires glucose so make sure you are getting enough or it's easy to become cranky.frankie2912i quit refined sugar/added sugar a few years ago...i quit cold turkey, and did it for 3 whole weeks! quite an accomplishment for a sugar junkie like me..i felt great, i had headaches and cravings for a couple days but that was it. unfortunately, all it took was a granola bar to send me right back to over-indulging.it's a good goal to have, cutting added sugars. refined sugar in excess is sooo bad for you.Desiring Shadows- turquoiseturtleBeing hypoglycemic I had to cut out sugar from my diet and it took some time to readjust. Try doing it gradually, keeping in mind also your taste buds have been bombarded by all the refined sweetness and it may take a few weeks at least before your palate adjusts. In baked goods using substitutes found naturally in fruits (like apple sauce) works well too. Or just grabbing for some sort of fruit when you have a sweet tooth, so fructose metabolizes in its natural state in the body. I'm not sure about cutting sugar cold turkey just do what seems best for you!turquoiseturtleOh I forgot to mention, yes I had tons of positive side effects including the clearer skin, more energy, and just feeling more lifted and not so foggy. My blood sugar crashes were probably more intense since I'm really sensitive to it. But there was a major overall improvement in how I felt altogether. It's worth it, plus it'll help drop some pounds, which is always nice. unhappyapathy quote:Originally posted by Desiring Shadows:- unhappyapathyI guess what they say about sugar making people hyper is true. I tried to cut it out for a week . Sugar is everywhere, even in pasta, rice, bread, desserts, pies... The list goes on and on.I've always loved really sweet drinks. Actually this is what's caused me to gain so much weight. mirage29I have to watch out for 'sugar intensive' foods. Cake, yes. Fudge, no.My body overproduces insulin, but have learned to manage now. I just avoid too MUCH sugar. If I do sugar, I make sure to balance with protein to meet any downswing.Got my sugar in balance through complicated carbohydrates... namely, boiling a potato and eating one every day. For MY body, this does the trick when things are out of kilter.Chocolate is good... RX, suck on 3 M&Ms and call me in the morning! (and BTW, warning: avoid any M&Ms that have Ws on them-- throw 'em back!)
