T O P I C R E V I E WGlaucusHouse formally apologizes for slavery and Jim CrowBy JIM ABRAMS, Associated Press Writer Tue Jul 29, 7:05 PM ETWASHINGTON - The House on Tuesday issued an unprecedented apology toblack Americans for the wrongs committed against them and theirancestors who suffered under slavery and Jim Crow segregation laws.ADVERTISEMENT"Today represents a milestone in our nation's efforts to remedy theills of our past," said Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, D-Mich.,chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus. The resolution, passed by voice vote, was the work of TennesseeDemocrat Steve Cohen, the only white lawmaker to represent a majorityblack district. Cohen faces a formidable black challenger in a primaryface-off next week.Congress has issued apologies before — to Japanese-Americans for theirinternment during World War II and to native Hawaiians for theoverthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom in 1893. In 2005, the Senateapologized for failing to pass anti-lynching laws.Five states have issued apologies for slavery, but past proposals inCongress have stalled, partly over concerns that an apology would leadto demands for reparations — payment for damages. The Cohen resolution does not mention reparations. It does commit theHouse to rectifying "the lingering consequences of the misdeedscommitted against African-Americans under slavery and Jim Crow."It says that Africans forced into slavery "were brutalized, humiliated, dehumanized and subjected to the indignity of beingstripped of their names and heritage" and that black Americans todaycontinue to suffer from the consequences of slavery and Jim Crow lawsthat fostered discrimination and segregation. The House "apologizes to African-Americans on behalf of the people ofthe United States, for the wrongs committed against them and theirancestors who suffered under slavery and Jim Crow.""Slavery and Jim Crow are stains upon what is the greatest nation onthe face of the earth," Cohen said. Part of forming a more perfectunion, he said, "is such a resolution as we have before us today wherewe face up to our mistakes and apologize as anyone should apologizefor things that were done in the past that were wrong."Cohen became the first white to represent the 60 percent blackdistrict in Memphis in more than three decades when he captured a 2006primary where a dozen black candidates split the vote. He has soughtto reach out to his black constituents, and early in his term showedinterest in joining the Congressional Black Caucus until learning thatwas against caucus rules.Another of his first acts as a freshman congressman in early 2007 wasto introduce the slavery apology resolution. His office said that theHouse resolution was brought to the floor only after learning that theSenate would be unable to join in a joint resolution.More than a dozen of the 42 Congressional Black Caucus members in theHouse were original co-sponsors of the measure. The caucus has notendorsed either Cohen or his chief rival, attorney Nikki Tinker, inthe Memphis primary, although Cohen is backed by several seniormembers, including Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich.,and Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel, D-N.Y. Tinker isthe former campaign manager of Harold Ford, Jr., who held Cohen's seatuntil he stepped down in an unsuccessful run for the Senate in 2006. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080729/ap_on_go_co/slavery_apology I couldn't help noticing that Venus is trine Eris less than 1 degree orb.of course...Pluto in Sagittarius is an appropriate placement forethnic related apology.direct midpoints:Uranus conjunct Neptune/Eris - '17 applyingPluto oppose Saturn/Eris - '44 applyingInterested in Eris in regards to diversity, ideology, ethnic relations issues,civil/equal rightsRaymond ------------------Stop The Misdiagnosing Of Neurodivergentshttp://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/stop-the-misdiagnosing-of-neurodivergentskoiflowerwhat are great step - acknowledging past wrongs!!in fact - Yippee!!AzulIt's about time. Cities around the country, includingObama's home of Chicago, have endorsed the idea, and so has a majorunion, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.Obama has worked to be seen as someone who will bring people together, not divide them into various interest groups with checklists ofdemands. Supporting reparations could undermine that image and makehim appear to be pandering to black voters."Let's not be naive. Sen. Obama is running for president of the UnitedStates, and so he is in a constant battle to save his political life,"said Kibibi Tyehimba, co-chair of the National Coalition of Blacks forReparations in America. "In light of the demographics of this country,I don't think it's realistic to expect him to do anything other thanwhat he's done."But this is not a position Obama adopted just for the presidentialcampaign. He voiced the same concerns about reparations during hissuccessful run for the Senate in 2004.There's enough flexibility in the term "reparations" that Obama canoppose them and still have plenty of common ground with supporters. The NAACP says reparations could take the form of government programsto help struggling people of all races. Efforts to improve schools inthe inner city could also aid students in the mountains of WestVirginia, said Hilary Shelton, director of the NAACP's Washington bureau."The solution could be broad and sweeping," Shelton said. The National Urban League — a group Obama is to address Saturday —avoids the word "reparations" as too vague and highly charged. But thegroup advocates government action to close the gaps between whiteAmerica and black America.Urban League President Marc Morial said he expects his members topress Obama on how he intends to close those gaps and what action hewould take in the first 100 days of his presidency."What steps should we take as a nation to alleviate the effects ofracial exclusion and racial discrimination?" Morial asked. The House voted this week to apologize for slavery. The resolution, which was approved on a voice vote, does not mention reparations, butpast opponents have argued that an apology would increase pressure forconcrete action.Obama says an apology would be appropriate but not particularlyhelpful in improving the lives of black Americans. Reparations couldalso be a distraction, he said.In a 2004 questionnaire, he told the NAACP, "I fear that reparationswould be an excuse for some to say, 'We've paid our debt,' and toavoid the much harder work."Taking questions Sunday at a conference of minority journalists, Obamasaid he would be willing to talk to American Indian leaders about anapology for the nation's treatment of their people.Pressed for his position on apologizing to blacks or offeringreparations, Obama said he was more interested in taking action tohelp people struggling to get by. Because many of them are minorities,he said, that would help the same people who would stand to benefitfrom reparations."If we have a program, for example, of universal health care, thatwill disproportionately affect people of color, because they'redisproportionately uninsured," Obama said. "If we've got an agendathat says every child in America should get — should be able to go tocollege, regardless of income, that will disproportionately affectpeople of color, because it's oftentimes our children who can't affordto go to college."One reparations advocate, Vernellia Randall, a law professor at theUniversity of Dayton, bluntly responded: "I think he's dead wrong."She said aid to the poor in general won't close the gaps — poor blackswould still trail poor whites, and middle-class blacks would still lagbehind middle-class whites. Instead, assistance must be aimed directlyat the people facing the after-effects of slavery and Jim Crow laws, she said."People say he can't run and get elected if he says those kinds ofthings," Randall said. "I'm like, well does that mean we're really notready for a black president?" http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080802/ap_on_el_pr/obama_slavery_reparations I am with Barack Obama on this one. I don't believe in reparations. Ido believe that the apology was ok though. After all, other groups ofpeople were apologized for being wronged like the Japanese Americanswho were placed in camps. I agree with Obama that the Native Americansshould also get an apology too. I actually thought that they got onebefore. I have a cousin(actually 2nd cousin, first removed...she'srelated to me through the Portuguese on my mom's dad's father'sside)that is half Miwok Native American on her father's side who is achairman of Rancheria Vista Native American tribe, and she gets a lotof money. She has the capability of starting casinos that generate alot of profit. I wasn't sure how much money Native Americans got forwrongdoings.any ways...I believe that more money needs to be put intoschools...especially in the predominant poor black areas. I believethat all the poor should be helped out in some way,but they have tohelp themselves too.any ways...Obama isn't just for black people. He's for all people. There shouldn't be any worry that he's too biased on the black side tobe president of the United States. Obama is not running to presidentof Black America. He is running to be president of United States ofAmerica.Raymond------------------

The man with a serious chance to become the nation's first blackpresident argues that government should instead combat the legacy ofslavery by improving schools, health care and the economy for all.
"I have said in the past — and I'll repeat again — that the bestreparations we can provide are good schools in the inner city and jobsfor people who are unemployed," the Illinois Democrat said recently.
Some two dozen members of Congress are co-sponsors of legislation tocreate a commission that would study reparations — that is, paymentsand programs to make up for the damage done by slavery.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored Peoplesupports the legislation, too. Cities around the country, includingObama's home of Chicago, have endorsed the idea, and so has a majorunion, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
Obama has worked to be seen as someone who will bring people together, not divide them into various interest groups with checklists ofdemands. Supporting reparations could undermine that image and makehim appear to be pandering to black voters.
"Let's not be naive. Sen. Obama is running for president of the UnitedStates, and so he is in a constant battle to save his political life,"said Kibibi Tyehimba, co-chair of the National Coalition of Blacks forReparations in America. "In light of the demographics of this country,I don't think it's realistic to expect him to do anything other thanwhat he's done."
But this is not a position Obama adopted just for the presidentialcampaign. He voiced the same concerns about reparations during hissuccessful run for the Senate in 2004.
There's enough flexibility in the term "reparations" that Obama canoppose them and still have plenty of common ground with supporters.
The NAACP says reparations could take the form of government programsto help struggling people of all races. Efforts to improve schools inthe inner city could also aid students in the mountains of WestVirginia, said Hilary Shelton, director of the NAACP's Washington bureau.
"The solution could be broad and sweeping," Shelton said.
The National Urban League — a group Obama is to address Saturday —avoids the word "reparations" as too vague and highly charged. But thegroup advocates government action to close the gaps between whiteAmerica and black America.
Urban League President Marc Morial said he expects his members topress Obama on how he intends to close those gaps and what action hewould take in the first 100 days of his presidency.
"What steps should we take as a nation to alleviate the effects ofracial exclusion and racial discrimination?" Morial asked.
The House voted this week to apologize for slavery. The resolution, which was approved on a voice vote, does not mention reparations, butpast opponents have argued that an apology would increase pressure forconcrete action.
Obama says an apology would be appropriate but not particularlyhelpful in improving the lives of black Americans. Reparations couldalso be a distraction, he said.
In a 2004 questionnaire, he told the NAACP, "I fear that reparationswould be an excuse for some to say, 'We've paid our debt,' and toavoid the much harder work."
Taking questions Sunday at a conference of minority journalists, Obamasaid he would be willing to talk to American Indian leaders about anapology for the nation's treatment of their people.
Pressed for his position on apologizing to blacks or offeringreparations, Obama said he was more interested in taking action tohelp people struggling to get by. Because many of them are minorities,he said, that would help the same people who would stand to benefitfrom reparations.
"If we have a program, for example, of universal health care, thatwill disproportionately affect people of color, because they'redisproportionately uninsured," Obama said. "If we've got an agendathat says every child in America should get — should be able to go tocollege, regardless of income, that will disproportionately affectpeople of color, because it's oftentimes our children who can't affordto go to college."
One reparations advocate, Vernellia Randall, a law professor at theUniversity of Dayton, bluntly responded: "I think he's dead wrong."
She said aid to the poor in general won't close the gaps — poor blackswould still trail poor whites, and middle-class blacks would still lagbehind middle-class whites. Instead, assistance must be aimed directlyat the people facing the after-effects of slavery and Jim Crow laws, she said.
"People say he can't run and get elected if he says those kinds ofthings," Randall said. "I'm like, well does that mean we're really notready for a black president?" http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080802/ap_on_el_pr/obama_slavery_reparations
I am with Barack Obama on this one. I wasn't sure how much money Native Americans got forwrongdoings.
any ways...I believe that more money needs to be put intoschools...especially in the predominant poor black areas. I believethat all the poor should be helped out in some way,but they have tohelp themselves too.
any ways...Obama isn't just for black people. He's for all people. There shouldn't be any worry that he's too biased on the black side tobe president of the United States. Obama is not running to presidentof Black America. He is running to be president of United States ofAmerica.
