woah cakes | do you use a different orb degree for each? i tend to think that within three degs is best but think anything up to 7ish is relevant, with decreasing strength after 3. except luminaries, then i go with 10 (or anything else compelling and indicating a pattern which would increase the relevance of a certain aspect). but is there a difference between natal and synastry? should we allow more in natal since we automatically relate to ourselves? also why does astro.com default to 10 degree orbs? i wasn't aware liz green was so liberal in her view on orbs. |
Ceridwen | Most people I know allow a tighter orb for synastry. The reason I have heard was that there were two people involved. Well, to me the reasoning is pragmatic, but not necessarily an astroLOGICAL one. |
woah cakes | yeah that makes sense to me. what orb do you use in natal though? |
Ceridwen | 6 degrees. This is the orb that relates to a fullmoon or new moon. I do sometimes expand the orb to 7-8 degrees though, under certain circumstances (aspects to a stellium, in which other aspects are clearly under 6 degrees; midpoint-activation; parallel or antiscia being present simultaneously). 6 degree is the orb I feel most comfortable with; anything beyond that I feel I might be reaching or just think it is working, due to what I want to find.
orbs under 3 degrees are VERY strong though. I think I would consider orbs "in steps".
Like 00-02 degrees are very strong and almost "inescapable". orbs of 7 degrees, might still be felt somewhat, but more like a background energy. I think that the tighter orbs are usually focal points (unless the planetary composition is emphasized in other ways already; if someone has Moon in SCorpio in 8th house and the ruler of 4th house conjunct the ruler of 8th house, plus Sun exactly conjunct Moon/Pluto-mp, then an 8 degree Moon-Pluto-trine might definitely be felt; though to be exact what is felt is the union of Moon and Pluto in this personality, and that is already emphasised in other ways). EDIT: I bascially use the same orb in synastry. Though usually I am looking out for aspects under 5 or even 3 degrees. If there are none there, it usually indicates two souls that are only loosely in contact.
|
Venus De Milo | I do the same for synastry and I have found it relevant - up to 5 degrees. But anything 3 - 5 degrees I dont consider as strong, but it is still relevant. |
woah cakes | i guess it's sort of a play it by ear type thing based on the themes and patterns hey? thanks for the answers! they both make sense to me. i did my chart with a 65% orb and i had way fewer red lines! yay ceridwen, i'm curious, how does 6 deg relate to the full moon?

Capriquarius | In classical astrology, orbs weren't used. Source: "Understanding the Birth Chart" by Kevin Birk http://www.amazon.com/Astrology-Understanding-Birth-Kevin-Burk/dp/1567180884/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325816217&sr=8-1

littlecloud | ^ yep whole signs. Funny thing is that Coffee and IQ both changed how I do astrology. I use wider orbs than most people and everything in equal house. If a chart isn't in equal, it's invalid to me. |
Capriquarius | I see the relevance of orbs when it comes to transits. Too bad Coffee took off, he was refreshing. -"astro-excited woman" LOLOLOL |
littlecloud | It's funny how they both have opposing views yet shaped my own look into astrology very much. I like different ways of looking at things. And yes I'd have to agree with the orbs and transits. |
Capriquarius | Some quotes I Googled for ya: F. Scott Fitzgerald pointed out, “The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function.” (Yay Libra...? As long as you're functioning!) "Nobody knows how astrology works. It's a problem, but somebody out there is working on it." - Debbi Kempton-Smith, "Secrets From A Stargazer's Notebook" |
littlecloud | hahahaha!!!! I like that one |
Capriquarius | Have you read it? |
woah cakes | yeah, that's one of my fave quotes! (the fitzgerald one) good good. i love the artistic element of astrology, it's fun! |
littlecloud | Nah I haven't but now I'm intrigued. Also!!!! Orbs!!!! I would take a closer look at them in terms of twins and people born around the same time. However it's amazing how much the element of chart changes with the asc and house rulers. It becomes an entirely different creature, just like the person...hehe |

ceridwen, i'm curious, how does 6 deg relate to the full moon?
I was basing that of what I have been reading in a book by Bernd Mertz many many years ago. He said that a fullmoon is really considered full only on the day it happens, so 24 hours, 12 hours approaching, 12 hours separating, which equals 6 degrees applying and separating.
BUT of course this is debatable; as a matter of fact the fullmoon is astronomically not totally exactly defined (the duration of it). Some even say it is only full during the exact moment. Anyway, another thing that I checked was ecclipses, as these ARE astronomically defined.
Take the one from june 2011 as example; it was one of the longest possible ones. its duration (penumbrial part) was 5 hours 39 minutes; the totality of course was much shorter. The orb that relates to that phenomenone is VERY narrow though: only about one degree applyng / separating, which is why I think exact aspects are so important. But anyway, I do feel comfortable with orbs up to the 6 degree frame (as as guiding line), but not beyond that. EDIT: I also found on most astronomical sites I have been checking that the fullmoon is considered full only on the day the exact opposition of Sun and MOon happens, even though it may "look" full on the day before and after that as well. |

Ceridwen | my categorization for orbs (in natal): ---------------------------------------00°-01°:: insistent(ly felt) 01°-03°: strong 03°-04°: medium (strong) 04°-05°: medium (weak) 05°-07°: weak 07°-08°: very weak For synastry I usually do not go beyond 5°, and expect to see at least some significant aspects under 3°.
|
Mermaid | What about orbs for composite chart, same as synastry ? |
Ceridwen | Same as natal as the composite is like a natal chart of the relationship. (the first meeting chart would probably be the "real" natal of the relationship though). |
VenusDiSirius | Synastry-up to 3 degree. Natal,up to 5,with exeptions of Moon,Mercury and Sun which can handle wide(er) orbs. -out of sign aspects under 3 degree. -I'd consider wider orb depending on the rest of chart,eg if someone has strong Uranus action in natal,I might rule in 7 degree oppo to Venus (personal planet, with emphasis on receptive ones, like Moon,Venus) -I would allow wider orbs with hard aspects

Great! Then I need to plan our first meeting chart carefully...LoL |
Ceridwen | No use planning. It always comes differently than you have planned. But always in accordance to what is really going on. |
Mermaid | Ceridwen, what about the orbs for comparing Composite to Natal conjunction? |
Ceridwen | 3-4 degrees. I make mental notes to conjunctions up to 5 degrees though, but those under 3 degrees are really serious. |
