SecretGardenAgain | Interestingly the world doesnt include the US in this map. lol. well as we all can imagine, it was first native american religions then Christianity, so just keep that in mind. But besides that it is VERY interesting to put in perspective the worlds oldest religions, fastest growing ones, and etc. I do wish they had included Zoroastrianism in there however, (and Japanese Shinto religion) because at one time Zoroastrianism and Christianity were neck to neck--it could have gone either way (literally). Zoro's lost the battles and Christianity found a way to adapt to many many different cultures (sometimes thru compromises with pagans....Christmas day and Sunday origins for instance). http://mapsofwar.com/ind/history-of-religion.html |
pidaua | I'm confused because I can see the US on this map. It is located on the Left hand side about halfway between 570 and 2000 AD. The American Indian religions were not organized like Hinduism, Islam or Christianity. Most traditions were tribe / band specific. |
SecretGardenAgain | I couldnt see it on my home comp but I can see it clearly on my work comp. Must have been a video issue at home! I see it now.

SecretGardenAgain | I think its funny how the green part of Islam expands then contracts a little bit then expands. Like a kid coloring and then erasing then coloring then erasing. Yes I know thats such a mature example. haha. And Christianity takes off after 1800 like a huge bubble enveloping all of europe. Makes you think what was going on there (northern and eastern europe) before Christianity reached there. I mean in terms of organized religion.

BornUnderDioscuri | Really cool, though i dunno Judaism in Israel isnt spreading the religion plus they do not proselytize. P.S. do u know anything about arabic parts in astrology, im trying to learn as much as I can cuz i LOVE them! Also how does Islam deal with astrology. I know it was common in Bagdhad before Mongol invasion but how does Islam exuse or accept it, its supersticion and I know Wahhab claimed Islam despises supersticion... |
thirteen | AH HA!!! Now i gotcha. Judism isn't spreading and they don't proselytize because the jews are the only race that reincarnates only as a jew . They do not reincarnate out of the race.... Now don't yell at me, you all are the ones talking here. I didn't start this conversation. |
BornUnderDioscuri | What do you mean by reincarnate? I never heard of it, sounds cool please explain. |
Dulce Luna | Thats really interesting, because people back at home insist that Islam was there even before Christianity and they're right. The Sultans were there even before the Portuguese. Although both still exist there today almost equally. But yeah, Christianity really took off when Imperialism/Colonialism....when all the missionaries wanted to "spread the word of God" to the "pagans". |
pidaua | I have one question. If one believes in the Bible and the creation of man / woman by God- then God would have been worshipped in the beginning right? When original sin resulted from an act of obtaining knowledge from the "devil" God promised to send his Son to die for the sins. Therefore, wouldn't that mean Christianity was already in the works? If God (and in my religion we believe in the Trinity- Father, Son, Holy Ghost as having existed throughout all of time) made all and made all men, wouldn't that mean all other religions came second? In the Old Testament it is spoken that the Son of God will come down to shed his blood for the sin of man. There was a belief in that Son- but when it was realized that Christ was sent to die for ALL humans, we saw a fraction within that belief system. Religion is too complex to review a simplified map of the spread of religion. Concrete beliefs predate the push of religion to increase numbers. I thought the map was brilliant, but like the disclaimer said- it was only really a visual not an actual display of the intricacies of how religion spreads throughout the world. |
SecretGardenAgain | Pidaua the answer to your qs is that every religion sees itself like that. Muslims believe that God created Adam as the first prophet in Islam. Mohammad was the last prophet in Islam, and Islam has existed since man was made. Muslims also believe that Jesus was a prophet in the entire line of prophets, not the son of God. You already explained Christianity's beliefs. Judaism believes that Jewish folks were the first truly monotheistic religion in the world (there is proof for and against that historically speaking). As far as I know from my Jewish studies, Jews trace their lineage from Abraham and Sarah, so before that they may consider the rest of the humans to not be Jewish, but exemplary men (Noah, Adam etc.) Hinduism is arguably the oldest religion in the world. So, talking in a context in which 'Adam' does not exist, the first documented organized religion on earth being Hinduism, or some earlier form of it, they of course believe that the first humans (and civilization) were Hindus. I have met Africans from Sub-sahara africa who have said that since the first human remains have been found in Sub-saharan Africa, indigenous African religions came first. So yeah I dont think Christianitys point is that unique. Everyone has the same point actually.

pidaua | I understand the differences in religions. Part of my education at a Lutheran university was to take numerous hours of religion, including World Religions with guest speakers that represented Islam, Hinduism, Judaism and Buddism. I just think trying to find the one true religion is impossible. Anyone can lay claim to believe in THE God that gave rise to Adam. That is why there is so much hate in the world. People kill and die in the name of religion. Yet I wonder if it is because they truly believe in that religion OR they have a propensity for violence anyway? I find the same type of people are attracted to causes that use violence to get their point across- such as the Animal Liberation Front, Anti-abortionists that blow up clinics and the Earth Liberation Front. Oh well... aint gonna bust my braincells on that. |
SecretGardenAgain | quote: I just think trying to find the one true religion is impossible. Anyone can lay claim to believe in THE God that gave rise to Adam.
Yah, I remember once I was sitting in on this Christian History class where the professor was discussing the different challenges Christianity was presented with (on an intellectual level) and how it replied to them. One was the argument of exclusivity versus inclusivity. If there is so much in common in world religions (particularly in Abrahamic religions) how can they claim to be completely exclusive of each other? And if they are inclusive, then why does one group go to hell but the other to heaven? That kind of argument. quote: That is why there is so much hate in the world. People kill and die in the name of religion. Yet I wonder if it is because they truly believe in that religion OR they have a propensity for violence anyway?
I would imagine its the second (good people find positive uses for religion, bad people find negative uses for religion and ways to be destructive). But I believe BR and DD had a discussion on this before and it kept sounding like a circular argument. |
