T O P I C R E V I E WZander916I'm looking for suggestions for indoor plants. I have seasonal allergies so anything that sends out a bunch of pollen is a no no. Usually house plants (my mom has many) don't seem to bother me but I just wanted to put that out there. Aside from the obvious of something to decorate with I have read that different kinds of plants could have different positive effects on our bodies and well being. So I'm just seeing if anyone has suggestions. Smaller plants. Example, I think my mother is going to give me a spider plant and something else. Just ones you can hang in a corner or set on a stand. Generally easy to take care of. hippichickDepends on your lighting. For a shady area I adore the Closet plant variety.I do, fortunately, very, very well with orchids, they thrive in bathroons and need only a few hours of INDIRECT light a day.Ivy's are always good and hearty. If you have some sun and want a tree effect, a Corn plant is a good consideration.African Violets do marvelously in grow lights or flourescent lights. The Ivy's and Spiders are almost fail proof.Goodness....me will think of more!hippichickCacti and succulents are also awesome!!!They need light, tho.How about a terreriam filled with mosses and tiny plants?Venus fly traps are fun and somewhat easy.I have had great success with crotons inside as well....a GREAT color add!Palms are beautiful, but very difficult and fineky unless you have the perfect humidity and lighting.O,, and you could stick an avacado seed suspended with toothpicks, barely entering a water substance and those are fun to grow. All in all, stick to your Ivy's and succulents and cacti for no allergies and the greatest rewards!Zander916 quote:Originally posted by hippichick:Depends on your lighting. The Ivy's and Spiders are almost fail proof.Goodness....me will think of more!Thank you so much and more ideas are welcome. Does that corn plant need direct light? I live in a small place with windows on the north side so the Sun doesn't shine directly in, but pretty good light obviously next to a window. There's a window on the east side that gets direct light in the mornings. It's a room that I don't spend a lot of time in but it may help anyway. I heard that they can release healthy gases and clean the air. I'll look into that corn plant in just a minute. I have a large sectional couch so there's a spot in the corner of the room behind it that I could put a large tree type plant. It's very near the north side window. I think getting some plants in here would improve my mood possibly and perhaps make my body feel good. Worth a shot! EDIT: Ohhhhhh... I think I saw a corn plant at my mothers place tonight. She has something somewhat similar also that looks really cool. I'm getting excited. LOL hippichickIt is also really cool to snip off varigated ivy's and put them in cool bottles and jars of water and watch em go!LOL!Will stop now...Been and indoor farmer for ages!hippichickYea, a corn plant would be good for what you have suggested, just dont over water! Not direct light but HIGH non direct light. They are fun cause you can cut and make them look like you desire. You can always purchase a grow light and add and accentuate your lighting to provide the best lighting for your plants.Zander916 quote:Originally posted by hippichick:It is also really cool to snip off varigated ivy's and put them in cool bottles and jars of water and watch em go!LOL!Will stop now...Been and indoor farmer for ages!LOL!! No you're fine. I may get into it. I need some things in here. I'm a single guy so I've always just been about function but I guess aging is changing me. I'll make a good wife one day... I mean husband. hippichickIf you want to get really ambitious a Ficus is hard, hard, but so lovely when you get em....hippichickreally, no indoor plant likes direct light cept cactus and succulents.I once had a coupla peyotes...they were doing wonderfully neath the flourescent grow lights with my violets, till a couple silly ass spaniels ate them one day...Boy, bet those dogs tripped!hippichickAnd, yes indoor flora, at any level is good!!!If you have any earth in you, you will do fine!Zander916 quote:Originally posted by hippichick:really, no indoor plant likes direct light cept cactus and succulents.I once had a coupla peyotes...they were doing wonderfully neath the flourescent grow lights with my violets, till a couple silly ass spaniels ate them one day...Boy, bet those dogs tripped! It would have been funny to see. I'll start simple and easy for now and see if I can manage to kill a hardy plant. LOL If I get into it then I'll move to harder stuff. This is all awesome information though! Zander916 quote:Originally posted by hippichick:And, yes indoor flora, at any level is good!!!If you have any earth in you, you will do fine!I have Mars, Mercury, and Venus in Virgo so hopefully! I go over to my mothers place and I love it. She has one that is climbing up the wall. It's pretty neat. I could see myself having a lot of plants. Just getting older and I think they're really pleasant to have around. hippichick quote:Originally posted by Zander916: I have Mars, Mercury, and Venus in Virgo so hopefully! You will do FINE!hippichickOOOO, another idea, a Norfolk Island PineThey are EASY and double as Christmas trees!ya know, I raised a GIANT corn plant for 20 years. It was behind a sectional as well, I drug that thing around from apartment to apartment. Fianlly settlen into my first home and it loved the skylights, albeit in a corner with no direct light and north west facing windows. It met it's demise when my cats began to use it as a litter box Zander916That's the second reason I won't have cats! (#1 is I'm allergic to cats. It's not bad if people keep up with cleaning)The little ******** are just destructive. They find ways into the cupboards, on the fridge, lay around on my laptop. I can't stand it. Plus throwing out their doody. I don't even have to throw mine out! Heck with that. Although they can be trained to use the toilet. lol Anyway yeah, I would be very upset about that. I think I'll get a Corn Plant and put it back there. hippichickResearch the care of them, shine the leaves with milk and you will have a lovely flora friend..for a long time!Zander916Oh, so do you find that these plants just make you happier at home? I mean, obviously because you enjoy plants, as I do also so that will probably always be true. But have you noticed anything for your health? More energy? Things like that? It might be difficult to know though if you've have plants for years. I guess I'll find out! Zander916 quote:Originally posted by hippichick:Research the care of them, shine the leaves with milk and you will have a lovely flora friend..for a long time!Yep! I definitely will research the care of them. In fact. I might keep a little folder or something for all of the plants I get to make sure. I'm a dork like that. LOL I'm making my own recipe book from all of those recipes posted on Facebook. It's irritating sometimes but I've had some yummy food so I guess it makes up for it. hippichickwell, yes! With plants and animals (sorry I am a crazy cat lady) we bring the outside in!Had an argument with my mother the other day.My storm door got busted by you know who.My (Virgo) mom says: "well you dont need one anyway..."I retort: ALOT of folks in my neighborhood have storm doors, as a way to bring the outside in!And it is BIG in real-estate now...outdoors/indoors.So, YES, bring those plants in. They are living things. With your Leo sun, you will take a huge amount of pride in raising them and with your Virgo you will care and nurture the earth. You, know, I am in Texas....you probably already know also, I am headed back home to the midwest.I was meandering an antique shop in Northern Indiana years ago, and I could kick my butt butt for not buying an 1860's tierd plant stand. We, as humans, need nature, we are connected to it in this funky matrix of be-ing.I have always been a fish keeper, as well. But since the house is on the market, have had to get rid of all of my lovly thingsTaurus moon.....Like I say, accentuate your corn with a grow light or two, situated in asthetically pleasing ways, and get up in the morn and come home to a friend. They feel..O, boy do they feel...Dont even get me started on the vegan/meat eater thing. It hurts me to cut my roses hippichickAnd yes, plants, like trees, give off co2, indoors, muchless, but just the joy of having a beaituful living flora in your place is healing in itself.I, for you, would highly suggest looking into an orchid as well. They can be finicky. Most only bloom at particular times of the year.I have my "orchid rehab" outside, in the shade, with a bunch of ferns. When they are mad at me and wont bloom, they go to the rehab and, eventually bloom. With some work and practice orchids are so darn beautiful, they require little care, IF they like the place they are in.I liken them to my betta fish. Shoot, sometimes I dont feed him for a few days...Fish like and thrive on this as do orchids...hippichick quote:Originally posted by Zander916: Yep! I definitely will research the care of them. If you put them in terrarium or whatever it is called and don't switch off the lights, it won't release CO2...good luck with the indoor nature quest though Ami Anne quote:Originally posted by Zander916:I'm looking for suggestions for indoor plants.
