deepseablues | Many do not know that when drinking most herbal teas, they need to not only be steeped for 15-30 minutes but the most crucial part is that most MUST BE COVERED. If not covered, the volatile oils present in these herbs which are the very things you want to consume escape with the steam and you are left with a very ineffective tea. This rule applies to the majority of herbal teas such as peppermint, chamomile, nettle, ginger etc etc. and although many do say this on the box many people either don't read it or or disregard it's importance which they shouldn't because it is literally the most important part, besides the hot water. Teas that are very stringent and contain a lot of tannins (such as black and green teas) are different and should usually only be steeped for 2-5 minutes to avoid a bitter taste and unpleasant feeling in the stomach. Also if you are drinking herbal teas for healing, ensure they are organic. If you have any questions about herbs/teas please do not hesitate to ask |
Valentine | Thanks for the info, I didn't know that. |
mirage29 | Wow, thanks! I've noticed that some tea shops sell pretty mugs with matching lids. I guess the lid serves a greater purpose than just keeping things warm. Thanks again, Deepseablues! |
deepseablues | Happy to help! I was shocked when I first found out too. It should be more well known somehow. And yes those cute cups do have multi-purpose! I found the cutest one at a thrift store Just want everyone to get the maximum benefit from their herbs and healing |
Selenite | I did not know this. Thank you ! |
PlutoSurvivor | Thanks, dsb. I knew about steeping them longer but not about covering them as with green and black teas. I also learned that with herbal teas for healing, the water must be heated to a boil to purify the water, but not steeped until the temperature drops a bit so the leaves don't burn and lose their healing properties. Perhaps you could let us know the most beneficial way to prepare a tea for health benefits? |
Stawr | I've been drinking elderberry tea all week cause I feel like **** . lol I would also like to get peppermint, ginger, and lavender tea. |
Randall | I always cover it while it steeps. I use 30 minutes. |
Randall | But that's regular black tea. |
Randall | Great hot, but better cold. |
Stawr | I have a few mugs with covers. I'm back at it again with the elderberry tea. Cause I over did it this weekend again. I now have peppermint tea. I want a stash of ginger tea, I read today that it is good for treating fevers. |

I love ice tea and make my own sometimes. I never enjoyed hot tea very much. And only use it if I'm not feeling well. |
Randall | Hot is good unsweetened with Chinese food. |
Stawr | I'll eat any chinese food as long as I have plum sauce! I put it on everything. |
