We watched them gather sticks and build it. For a couple weeks now, they have been taking turns guarding the babies while the other hunts for food. When one returns to feed, we can hear the babies gaping for the food. We have worried about these babies, with our harsh weather - rain, wind, and the hot sun beating straight down on them. So what happened ~ I was just in the backyard, and I heard a big commotion of crows squaking......they were chasing a HUGE Great Horned owl who was flying towards the nest; there must have been about 10 crows chasing this owl. The owl landed on the nest - I could not believe my eyes......it's wingspan and it's body was huge. Grabbed 2 dark things in each claw and flew off. By this time all crows were screaming bloody murder. I screamed, "nooooooooo!" and right away felt a sharp pain in my heart and began to cry. I ran in the same direction all were flying in. By this time, there must have been 35 crows chasing this owl in a huge swarm, and they all surrounded this tree far away..........squaking, and flying in circles. This was one of the most upsetting things I have ever witnessed in my life. <IMG SRC="http://www.linda-goodman.com/ubb/frown.gif"> I know it's just a part of nature, but we witnessed the pregnancy and raising of the babies. Oh, now my day is so saddened! What is amazing ~ the crows all gathered together and knew this owl was coming..........Also, so many other crows quickly arrived to help. I feel so bad for the parents. Anyhow, just wanted to share. </TD></TR><TR bgcolor="#F4D5F0"><TD valign=top>FishKitten</TD><TD>I'm so sorry you had to see that. It was coming from the park direction, and had something in it's mouth. The crows were squaking, and circling the owl. I didn't see this but my mother saw it and told me. I heard all the squaking though. The crows must be watching this owl or something. Then 3 crows went and landed on the same tree where the now "empty" nest is. </TD></TR><TR bgcolor="#FAEBF8"><TD valign=top>aqua</TD><TD>oh ! i can imagine how disturbing it would have been. take care..</TD></TR><TR bgcolor="#F4D5F0"><TD valign=top>TINK</TD><TD>I'm sorry, NephthysNature is beautiful ... but hard and holds no quarter. <IMG SRC="http://www.linda-goodman.com/ubb/blueheart.gif"></TD></TR><TR bgcolor="#FAEBF8"><TD valign=top>sue g</TD><TD>Oh,,,,,Horrible to see I would say,,,,,, <IMG SRC="http://www.linda-goodman.com/ubb/blueheart.gif">,,,,the poor mother....!!!On Saturday one of our cats had one of her kittens stolen, she went to look for it and dragged it back to our home, where she left it outside the door.Oh God the poor little thing had been attacked by another cat and it had left her with the head hanging off.....I was so distressed....she only has one kitten left now, She had three, and we think the same tom cat took them..... <IMG SRC="http://www.linda-goodman.com/ubb/frown.gif">I am so glad our 7 year old son didnt see this,,,,I cried and felt very sick, but he was quite good about it. The one little kitten left now....we have called her Angel,,,,as I have asked her to be protected.Oh...so so upsetting.... <IMG SRC="http://www.linda-goodman.com/ubb/frown.gif"></TD></TR><TR bgcolor="#F4D5F0"><TD valign=top>pidaua</TD><TD>That happened when a Hawk swooped down into our backyard and grabbed a little dove...feathers went everywhere. The good thing is that the death is quick (the force of actual hit combined with the claws usually knocks them out). Sorry - I am not cold - I just understand how the cycle has to work. PS.. on a darker note, in my culture (Apache) the owl is the symbol of death or impending death. I saw a small one under it. I thought it was trying to eat it so I immediately yelled get off it! and started coming towards the bird and it didn't even flinch. But then I noticed it was the mommy just keeping it warm. They kept kissing eachother. So sad that animals have to hunt others <IMG SRC="http://www.linda-goodman.com/ubb/frown.gif">Things like this affect me so much. It was awful. The mother bird was chasing him as he ran across the shed roof with the baby in his mouth and both mother and baby were screeching. I chased him and made him drop the baby and then we carefully wrapped the bird in a towel and took him back outside again in the vain hope that his mother would come for him. He was breathing so hard and was in so much shock. We've been checking on him all through the evening from a distance so as not to scare the parents off, but no other birds have come near him. He's now stopped breathing and moving so it seems safe to say that the poor little thing is dead. I feel awful. I know it's Bib's natural instinct etc but it's horrible to see him like that. He's always so affectionate and good natured with us which makes you temporarily forget that he's a preditor who can kill a baby. <IMG SRC="http://www.linda-goodman.com/ubb/frown.gif"></TD></TR><TR bgcolor="#FAEBF8"><TD valign=top>silvermoon</TD><TD>That is heart-wrenching, Nepthys.
