pidaua | I wonder if this applies to countries other than Germany? I am thinking that since LindaLand is based in the US, Germany has no authority over what we do and don't do. If they want to block out the site they can, similar to how China works. |
Moon666Child | The idea was to take precaution whatsoever! Moreover, I guess Us is a place whre you get sued for anything and everything! The bane of free speech perhaps! :P Anything is possible, better to take care, right?

The bane of free speech? Interesting that someone at a place meant to honor someone like Linda Goodman could even utter such a foolish thing. ------------------ Everything feels possible. Perhaps more is possible than we think. -P.H. |
Johnny | I know it's not my business, but that comment is confusing the heck out of me, Trillian. |
trillian | Free thought, ergo free speech, is a birthright, despite a government's ability to suppress it, publicly or privately. While I will certainly support the idea that all things exist within the Yin and Yang of life, capable of both light and dark, I cannot conceive of free speech being perceived as a curse. Linda Goodman was quite outspoken on her beliefs, and was able to express them relatively freely, whether they were well-received or not. I suppose my earlier statement was meant to show the irony of saying the bane of free speech in a place meant to honor a woman whose life was built on the ability to express herself freely about subjects not accepted or understood by the majority of her fellow countrymen. But I have to agree with you Johnny. I've confused the heck out of myself. For free speech to exist, it requires respect, tolerance and thick skin. People often think they have the right to take away another's right to free speech out of some ambiguous moral highground, or out of a need to control, or just out of a need to dictate manners. Best Wishes. ------------------ Everything feels possible. Perhaps more is possible than we think. -P.H. |
Johnny | Oh, Trillian, I get you now. I agree with you 100%, too. As usual. I took Moon666Child's words to mean that lawsuits are the bane of free speech, rather than that the bane of free speech makes lawsuits necessary. I might be way off base, but I think that was what he was saying. Different interpretations of the same words, I guess. Or am I misinterpreting you, now? Did I mention I like your signature? |
trillian | Johnny, you may be right, that I misinterpreted what Moon666Child said. In that case, I've created much ado about nothing. Though it's been awfully nice to have this small exchange with you; I always enjoy your posts very much, and when I make it to LL, I read them with great interest. My sig line...thank you. It has personal significance. ------------------ Everything feels possible. Perhaps more is possible than we think. -P.H. |

I beg to differ. ------------------ Welcome Home to GhostVillage |
Mirandee | There is a difference between "free speech" and verbal abuse. As far as free speech being a birthright in the U.S., yes it is but as the saying goes *placing hand in front of face* "where his begins, your rights end." Speaking one's mind honestly and giving one's opinion is great but no one has to put up with verbal abuse from others. Verbal abuse is not a birthright and some folks use "free speech" as a justification to verbally abuse others. |
Moon666Child | ^ I completely agree. but I also assume this is the same thing Trillian was mentioning too. Now, in general I was refering to the irresponsible issues people make in the name of free speech. ------------------ Welcome Home to GhostVillage |
trillian | quote: a birthright in the U.S
Personally, I never qualified any of my statements by mentioning any countries. Free speech is a birthright, period, even if one is born in a country that restricts that birthright. All governments of which I'm aware suppress speech to some extent. The ability to verbally abuse is a choice, and also a birthright. We hope that we don't grow into verbal abusers, but if we should, that's our choice. Whether or not someone accepts verbal abuse is also a choice. I would also say that verbal abuse is in the eye of the receiver; what I consider abuse, might not be to another. If we always worried about whether or not we would offend others, our ability to change and grow would be restricted. Manners are nice, but sometimes one must fight by exercising his or her ability to speak freely. I'm not fond of political correctness. It offends me. But isn't it lovely to express one's self? ------------------ Everything feels possible. Perhaps more is possible than we think. -P.H. |
Moon666Child | You are right Trillian, so long the "respect" is maintained! ------------------ Welcome Home to GhostVillage |
trillian | Interesting. And who defines "respect?" I used quotes only because you choose to use them. Respect, too, is in the eye of the receiver. Ain't life grand? ------------------ Everything feels possible. Perhaps more is possible than we think. -P.H. |
Johnny | Aww, Trillian, I don't know how to respond to that without sounding all gushy, so I'll just say "Thanks!" But at the risk of sounding like a broken record, I agree with you about the freedom of expression thing. To say that free speech is a birthright "in the United States" is to contradict the entire enlightened premise that our Founding Fathers had in mind when they formed this country! They recognized, rightly, that human beings are endowed with such things by our creator, and that these truths are self evident! Ooh, waxing Constitutional. Better stop. @ Trillian! |

WaterNymph | Linda’s free speech beliefs are admirable. Though in some areas of star signs she seemed to have forgotten opinions are subjective. Anyway, I doubt she would have sold millions if she verbally abused people in her books. With age comes wisdom I suppose. Guess I’ve still got a long way to go |
