Solane Star | Perfectionism “We have the need to be accepted and to be loved by others, but we cannot accept and love ourselves. The more self-love we have, the less we will experience self-abuse. Self-abuse comes from self-rejection, and self-rejection comes from having an image of what it means to be perfect and never measuring up to that ideal. Our image of perfection is the reason we reject ourselves the way we are, and why we don't accept others the way they are.” -- Don Miguel Ruiz “The maxim ‘Nothing but perfection’ may be spelled ‘Paralysis.’” -- Winston Churchill “After enough mirror gazing, we all develop our ‘cosmic sense of humor.’ We no longer try to be perfect, or try to get all our work done in time. We become content with whatever life brings. Just to deal with what comes up without crucifying ourselves or others is enough of a challenge.” -- Paul Ferrini “Good enough never is.” -- Debbi Fields |
Johnny | I've read that Michelangelo and J.C. Leyendecker were notorious perfectionists... "You admire the beauty of my spark, but you don't feel the cruelty of the hammer on anvil that causes it to happen." - Nietzsche I always like these topics you start, Solane. |
Xodian | Would life be interesting at all if we didn't strive for our individual areas of self-improvement? The day I stop striving to become better is the day I am breathing my last breath on this planet. I need goals... I need new experiences... Its what makes me feel alive to tell ya the truth. |
Mirandee | Ah, thank you for posting this, Star It's wonderful to just accept ourselves as we are and therefore be able to accept and like others as they are. It's wonderful to allow a little imperfection into your life and not have an image of what you should be, what you should attain, or how perfect you always have to be. It took a lot of years to come to like and accept myself as I am and it just feels wonderful to have reached that point in my life. I can breathe now!! LOL But you know what? I have discovered that I never run short of others who wish to change me and make me live up to an image that they think we should all be based on their own need for perfection. I just never seem perfect enough in everyway for them. |
AcousticGod | I think self-acceptance can go hand in hand with self-improvement. You can accept the materials you're working with while trying to improve their function. |

Mirandee | Very true, AG they should go hand in hand. Inner self-improvement should never stop. It should be a daily thing of trying anew each day to be a better person than we were the day before. People can't truly like and accept others as they are until they first like and accept themselves. Liking and accepting yourself the way you are does not mean that you shouldn't always be working for self-improvement. It just means that you are content with who you are and can admit your faults to yourself without beating up on yourself for not living up to some perfect ideal that you imagine you should be. Because we often project our perfect ideal outward to other people and become disallusioned by them if they don't live up to our ideal. Just some thoughts. |

Some people should stick this on their mirror |
