Dervish | This was done in my family. You were also supposed to wear something red, put a nickel under the plate, and have collard greens along with your peas. I understand others say the peas are no good without chitlins. And I think Germans replace collard greens with cabbage. |

GypseeWind | Oh, I remember that from being a child. My Grandma was from Italy, and she always served pork, sauerkraut, and cabbage rolls on New Years Day. I remember she would cook it all night in one of those pressure cooker things...I haven't thought of that in ages! |

Okay LEXX.. I'm scratching my head wondering if I may have had KFC for new years last year...hhhmmmm.... lol. It would really explain A LOT!! I had no idea about the red or the coin thing either... I'll try anything once lol. But my thing is.. I tried cooking navy beans with ham hocks and was really turned off by the little bones and all the fat from the ham hocks. So when I cook my black eyed peas, I'll just throw in a good hunk of ham. And the ham hock didn't give off as much meat as I would have liked. And another thing I miss about my Grandma's black eyed peas and cornbread is the thick corn bread with corn in it...yummerz!! I gots to get me a recipe!!! |

Peace & Purple | Every year! Black-eyed peas. I remember one year as a child, I refused to eat any and my mother begged me to eat just a spoonful. I love them now, especially with boiled okra on the side. YUMDIDDLLY! |

Yin | Just be prepared to cook them for a loooooooooooooooooooong time, Gypsee babe. Sorry, I don't have a recipe. I cooked them in my crock pot once. It took about 20 hrs. |
LEXX | Black-eyed peas? Just buy the canned versions if you do not want to start with dried ones. There are some good brands and flavored ones too. Add well cooked ham to them and do not overcook or they will get mushy. Hint, for dried beans...; add a wee bit of baking soda to the water or broth you cook your dried beans in. It helps to soften them,but watch it does not fizz over when you first add it! It will fizz! MAKE SURE YOU ADD IT SLOWLY AND STIR IT DOWN...OR ADD WHEN YOU START. Lentils are rather fast cooking, an hour or so is more than long enough usually. Dried beans are tricky, except for the white varieties. Soaking overnight can help. We eat alot of beans, lentils, peas here. "Dirty rice" is a yummy dish, and very adaptable too. Any meat, or not, and any bean(s), and any rice. It can be a long cook version or a quickie one. Season as you wish, from super spicy, to Cajun, to Mexican hot, to mild and curry like....even German versions and so forth. PS. Crock pots are great for keeping your bean dishes warm/hot, but in my opinion, not best for cooking the dried beans. Cook in plenty of broth until done, and then add to slow cooker or crock pot. GypseeWind | Thanks Lexx! will do the canned variety, just because, it's too late to soak and all that.... but I will add some bacon grease for the pork thing, and for the flavor. Dunno if I will like them, never had them, but I'm all up for tradition/superstition. Of course, I say this now, but, tomorrow, I'll probably just go to a restaurant and order them there. *Dee??? did you just say a BOX of vodka??? Like as in a case???
