So you're saying fear is the primary force in human behavior, rather than love and things like that?
I find that perversely refreshing, and quite possibly profound...it would explain a lot.
Not that I'm as certain as you are that fear is the primary consideration here, though I'd agree it's a powerful force, and that ignoring it usually gives it more power than less.
I may add something later that I've been thinking about, in regards to "don't speak of the devil or he will appear" and "if you acknowledge the possibility then you draw it to yourself" and even the baffling notion that you can protect people by keeping them ignorant or ignoring unpleasant realities.

I'd think the hazard here is it would tell you more about yourself that you, in turn, project into the words of the other that you're trying to dissect, with the end result being you know yourself and the other person even less than you did before.
Even when that's not the case, many have a hard time understanding that their subjective realities are neither objective nor universal. Even astrologers do this, and we have no excuse for it. I catch myself doing it at times no matter how much I try to stop it, and if I (who likes to observe people for my characters in stories) keep doing it, then I'm certain most other people are even more prone to it, and it sure looks that way.
