T O P I C R E V I E WSpringtimeflowerHi Stoika,I saw you mentioning your writing on MoonMystic's exchange thread. When you edit or write, how do you know there's enough background info--descriptions of places, buildings, etc.The character development, story flow, and transitions come easier for me.Thank you,SpringStoika7Hi dear, do you mean full knowledge of the place where the story takes place?I try to always to write only about places that I really know well and I'm familiar with, as much as possible. Then, otherwise, I also use google maps and street view as a support. for cultural/artistic background or mention I spend a lot of time researching. Let me know if this answers your question!Stoika7Or... maybe you mean how do you deliver descriptions of places by the literary sense? That's pretty much subjective matter and depends on your personal style, so it's much harder to answer your question. I usually don't give long detailed descriptions of places, I focus more on atmosphere, action, and emotional state, I think one has to be very skilled to give long descriptions of places without resulting boring, and sometimes in doing so I have the feeling that you take off "imagination" from the reader, but again it depends on many personal elements of your writing style...But there can be many ways of adding details without resulting boring, for instance adding elements of the place during the action or mixed in the development of an event, mentioning place details that are significant/make sense in a specific moment of the scene/action, or even mixed with emotions/thoughts... Mainly, first thing, always, is envisioning the place clearly in your mind, during the writing, imagine yourself being right there, let it "appear" in the writing in a spontaneous way :-)SpringtimeflowerThank you so much Stoika!Your 2nd post is where I was going with my question, but your first post has inspired me. I tried doing what you just said about putting yourself there.Lots of good info. Let me know how you're doing with that and if you need more help! Best wishes :-))RandallBump!RandallBump!RandallBump!SpringtimeflowerHi Stoika!Thank you. Sorry for the delay in responding, but needed to give more thought to it to decide how much imagination versus the actual or real structures or landscaping...maybe I get carried away. I'll keep you posted. Just trying to clear away stuff in anticipation for my mom's return home and taking small breaks. I'm thinking about putting myself in thought inside the story like a spectator... and the descriptive side using buildings that exist where I live... part of the story is much further south of where I currently live and the rest somewhere else, so the scenes may not be like what you do for descriptions, but that is a great idea and I can see how it has helped you with the books you have published.
