astrofan | this may sound strange but what can substitute onion? most recipes I read contains onion. let's say I don't have onion, what can substitute it? I have tried garlic and spring onion, and the taste is quite different. has anyone tried replacing onion with something else and it worked? what recipe is that?

Scallot is either labelled green onions or spring onions at the store. I will try chives

Faith | Shallots are different from scallions/green onions. Shallots look like big, pink garlic bulbs. They'd be a decent substitute for onions, depending on how exacting you are. |
Randall | Yep, shallots are much milder (for people with stomach problems). |
astrofan | lol I wrote scallots I meant Scallions yes I've tried shallots before

Randall | Scallions are great in soup recipes to replace onions. |
PlutoSurvivor | My neighbors are prolific Gardners with an allergy to onions and they grow tons of garlic to use in its place. The taste is different but it works. You cannot use a garlic press. That makes it bitter. Mincing it finely or slivering it is better. If you are using it just for flavoring, pierce it with a knife several times and use it whole. And never use garlic powder. Yikes! |
