PlutoSurvivor | How about "Toad in a Hole?" This is when you coat a slice of bread with butter, toast it in a pan, then cut a circle out of the middle, crack an egg into the hole, cover it with a lid and cook it so that it is still soft inside, then serve it with the circle of toast that was cut out so that it is positioned over top like a cap. Voila. Toad in the Hole dippy egg. Much more fun calling it that. I know I would eat it if it had a cute name. Does your family have any fun meal names? How about any strange menu item names you may have come across over the years? Did they taste yummier when they were called by a cute or unusual name? |
PlutoSurvivor | Of course we all know about Green Eggs and Ham. My version was a spinach omelet with bacon, the natural way - no food coloring ever. |
PlutoSurvivor | I found out there is an English dish named "toad-in-the-hole," consisting of sausages partially submerged in Yorkshire pudding resemble peeking amphibians. I guess the egg dish is a cross-cultural adaption. |
PlutoSurvivor | I just found out this one, too: "Hush puppies", or deep-fried cornbread batter, were used either by fisherman, Civil War soldiers, or runaway slaves to quiet barking dogs. |
PlutoSurvivor | Came across this 2008 blog post. Very enjoyable read. http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/explainer/2008/06/whats_up_with_chinese_menus.html First paragraph... "In preparation for this summer's Olympic Games, the Chinese government has recommended new English translations for more than 2,000 traditional Chinese dishes to appeal to Western tourists. The menu items in question include "bean curd made by a pockmarked woman," "ants climbing a tree," and "chicken without sexual life." Where did these unusual names come from?" |
dadoo | Stargazy pie is a weird name, but nowhere near as weird as the dish itself...
|
Randall | Are those fish heads? |
Randall | Hush puppies are a southern staple around here and go with fish and chips (fries). |
