jenny415 | How do I begin to interpret cards when I get my deck? It seems like you guys all know things about the situation that the cards couldn't have possibly told you. Is this something you practice? How can I practice this? Does it start with a basic understanding of each card and then calling upon your spirit guides to help you intuit certain questions? |
littlecloud | I don't use spirit guides, not knowingly at least. For each deck I got I would look at each card individually first, sometimes taking notes on what I felt looking at each card. Then I went back and read the individual meanings or storyline for each one. After that comes practice and you can see cards pop up for similar situations. At some point you may go back an re-evaluate the meanings you originally assigned. You may also want to decide on whether or not to use reversals. |
Jessica2407 | Tarot card extraordinaire LOL it's funny!! Thank you haha What you can start off doing is keep a tarot journal. You could start off with a daily one card pull at the end of your day. You could do that for one month or so, write your interp of how your day went and see if you can relate to the card. Some decks are more emotional, they'll likely pick things that related to you emotionally on that day whereas some decks are more in your face kinda thing, they are blunt and straight to the point. Slowly you'll get to know your cards. Then you could pull cards for the weeks to come and see how it goes, the more you feel connected with your cards the more you'll understand the variations. Hope it helps. |
andstuff | jenny, in the first place be careful about listening to the advice of people whose competence you're unsure of amateurs are the first ones to call themselves knowledgeable and lavish their non-existent knowledge on others, be warned these days even people calling themselves pros are massive self-deluding flops less often than would be preferable the above does not by any means apply to @littlecloud @Twirl Your best friends are Waite's "The pictorial guide to Tarot" and some chapters in some books by Eliphas Levi one being the "Key to great mysteries" (cool chapters on Majors, quabalah numerology etc.) My other all time favourite is the so called "Book T" that summarises Golden Dawn knowledge and contains precious info on the Minors Crowley's "Book of Thoth" is valuable inasmuch as a lot of it is reputed to be pinched from the Order of The Golden Dawn too, so if one manages to separate the crazy produce of his unhealthy brain from what he borrowed, some gems in there too The "Pictorial guide" is the best though at the outset, very well-written and easy to read, you can download it here http://www.hermetics.org/pdf/Waite_Tarot.pdf PS also yeah, angels and whatnot. i rely on my body to read energies, they start flowing in. i also say a prayer to ask all things evil not to stand by my side, having had some bad experience. |
poochycat | Hi Jenny, I just started out reading the Tarot as well. I bought the Gilded tarot deck and find it quite easy to interpret just by looking at the cards. But I agree with Twirl (I think it was her) who said to keep a journal and pull one card at the end of the day and try to relate any circumstances to it. Also memory retention shoots up to 90% just by saying the meaning of the card outloud rather than just reading it to yourself which is just 10% retention. Hope that helps a little. |
Randall | I would appreciate it if you could stop taking jabs like that at Jessica, andstuff. It is unbecoming of a Mod. Thank you. |
littlecloud | I want to add that I really do think it's a rather personal path. I'm no expert by any means, only been reading for about 2 years but I chose my decks because they each spoke to me in a unique way. I never liked the Rider Waite, not sure way, maybe because it's a 'standard' deck, or that I just prefer different imagery. For me it's made me a better reader simply because I have that connection to my decks and I continue to learn from them and from other people on here. |

I made a general observation. Did Jessica rush to tell on me or something (cringeworthy if anything)? How is it my problem that she decided I wrote this with her in mind ? I don't make comments on her person at all. I don't think it's fair or becoming to make accusations that are ungrounded. And it is frustrating too, to be thought of as some uncivilised badly brought up god knows who. I haven't deserved that either. Was just my opinion. We all know amateurs are perilous. It's not down to me to call anyone an amateur and I didn't. |
Randall | No, Jessica didn't say anything to me. |
andstuff | you told me to ignore her and i do because i am afraid of her and of being harassed by her again, why would I be looking for trouble? i think i mentioned being harassed and insulted makes me physically unwell. i also said I don't enjoy physical pain. plus i never read any of her threads in which she offered readings as i felt there was unlikely to be anything of interest, therefore i cannot sport any knowledge re: her level of skill or anything please do the maths now i'd rather not even say that unless I say "Jessica is this and that" no comment I make can be read as a jab on that adorable woman |
Jessica2407 | Moderator's Note Jenny dear, am going to close this thread for the time being, awaiting Randall's probable response to the latest input made in this thread after which I have indeed, for the first time contacted him. My apologies for the way this thread has been derailed. You could open another thread if you wish and am sure many of us including me, will gladly answer and help you, however I hope you got some sort of answer to your initial query. Cheers Supplement to the above post I hope Andstuff who seem to have trouble ignoring me on this forum has finally gotten the message loud and clear |
Jessica2407 | Back in business |
Randall | Jessica, I also expect you to ignore her, and that comment is not ignoring. |

Oh, I will. After that comment. |
jenny415 | Hey guys! Didn't ,mean to start anything on here! :/ Thank you for your advice, it is really appreciated! Today, I bought my first deck:the beginner's guide to tarot by juliet shaman burke. I am very excited to to start reading up on everything and try the pulling a card a day, etc. practice. I am not quite clear on how to do reversals but I know some people actually cut it half reversals half normmal and then shuffle but then others just shuffle normally and if the card is reversed than it is reversed. I think for now I will maybe not focus on that so much? I will keep you ll updated! |

Hey Jenny Enjoy your deck! I would leave the reversals out until you know the meanings of the upright cards. Otherwise it may get hugely overwhelming. Starting learning the basics of the major arcana cards first, might also be helpful to get an understanding of the cards & how the cards relate to each other. For the reversals (if you want to use them straight away) you can put the cards in front of you and mix them until it feels right. So you don't choose which cards will be RX. I let mine turn while shuffling. It happens automatically. Have fun with your deck! |
Jessica2407 | Hey Jenny! That's great Hope you enjoy the experience of getting to know your new decks Yeah what Twirl said. I don't use reversals either, they do become overwhelming. |
jenny415 | Thanks for all the input! I won't be using reversals right now because I want to focus more on understanding the cards on their own. Maybe in a few months or sooner i will be giving readings on the site!!! |
