A LUNAR ECLIPSE occurs on February 20th, ushering in a six-month period of new keys for understanding the future and achieving success. While it affects us all, it especially marks a potent new beginning for those born with a natal planet within one degree (plus or minus) of 1 degree Virgo or Pisces. To discover the degrees of your natal planets, click here and your natal chart will be calculated for you free of charge.

FEBRUARY 20, 2008 – 1 degree VIRGO:

This Lunar Eclipse stirs memories deep in your subconscious and gives you a chance to heal old patterns of being victimized due to lack of paying attention to the details of what is going on.

This can apply to a relationship, in which you are unaware of the other person’s true motives, and thus get taken advantage of. It may also be that in a business dealing you didn’t read the ‘fine print’ and thus had to pay disproportionate compensation due to your naivety.

The idea is that if there is an area of your life in which you are being so sensitive to not wanting to hurt another that you end up getting hurt. That behavior patter will surface so you have a chance to heal it once and for all.

To use the energy of this Lunar Eclipse to your advantage, pay more attention to the physicality of what is going on. Go out of your way to look at the details and you will be able to put things in proper perspective.

This month’s Eclipses are part of the 10 North series, or “family” of Eclipses. In this series, “there is a very strong emphasis on communication and, at the same time, frustrating or inhibiting events may come into [our lives] via news, paperwork, or a young person. The person may feel tired and drained, and this is therefore a good time to take things quietly and work through the difficulties one at a time.” (Bernadette Brady)

Because so many planets are in the early degrees of their signs this month, the “Moon is void of course (Moon Void of Course):/astrology-tutorials/moon-void-of-course for unusually long periods of time. See the Universal Lunar Calendar for the specifics.

The Lunar Eclipse Wednesday evening in Virgo highlights matters of health, time management, and constructive vs. destructive criticism. Virgo worries so much that its energy can become blocked up, constricted (especially with Saturn also in Virgo right now). So take some time on Wednesday to tune into those worried parts, those parts that feel like they need some love and encouragement to loosen up and connect to the Universal flow (Pisces). Full Moons encourage us to balance our energies, and a Lunar Eclipse is an especially powerful Full Moon.

February 20, a total Lunar Eclipse, an extremely powerful Full Moon, peaks at 7:31 PM PST at 1º50’ Virgo-Pisces. Integrating matter and spirit, head and heart, judgment and forgiveness–the Virgo-Pisces axis–encodes the fundamental challenge of our time. We are approaching the end of the Age of Pisces, the close of an era, a changing of the archetypal guard. The astrological Great Ages, a 26,000-year cycle determined by the precession of the equinoxes, provide templates for human consciousness. For most of Western civilization, the primary archetype of the Age of Pisces has been that of sin and redemption, exemplified in the myth of the Fall from the Garden of Eden. Whether or not we were raised in a Judeo-Christian faith, there is a belief deeply buried in the modern collective unconscious that we are inherently flawed and that Heaven/God are somewhere other than here on Earth. The belief in “original sin” has also led to the demonization and degradation of the feminine, the body, and the Earth itself.

Virgo is an earth sign, represented by the Virgin. The Virgin represents the divine feminine and the birthing of Christ/Spirit into matter. The word matter stems from the same cognate as mother (Indo-European mater). Virgo’s glyph derives from the letters M and V, Maria Virgo, the Virgin Mary, a vestige of the pre-Christian Goddess. The Virgo–Pisces polarity symbolizes the integration of body and soul–that matter is spirit incarnate. This eclipse invites us to remember the truth: We are not sinners, we are not separate, we are not guilty, we are not a mistake. We are spirit in form, love made flesh, eternity playing in time and space.

Eclipses occur in 19-year cycles. On February 20, 1989, there was a lunar eclipse at 1°59’ Virgo–Pisces. What was important back then? What is essential now? At this eclipse, Saturn at 5°25’ Virgo conjoins the Moon and forms a waxing opposition to the Sun (exact February 24), highlighting any fears and beliefs blocking our path. Saturn moves retrograde until May 2, then stations direct at 1°41’ Virgo, within 12 minutes of arc of this eclipse. Because all eclipse degrees remain sensitive for at least three months afterward, planets transiting that degree act as trigger, nudging us to keep moving forward. If possible, watch and meditate around the peak of the eclipse, 7:30 PM PST, or while it is in progress (the Moon enters the penumbra @ 4:30 PM and leaves @10:15 PM PST.

This eclipse starkly illuminates the shadow side of both signs as well as their evolutionary goals. The shadow side of Pisces slips into helplessness, victimization, or martyrdom. The shadow side of Virgo falls into worthlessness, shame, and blame. The ongoing Mars-Pluto opposition, which began last fall on September 21 and peaks in two and a half weeks on March 7, tests us to reclaim our projections and our power. Many of us are clearing core issues from childhood, which are challenging us to not act out old patterns, but to heal ourselves and embody our spiritual destiny. We are also healing the traumatic memories from the painful transition from matriarchy to patriarchy, where we separated from The Great Mother, from our connection with matter, spirit, and the inherent divinity of all things.

To heal means to make whole, to integrate whatever was split off. As we move from duality and separation into the paradigm of the heart, into unity and wholeness, we must recover whatever has been repressed and disowned. When you find yourself in fear or anger, take some deep breaths, connect your higher self, and use the tools that bring you to truth, love, and healing. The Eclipse of the Moon ~

The eclipse of the Moon has traditionally been viewed as a bad omen, for it can awaken irrational responses. Since the Moon governs domestic matters, the public and the emotional personality, rather than leadership, it tends to have a more personal effect than the solar eclipse, which plays a more outward, even political, role.

As a rule, women and family are generally more affected by the lunar cycle, whereas men and politics are signified by the solar. This is not to say that women are not political animals, nor that men are distinct from the family, but that the private, nurturing side is more affected than the public, social and media driven arena, which even in the 21st Century is still primarily dominated by males, or at least by what might be described as masculine energies.

The first lunar eclipse of the year is a total eclipse in Virgo, at 3:27 hrs UT on Feb 21, 2008 (Feb 20 in the Americas). From start to finish, it lasts about three hours and twenty-six minutes (not including the penumbral phases which are very difficult to see). The partial eclipse begins as the Moon's eastern edge slowly moves into the Earth's umbral shadow. During the partial phases, it takes just over an hour for the Moon's orbital motion to carry it entirely within the Earth's dark umbra.

Vivid Red... or Orange?

The colour and brightness of the totally-eclipsed Moon can vary considerably from one eclipse to another. Dark eclipses are caused by volcanic gas and dust, which filters and blocks much of the Sun's light from reaching the Moon. But since no major volcanic eruptions have taken place recently, the Moon will probably take on a vivid red or orange colour during the total phase. After the total phase ends, it is once again followed by a partial eclipse, as the Moon gradually leaves the umbral shadow.

The total phase of a lunar eclipse is called totality. At this time, the Moon is completely immersed within the Earth's dark, umbral shadow. Totality will last just under 50 minutes. This is quite a bit less than the last total lunar eclipse on August 28, 2007, which lasted 90 minutes.

The eclipse occurs at 1°53' Virgo, in conjunction with the Fixed Star Megrez in the constellation of Ursa Major, the Great Bear. This star is a star of Mars, so is passionate and driven. It symbolises spiritual sight; creativity and violence. It is also known as Atri, who was one of the seven Rishis (Hindu sages), the ruling star of the Great Bear, Ursa Major. The Great Bear gives a quiet, prudent, suspicious, mistrustful, self-controlled, patient nature, but an uneasy spirit and great anger when roused.. By the Kabalists it is associated with the Hebrew letter Zain and the 7th Tarot Trump, "The Chariot". The energies of the Chariot give great impetus in one's direction and also tend to reduce any surrounding negative effects.

Since different parts of the Moon will be covered by different portions of Earth's shadow, quite a variation in brightness and in colour can be expected. Consequently the southern half of the totally eclipsed Moon will appear considerably brighter than the northern half.

The eclipse is well-placed for North and South America as well as Western Europe and North-West Africa.
Observers along North America's west coast miss the early stages of the partial eclipse, because it begins before moonrise.
Alaskans in Anchorage and Fairbanks experience moonrise during totality, but bright evening twilight will make it difficult for sourdoughs to view the event.
At the instant of mid-totality (03:37 UT), the Moon will lie in the zenith for observers in French Guiana, and places in the eastern Caribbean.
Western Europe and northwest Africa also see the entire eclipse.
Further to the east (east Africa and central Asia), the Moon sets before the eclipse ends.
None of the eclipse is visible from eastern Asia, Australia or New Zealand.

A Critical Event ~

The Moon is eclipsed in Virgo, so people at this time will feel quite reserved, eschewing flattery or emotional display. Selfishness, narrow-mindedness, trouble in employment, or with employees are likely. Passion is overcome by intellect and people are likely to be extremely critical and picky, both of themselves and others, especially their partners. The military is likely to be very edgy and inclined to take the lead, particularly if there is political disagreement, which is indicated by current aspects. Mars is the fierce, passionate warrior and transiting Mars, notably, is conjunct Polaris and more ominously Betelgeuse in the constellation of Orion, suggesting war, carnage and general damage due to misunderstanding and undue edginess. Remember, the Moon in the eclipse is conjunct Megrez, a star of Mars.

The Moon however is eclipsed in fortunate trine to Pluto, the dark lord of transformation. This reduces the negative effects and suggests that the long term outcome may be beneficial, or at least more beneficial than might otherwise be the case, especially for the younger generation. Note that obstructive Pluto in GWB's chart is conjunct the Ascendant (self-image) of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Pluto in Iran's chart is conjunct GWB's Moon (the public; homeland security) and his Jupiter (politics; religion; the law), so it is sure to stir some trouble. Nevertheless, the eclipse in Iran will not be fully visible, unlike in the US, reducing its impact. War birds will hopefully remain hovering, rather than diving into action, though diplomacy will surely be put to the test.

Health issues are likely to be in the news. Saturn, lord of Karma, and the bright Royal Star, Regulus, are only three degrees (three fingers' width) east and west, respectively, of the Moon. Regulus, a star of Mars combined with Jupiter, is the most Royal Star. Known as Raphael, the Healing Archangel, healing is thus restated as an issue. This star was anciently the Watcher of the North, noted for his nobility, ambition, alertness, great power, status and leadership, but associated with sudden downfall, accidents and violence. Snce Regulus is in the last degree of tropical Leo, this diminishes his power somewhat, being out-of-sign in this figure, but if the US decides to take its threatened action against Iran, this would be a likely trigger.

Saturn is retrograde in Virgo, conjunct the eclipsed Moon – and the Saturn of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Iran is therefore undergoing its Saturn Return conjunct GWB's natal Mars! Transiting Uranus (sudden catastrophes; unexpected events; technological upsets) is tightly conjunct Iran's south lunar node (sorrow; loss; inevitable karmic events). On this day, transiting Mars is conjunct Iran's Mars, so headstrong, warlike feelings will rule, especially since the solar eclipse on Feb. 7 fell in Iran's nodal degree in its seventh house of open enemies.

This is a definite warning for hostilities, but also showing at a more personal level that relationships and family life will be liable to restrictive feelings – feelings of aridity and sorrow. Saturn opposes the Sun in Pisces, increasing responsibilities and drudgery. The Sun in the eclipse is conjunct the Royal Star Fomalhaut, so the temptation will be to resort to alcohol, or drugs. Fomalhaut is the Archangel Gabriel, the Watcher of the South. You need to watch your associates. It may seem as though you are taking one step forward and eight steps back. Forget about receiving any show of thanks or gratitude. Nit-pickers and those in charge seem to take it for granted that you will have what they need and are fully prepared to execute their demands. Sloppy work or irresponsibility you exhibit under this influence will not only be unacceptable now, but may work against you in the future. Do not seek favours, or promotion – and don't count on luck. It is a transitional energy. Issues will come to a head at the Solar Eclipse on August 1st.

People with mutable signs prominent in their charts will have a hard time separating their egos from their emotions, failing to recognise that something (or someone) they want may simply represent ego involvement, instead of emotional commitment. The mutable signs are Virgo; Pisces; Gemini; and Sagittarius. What we are called upon (or driven) to do may often interfere with what gives us emotional satisfaction, or we chase after our desires, while we waste or fail to develop our talents and skills. A tug-of-war exists between desires and emotional needs and practical ambitions. Appreciate whatever positive circumstances you encounter, and don’t be misguided enough to believe you can easily overcome any negative ones.

I send the deepest, heartfelt gratitude and love to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, my first teacher and maha guru. You who would settle for no less than world peace have inspired me throughout my life to dedicate all my work to the enlightenment of all beings.
The whole universe is vibrating as your blissful, unbounded self
merges with unmanifested pure consciousness.

This is the Full Moon of healing and service. Virgo understands that disease manifests itself in societies as well as in individuals. There is so much dis-ease in our world and we all need to awaken to our role as healers. This is especially true on this Full Moon in Virgo, with a total lunar eclipse. The soulful, peacemaking Pisces Sun opposes the scientific, nature-based healing Virgo Moon. What a perfect night to release your New Moon in Aquarius intentions for radical change (especially if they revolve around health issues) and celebrate the hard work you have done over the last two weeks toward these goals.

The first lunar eclipse of 2008 is perfectly placed for observers throughout most of the Americas as well as Western Europe. The entire event is visible from South America and most of North America. Western Europe and northwest Africa also see the entire eclipse. Go to NASA’s Eclipse page for more information http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/OH/OH2008.html#2008Feb07A

Eclipses co-mingle the energies of Moon and Sun, often creating disturbing or intensified effects. The Pisces Sun rules a spectrum of experience ranging from pure transcendence, selflessness, unconditional love, to addiction, co-dependency, denial and fantasy. These energies literally cover and hide the energy of the practical, analytical Virgo Moon; veiling this Moon’s clarity and grounded reality-based thinking.

On this Full Moon, the Sun in Pisces opposes the Moon/Saturn conjunction in Virgo. This opposition enlivens the integration of healing through transcendence and attending to bodily health. But it may also bring up more negative feelings of inertia/limitation due to the perfectionism of Virgo and the negations/denials of Pisces.

This year the Moon and Sun are joined respectively by the South Node in Leo and North Node in Aquarius. Along with Pluto in Capricorn (transformation through concrete action) and Mars in Gemini (swift diversified actions) these planets create a powerful mystic rectangle. This configuration requires us to walk the path of mindful inquiry, in a fully-embodied yet open-minded way, in order to realize our unbounded potential. The Venus/Mercury (heart/mind) conjunction and Chiron/Neptune (transcendent healing) in Aquarius provides the fuel for the mind to awaken to Buddha nature. On the other hand, if your agenda is wasting time partying with drugs and alcohol, Saturn in Virgo and Pluto/Jupiter in Capricorn will bring you right back to reality by showing you the true harmful and useless nature of substances.

So let’s talk a bit about Virgo, which most people consider perfectionistic, critical, analytical, organized, discriminating, scientific, empirical, and calculating. In truth, we all express our Virgo side when we strive to be our best. Virgo is the healer, the doctor, the nurse, the teacher, the therapist, the worker, the researcher, the scientist, and the engineer. Virgo is the true healer of the zodiac because in its mind, if it causes pain, it warrants attention and a cure. For Virgo, caring comes in the form of finding workable solutions to everyday problems.

Your partnerships may be tested, but there is nothing to worry if the bond is strong enough. It's time to strike a balance between your own needs and need of your marriage partner, business associate or an adversary.
