i dont understand how jupiter can be exalted in cancer. they are so different in their traits. infac quit opposite.

jupiter is careless, cancer careful
jupiter is a traveller, cancer a home lover
jupiter is fire, cancer water
jupiter likes spending, cancer saving
jupiter likes to get lost, cancer would cry if lost!
jupiter is not sentimental, cancer is.
jupiter is fast, cancer slow
jupiter is selfless, cancer (with no offence to them) selfish as we know
jupiter
jupiter wants to get away from family, cancer cant think of a life without family.
jupiter laughs, cancer cries! (symbolically speaking )

so how in this sola system is jupiter exalted in cancer!!??

You made an interesting point there...as a person who has Jupiter in Cancer, now I am curious

------------------
Sun in Libra
Moon in Cancer
Jupiter in Cancer
Venus in Virgo
Mars in Cancer
Ascendant in Cancer

I can't see why looking after your home and family is selfish. Quite often it's the opposite - a sacrifice of personal ambition.

Jupiter is the expansive planet. That seems to suit the emotional nature of Cancer, a water sign ruled by the Moon. Water is expansive on our planet, it covers a lot of it, and the tidal parts are controlled by the Moon.

Some interesting ideas on here:

http://www.guidingstar.com/JupiterInCancer.html

Jupiter is exalted in Cancer since Jupiter makes Cancer see the larger context and break out of their parochial limitations. Since Jupiter stays in a sign for a year and, therefore, circles the zodiac in 12 years, we can look back to the years when Jupiter was in Cancer to see the patterns.

As we would expect, these periods were good for women's rights -- Jupiter expands the role of women in the society. Everything from Mother's Day to the first woman in the U.S. Senate happened with Jupiter in Cancer.

During these years people cared (Cancer) more (Jupiter) for others. People often broke out of some prejudice or expanded their awareness. Of course, people tend to be more emotional, more interested in home and family. Jupiter in Cancer is the common thought, "my children will be better off than I am".

"can't see why looking after your home and family is selfish"

me neither. how do u make that out from my post?

"Water is expansive on our planet, it covers a lot of it, and the tidal parts are controlled by the Moon."

there has got to be a much more direct reason for this for astrologers to claim jupiter to be exalted in cancer.

for example...moon is exalted in taurus because moon (the mind) finds emotional stability (taurus) when in taurus.

mars is exalted in capricorn because the raw energy or mars gets a solid capricorn structure to work on.

sun is exalted in aries cause aries is aggressive and sun has abundunt energy to fuel the aggression.

and so on...

Well, you did say Cancers were both selfish and couldn't think of life without their family. Oh, and cry rather than get out the A-Z.

The answer according to:
http://www.astronor.com/exaltations.htm

is that Aries is exalted in the Sun as it is the first point of the zodiac and the Sun is the principle amongst the planets. the other superior planets were assigned to the other cardinal points:

Mars -> Capricorn
Jupiter -> Cancer
Saturn -> Libra

Some interesting points on Jupiter. Similarly, Mars is debilitated in Cancer. But, they are quite intense in Sexual life ;-)...

I can understand why Saturn is exalted Libra (structure and beauty are interrelated), I can understand why Mars is exalted in Capricorn (Cap gives stamina and consistency to mars but in cancer it would be quite wimpy and cancer is ruled by moon (feminine) so the masculine aspect of mars wouldn't work with it).

As for jupiter, I've thought about it and the only thing that I can think of is that cancer is a water sign which gives it the viscerality. Jupiter is concerned with principles of philosophy and the philosphy of religion/theology. Because cancer is associated with the house, both religion and the house are traditional institutions in the community and somehow are associated with each other. I hope this makes sense, I can't seem to explain it too well.

Perhaps we should just throw out these descriptions (Exaltation, Detriment, and Fall).

Oh no, I think detriments, falls etc are important. Having problems grasping something like this is our fault, not astrology's.

Well, Jupiter expands whatever it touches, right? So Jupiter in Cancer would just expand the qualities of Cancer. My guess is that it would make someone very caring, traditional and loyal.

It just exaggerates the qualities of Cancer. That's my take on it anyway. I could be way off.

and me, the eternal feminist, also thinks perhaps there is an element of the feminine at play here.. maternal qualities which are largely disregarded and considered "weak" by culture at large, that are actually quite important, in terms of bridging communities, raising families, sending children into the world, etc. jupiter being the first interpersonal planet; cancer being the mothering energy. the goddess, peganism, etc. interdependent communal living, spiraling (as opposed to linear/masculine) energy.. ever outward.. expanding..

Interesting comments ~ it's made me think ~ I don't know about anybody else, but I learned to read in the 4th house not the 3rd or the 9th. My mother taught me before I went to school. Religious instruction often starts in the home, that ties in with Jupiter as well.

The exaltation is traditional and might not fit as well as we would like, but I agree with Heartcakes, it is annoying when feminine qualities are considered weak.

p.s

Was this "Escape from Sobibor"? The camp was liberated by a Russian soldier, first in Russian, second in Yiddish. It sounded old-fashioned, like he had learnt it off his grandmother.

There's plenty of historical examples of religion being kept alive and practised secretly in the home ~ Jewish people during the Spanish Inquisition, and here in England I don't have to go many miles to find a house with priest holes in from times when the Catholic religion had to be practised secretly in the home.

I was also thinking that both Cancer and jupiter deal with personal stuff. To expand on the home and jovial things - Jupiter also deals with travel, philosophy, teaching-learning etc. These are highly personal and to some extent private things that cant be shared with others; a person's travel experience is going to be very different to another person's despite being on the same trip, it also changes people too. Likewise learning-teaching are a highly individual and are life affecting events. Furthermore, the teacher-student relationship, the teacher (Jupiter/sag) specifically in this case, acts like a mother (moon/cancer) and provides us nourishment in a philosophical/journeying sense.

In terms of cancer and the home, again, homelife is a very private thing and is only shared with a few, that is, other family members and some close friends.

So in that sense, home is highly private and where life starts (our starting point) and maybe jupiter adds as well as takes us from there (a continuation from cancer's point).

What about the fact that Jupiter ruled Pisces and Sagittarius before Neptune was discovered. I think I read somewhere that there are esoteric connections with Pisces Neptune and the Moon.

Well the pisces/nep and sag/jup thing is quite easy to understand. Pisces is spirituality and almost religion in practice, Jupiter is theology behind it and religion in theory.

As for moon and neptune, both are rulers of water signs, there's some affinity in that. Moon is the nurturer (and in effect self-sacrifice), neptune is self-sacrifice and compassion.
