I've been having a disastrous time with applying to colleges and figuring out what I want to do for my future. I'm miserable and very unsure about it and have no idea why this process has been so agonizingly difficult for me. I've had little help with it, don't know what to get prepared, feel awkward about contacting the old teachers at my old school that I moved from for rec letters, and don't really feel confident in my college choices... or if college is good for me in this time in my life. I really need tarot help.

Why is the college application process so grueling and how can I muster up the courage to apply?

Will I manage to get into a good school? Will it somehow work out or am I destined to be a failure?

I'm really, really upset by this... can't stop crying/worrying on and off today so if anyone has any advice for what they pulled I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.

Hi Sweet-Scorpion,

I understand your point of view! I was there about a year and a half ago--I applied to 12 graduate programs in about 3 years and got accepted to one in 2007 and couldn't find a place to live in DC, before finally being accepted to a school in DC in 2011. It took a lot of endurance and persistence.

Don't hesitate to contact professors--they WANT to help you! It's all a part of good intent and karma. Is there a professor you really connected with once before? Perhaps you should step back and examine WHY you want to return to school in the first place. When you find that motivation and reasoning, completing the rest of the steps will seem easier or fall into place--but you have to have that inner conviction.

Oh--and you are NOT destined to be a failure!

Here's the cards I pulled:

The Emperor: This card represents tradition and firm foundations--in addition to a father figure. Is there a paternal figure who is pushing you to return to school? Or someone for which education has meant a lot and who expects you to go? Also, this also can point to being in control of your emotions--perhaps you have tried to focus on this college applications but....

The Page of Swords shows that there is some angst going on! the Page here shows that a message of mental swiftness and clarity is needed at the moment. Its asking you to mentally examine the problems behind your emotions and approach the situation of returning to school rationally in order to get to the heart of the matter. This could be a concrete plan listing the pros and cons of going to college for example.

The King of Pentacles shows that success and a positive direction and movement can be yours once you sort out your feelings (or deal with expectations for a parent--or even yourself) and really narrow down your focus. The knight of pentacles shows the promise of maturity in the future about the subject (which is different from the youthful perception of the page). I think this process will help you grow! With hard work of the knight, anything is possible!

Good luck with everything!

Thank you for reaching out to me I really appreciate it, and your reassurance. I'm sorry we've both had such a hard time with school. I really have had a hard time since middle school and my education has felt like a living nightmare because of all the hurdles I had to get through the whole time to succeed.

The Emperor is definitely my grandmother, and a few other family members, who see me as very competent and intelligent and therefore are pushing me to succeed. I think they might see this card in me, because I really do have a high intellect but as you said, the Page of Swords is begging for me to cut away all the emotional confusion beyond it to get back into control. Interestingly enough the PofS is sometimes my personal card because I'm gifted intellectually so I think this is a hopeful sign. And on the bright side, this morning I finally used that power of the PofS and made myself do college research, and I feel way less emotional now that I made lists and started online accounts at places like college prowler.com.

I think I was just having an emotional moment but I'll try to use my mental power to avoid another one in the future.

The King of Pents is a good sign too. I think that this would make a lot of sense showing my success if I force myself to go to college. Maybe this card is what can convince me that I'll receive benefits from going. At one time recently I saw not many benefits to going but maybe I'll actually be able to make money in my career if I go.

Thanks again!
