I got the message of a story in the sense that you have to build up to it. almost as if you were dropping hints but telling stories of your time together what it meant to you how you feel after you talk to him or see him.

... basically sweet little anecdotes so he too can be built up to the same feeling thinking that you're at and then you can say....(if he is also responding back to your positive messages with positive messages if not then simply don't ask him any further)

.... so you can say something like I wonder if we paired together how great our experiences or thoughts or feelings or emotions would be
..... and then from there he should be able to be like yeah you know what we would make a great couple he should be able to lead it at this point. if he's not doing that then I don't think he wants to be a couple.
