Hi!I recommend reading Arthur Edward Waite's "Pictorial Guide to Tarot", it covers basic card meanings, at first might be good to have it handy somewhere. The PDF can be found online quite easily if you google. Waite was also the man who created one of the first commercially available divinatory decks known as the Rider-Waite-Smith (Rider is the publisher, Waite the art director, Smith the illustrator) Most divinatory decks available today are Rider-based, the art may differ, but the symbolic elements are pretty much the same. So if you feel that the classical RWS is not quite up your street, you can look up Robin Wood which is very much the same in terms of symbolism. Other decks like Dreaming Way, Joie de Vivre etc. also retain most of the RWS pictorial code if you feel you connect with the art better. What I would not recommend is decks like Marseille and Visconti, because these were originally playing cards and were not adapted for divinatory purposes. Guess that's it. Good luck this is the deck database btw http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/ If you fancy Crowley's deck (aka Thoth), feel free to ask me questions, I don't own it, but I own the one Crowley pinched his from, so I know this pictorial code as well. Actually I wouldn't learn the meanings until you develop your own for the cards. I think it's hard to detach from the regular and textbook meaning of the cards once you've ingrained what they mean. There's a lot of facets to Tarot that it's better to start with just one. There's meanings of colors, numbers, symbols; look at how many people are in each card? What are they doing? And what does it say to you personally? Keep a journal or take notes some way. The best practice is to just get out there and read for others over and over again and you'll start noticing how sometimes a new idea pops in your mind about the same combination of cards, etc. IP: Logged |
