In the lecture series Life Between Death and Rebirth I found a quote that expresses an important point for contemplation when we no longer have a spiritual teacher. We have come of age I think, and we can take full responsibility for teaching ourselves so we become contributors to the revealing of truth.

“…. is that in the universal pattern it is of no importance whether something happens through us or through another person. This should not deter us from doing everything that has to be done. It should not prevent us from performing our duty, but it should keep us from hurrying to and fro. How glad every individual feels that he is capable, that he can do it. A certain resignation is necessary for us to feel equally glad when someone else can and does do something. One should not love something because one has done it oneself, but love it because it is in the world irrespective of whether he or someone else has done it. If we repeatedly ponder this thought it will lead most certainly to selflessness. Such moods of soul are essential to enter into the spiritual world, not only as an investigator but also to understand what has been discovered.” http://wn.rsarchive.org/Lectures/LifeBetween/19121103p01.html

So we each contribute in our own way to the whole process of the evolution of consciousness. One does not do a thing for the other person, nor should the other person look towards someone else with gratitude for what they give, we each should be deeply grateful for our own ability to grasp and internalise spiritual truth no matter where we find it.

Nice thoughts. It's freeing once you start to learn more through the experiences life brings to you, rather than try to adhere to another man's teachings or truth.

Indeed.

I know Steiners paragraph wasn't totally about spiritual teachers it just reminded me of the ways we come into our own.

True, but it's not a big stretch.

Steiner is hard to grasp for newbies.

Yes extremely. Occult Science is probably not a good one to start with, but his lectures are great to start with.
