Regarding Suicide I'm asked:

"Do you think it is a sin?"

My answer is probably very different than most...
[It's really much to complex to fit into this tiny little post as well...]

I will supply you, with some food for thought though:

Here's a few cases of suicide from the bible.

Although the word suicide is not used in the Bible, there are several references to people killing themselves, and that is suicide for all intent and purposes of this conversation.

Zimri, who reigned for a few days over Israel and then died in a fire that he started in his home. He was about to be overthrown and could not cope with defeat. 1 Kings 16:18

Abimelech, the son of Jerubbaal, committed assisted suicide rather than have it said that he died at the hands of a woman. Judges 9:53-54

Saul fell on his sword after losing a battle against the Philistines.

When his armor bearer saw that Saul had killed himself, he followed in like manner 1 Samuel 31:4-5; 1 Chronicles 10:4-5

When Samson stopped allowing God to direct his life, he lost his unbelievable strength and suffered humiliation at the hands of the Philistines. Unable to tolerate the ridicule and the reality of his failure, in one final act of strength, Samson pulled the pillars down on himself and thousands of his captors Judges 16:25-30

We are speaking of a physical death of the body when using the word "suicide".

I do believe we make a choice to leave our body...

Therefore all physical deaths are "suicide"

Some do it gracefully, living within the flesh for 80 - 100 years.. helping their body to deteriorate with toxins such as preservatives, smog, chemicals and the like.

While others do it subconsciously quicker, living within the flesh for 16 - 70 years.. helping their body to deteriorate with alcohol, perscription and street drugs, etc.

Still these others choose a fast route, living within the flesh for any number of various years.. leaving by illness, spontanious abortion, sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Heart attacks, Strokes, etc...

Then there are those who chose to control the situation as they see it (generally these type are making up for a feeling off loss of control)
Most notably recognized as:
-A permanent solution to a temporary problem...
Jumping or driving off a cliff, pulling the trigger to a gun at their head, by means of gasoline, exhaust fumes, carbon monoxide, and the like...

None of these really means the death of "LIFE"
All of these mean only death of "BODY"

[suicide] noun. 1. The act or an instance of intentionally killing oneself.
[oneself] pronoun. 1. one's own self, one's normal or healthy condition or state.

Now here are my questions for you:

1] Do you believe it's a sin?

2] Have you ever known someone to take their life on purpose?

Since death, I believe, is so similar to birth, my opinion is that committing suicide is just like speeding up the process of something that occurs naturally. We all just associate death and suicide with something so evil because the process involves losing someone dear to you.

Look at it this way:

Death isn't something to be percieved as demonic. It's something just as natural as birth and rebirth. If it's your time to go, it's your time to go.

So, in other words, suicide should be compared to death as a C-section would be compared to birth.

It's unnatural, but sometimes it's the best way to go without complications. (Most people commit suicide to escape the horrors of life.)

Faust: [dancing with the young witch]
A lovely dream I dreamt one day
I saw a green-leaved apple tree,
Two apples swayed upon a stem,
So tempting! I climbed up for them.

The Pretty Witch:
Ever since the days of Eden
Apples have been man's desire.
How overjoyed I am to think, sir,
Apples grow, too, in my garden.

Thank you for your well thought out response.

I'm aware that this is a uncomfortable subject for most to approach.

I admire your bravery in even responding.

I look forward to seeing some more responses, peoples thoughts and ideas...

Denise,

I didn't see a clear "yes" or "no" on your post, so I assume you don't think it is a sin, because you say that everyone commits suicide by having a physical death at somepoint in their life.

I don't feel a need to explain my answer, and I hope that no one will start a debate about my answer, because I have a right to answer your question without criticism or debate.

I DO feel that suicide is wrong. I am not going to use the word "sin" b/c I don't really use that word in my life.

Basically suicide is the taking of a life; it is no different than murdering someone else, which we all know is wrong.

I also feel that suicide is the ultimate selfish act.

That is all I am going to say about it right now. (I am starting school tomorrow so I won't have time to reply about it anymore anyways.)

Thanks for listening.
