Clueless in CrawfordManhattan: Re "W: Iraq "civil war" just yada, yada" (Aug. 8): President Bush seems to have totally tuned out the growing chaos. He'll leave our generals to worry about civil war and our troops to pay the price. He'll spend his time clearing fake tumbleweed from his fake ranch.

Nuts to Goodwin
Ridgefield, Conn.: Re Michael Goodwin's column "Win for the wackadoo wing" (Aug. 9): While I am a Republican, I am proud of the Democrats' vote against Lieberman. We may have to live with President Bush until 2008, but we don't need to do so without making noise. Who would have thought the steady state of Connecticut would be the spark? Here's to the "nuts" who began taking back our country!

Connecticut the dots
Brooklyn: It's good Saddam Hussein is out of power in Iraq, but that is the only positive outcome of a war that was based on false premises. Not only did President Bush use fear-based politics to promote his personal agenda, but his agenda isn't worth the cost in human life. America isn't safe when all our forces and tax dollars are focused on the wrong place. That's why Connecticut Democrats voted against Joe Lieberman.

Just go, Joe
Manhattan: Just like his President, Sen. Joe Lieberman has issued a "signing statement" declaring that he won't abide by the results of a democratically conducted Democratic primary. By continuing his run as an independent, he has surrendered his right to the Democratic line, the Democratic name and seniority in the Democratic Party. As in 2000, when he ran for vice president but did not give up his seat in the Senate, he is putting his own career ahead of the interests of his state, his constituents and his (former) party. Ned Lamont has been fairly declared the Democratic candidate for Senate from Connecticut. It behooves all Democrats of integrity to validate and support his candidacy. That's the very essence of two-party democracy.
