I think that when you get right down to the core beliefs people hold, liberals' and conservatives' values are not that different. What we all want is a happy world. But liberals and conservatives are constantly at each other's throats because they both think that the other group is trying to deny them their happiness. I don't know specifically how anyone could profit from this conflict, but I do think that it is stupid for people who have the same goals to be fighting each other. At the same time, I feel like very few of these goals are ever accomplished- for either the liberals or the conservatives. They are always fighting but instead of accomplishing anything, both sides end up losing.

Another way of saying this is that liberals often regard conservatives as fascists and conservatives think of liberals as... I don't know... when neither party is truly bad. I feel like both parties are victims of the "Divide and Conquer" motto.

Just some thoughts wheich were sparked by the Mobile Phones thread...

but it's not really the general public that directly affects what goes on the world- we elect officials that do this, each with varying mixtures of good intention, political stategy and personal/friendly preservation and benefit. i dont think the public really knows what politicians act with what motivations, so even though WE THE PEOPLE are all for the same thing, we fight over the politicians OBSERVABLE methods. i would think very few of the general public (bar you poli sci majors ) would know how to run society anyways, so we're not exactly forming informed opinions... and im speaking of both the conservative and liberal politicians when i say that you can bet there's always more going on than we know about...

did any ofthat make sense, it all jsut kind of came out in a jumble... maybe i'll clarify later....

Howdy, QoS!

I believe that the two-party system contributes to a frequently non-productive polarity in political thought. That plays right into your observation of how liberals and conservatives act toward each other - creating an Us vs. Them mentality that flies in the face of a We The People mentality.

It's far more creative and closer to how humans really are -- to get (at least!) a third point of view.

Queen of Sheeba I think you are right on the money. It is the same thing with many things, religion, stuff like that. People get so caught up in what divides them they don't even realize how similar they are.

There was an article on this in Utne, about how we should be finding shared goals with other people and working together towards what we want. They called it a 'Uniting Movement' or something like that. It sounds like a good idea.
