hi all -

i was just wondering what anyone things about the whole "rock the vote" thing. personally, i think it is awesome that people want to go vote, but i'm somewhat torn on it. number one it seems to be obviously partisan to me. someone on this board even mentioned in one of their posts that a rock the vote "employee" (for lack of a better word) asked them to register only if they were voting for kerry. (please forgive me if i misqouted you here - but that seemed to be the jist of it.

i recently heard that the rock the vote team sent out flyers to young voters with the words "you've been drafted" on them. i know there intent is to say, you have a voice and if you don't use it, anything can happen, BUT is that not somewhat partisan considering that there are rumers out there that bush will reinstate the draft? to me it seems a little fishy.
personally, i find it appalling that major companies (mtv, burger king, ect) are becoming political machines. yes, i know they have the right to free speech and to do whatever they desire, but doesn't it seem like this is going a little too far? i mean, when i want to eat a burger i don't want political commentary on the side. that's just my view. i know this election is bringing out everyone's opinions', but i sometimes one has to keep thier political views at home and not take them to work. anybody with me? or if you have a differant view, please express this.

Yeah puppy, Both the Republican and Democrat parties are working to register people to vote. Some organizations like Rock the Vote which I think is MTV sponsored are helping to register young voters who have been disenfrantised in previous elections. Also they are making sure that in this election minorities are not disenfrantised as it was in the 2000 elections.

I have heard things that both parties have done. The one you mentioned in your post was an experience that Quik related to us. I got an email from a so-called Christian organization where they said Kerry had been excommunicated which I knew to be a falsehood. It apalled me that a Christian organization would spread lies like that to get people to vote for Bush. It just isn't right.

Anyone who attempts to register you and tells you that you have to vote Democratic or Republican is wrong to do that. They miss the whole point of what they are out there to do which is to get people registered to vote period. Who they vote for is their own business. If someone tells you that you have to vote for either party report it online to the Democratic National Committee at their website or to the Repbulican National Committee at their web site. Of course you would be reporting to the DNC that you were told you had to vote for Republicans and to the RNC if you are told you have to vote for a Democrat to register.

But if someone just offers to register you to vote and then after you do they give you Kerry or Bush pamphlets that is okay I think. That just means they want you to know what the candidate stands for on the issues. As long as they don't tell you that you HAVE to vote for any particular candidate it is okay. We all get pamphlets and things in the mail and on the streets during an election. That is one of the ways the candidates campaign. They want us to be informed of their views on the issues.

I think Rock The Vote goes where they know young people hang out. Places like Burger King, McDonalds, etc. Also malls and arcades and college campuses.
