well thats way different....

they used mohammed in a turban with a bomb on his head...in the quran its not allowed to use mohammed's image...unlike in christianity where they use it on almost anything...(dont think its allowed either but they do it anyways)
anyways, it was a slap in the face to muslims, like its not hard enough with world events over there...

you cant really compare these 2 different instances and say its the same...

Actually in Judaism images are just as forbidden, but mostly of God and angels. But i know what your saying. Still its very disturbing for this to be printed

I understand what you mean by this cartoon BornUD.

But come on!! Is this guy seriously crying over his appearance???? Ive seen some Jews that look like the Jewish cartoon character.

And eatbooks I agree the world events in Muslim countries is much different than in our so called "free societies" who are not embroiled in constant war and poverty.

I agree its not near as offensive. Its one thing to make fun of 'Joe Shmoe Orthodox Jewish person' and another to make fun of a PROPHET of a religion. Suppose the cartoon was of Moses naked or some other kind of DEEP insult to the Jewish religion, maybe making fun of the concept of Yahweh? or making fun of the temple, then it would be comparable, but just an unknown cartoon figure, versus Mohammad? Oh come on.

There have been several cartoons of Osama bin laden and ordinary Muslim/Arab men , most media caricatures and even Disney movies show Arabs and Muslim (aladdin anyone?) in this WEIRD back@ss way as if we're all flying around on carpets and bellydancing yet repressed sexual freaks who eat our children alive and cut off peoples hands for looking at us weird, we speak this mysterious language and have way too much oil money but we're too dumb to graduate high school (ROLLS EYES) only seen it like a thousand times.

People dont burn flags over that kind of ordinary common discrimination. That is not even considered racism to most Arabs/Muslims.

People burn flags when you insult their prophet--the prophet that makes their religion separate from every other religion in the world, the prophet who cannot be insulted or cussed by any Muslim (by Islamic moral code) , the prophet that was tortured by the Arabs and whose name is today, the world's first most common name in the entire world population.

It is not even comparable.

Actually i found a lot more cartoons. They are actually quite common in both Europe and Middle East this was just one of those examples. I dont know though whether one can say that because of the issues in the Middle East that justifies the reaction that the cartoon of Mohammed gave. They had every right to be outraged, they didnt have the right to burn down embassies. Plus i dont think you can say events exuse it. Such racist cartoons are wrong against ANYONE. Period. Jews, Muslims, Christian or Buddhist its an abuse of freedom of speech regardless.

quote:

I can find you plenty of those...actually to me this was an experiment...and obviously yielded the results I expected...rather than eb shocked and appauled all you guys are trying to downplay it and say "hey its not as bad"...well yea it kind of is...and this crap will never end because someone somewhere will be downplaying something...what about those Anti-American cartoons in almost every Arab nation...say someone isnt religious, in fact atheist but deeply nationalistic. Would they not hurt them as much as they hurt someone's religious views. There are people who treat nationalism as a religion and they would feel as strongly...i dont remember Iranian embassies being burned, or any other Arab country for such thing...

Im saying while everyone should be outraged over EVERY such cartoon ("injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" - MLK jr.) violence isnt the answer and only gets people believing the stereotypes they already hoarded.

I strongly STRONGLY STRONGLY disagree with you that it isnt comparable...it is allo based on individual...if i feel insulted by something like that MORE than I would if you insulted my religion (very true for me personally) you are in NO position to tell me that I SHOULD BE less insulted than my friends over that cartoon. Heck no...if im insulted im insulted, and no one has the right to downplay my personal feelings...its my reaction to it that differs...and believe me people are as insulted as Muslims were...if your not that religious ull be more insulted if someone does something with your culture or politics or what not. I think everyone should be EQUALLY appauled at such things...

P.S. Such cartoons in Europe led up to the creation of numerous stereotypes that were a contributing factor to the holocaust... So insulting the entire population is more damaging than insulting the Prophet (pbuh) since he cannot be hurt...and being a prophet, an insult against him is a crime against God, which God himself will punish. I find it amazing how some people attack others if someone insulted God...as if God needs defending

The Mohammad cartoon and the other cartoons I talked about (and accompanying media) accomplishes the dehumanization of Arabs and Muslims, and basically anyone Middle Eastern, justifying hatred against this 'vague but huge' number of people that many Americans do not even know exactly WHERE these people are from. That might explain why a Sikh in Texas was clubbed (almost to death) after 911. LOL sorry as sad as that is, a Sikh?? Because they have beards and wear turbans doesnt mean they are brothers of the Arabs, that is just hilarious.

And how you can assume that the Jewish cartoon insults the entire population while the Danish one doesnt insult the entire muslim population is beyond me. An affront to Mohammad is an affront to everyone in the Muslim Ummah because HE is the reason we are muslim. If mohammad hadnt come around we would have been idol worshippers or some other religious denomination. His sunnah and hadith is how we say our prayers. His sunnah and hadith tells us how to eat, bathe ourselves, pray for ourselves and our families, how to conduct ourselves. The Quran lays the guidelines, but Mohammads sayings and mohammads actions guide a thing as little as what to say after a sneeze (yarhamokomollah) to how to perform Salat or Hajj.

He is a MAJOR figure and he influences every aspect ouf our daily life. To say that insulting him is only an insult to the basis of the religion or God and not to the humans that follow his every action, name themselves after him, or were related to him (several Muslims consider themselves Sayyed) is just completely...inaccurate to say the least.

The image is damaging becaues so many muslims are named mohammad and follow him. Simply put, it dehumanized the entire race AND insulted our religion at the same time. While this Jewish cartoon only manages to do one, which is dehumanize the Jews. It doesnt point fingers at the Jewish religion. Most Muslim aimed cartoons insult both Muslims as a group and the religion as a basis, double whammy.

And yes we are taught that God deals punishments for things directed at him but Islam expressly says man is God's vicegerent on earth: we are here to uphold our love for God. If we cannot defend our love of him (not HIM, he doesnt need our defense) , then do we really love him ? It is our love of Mohammad and our love of Allah that makes Muslims angry. Since we are children we are told that if we speak DISRESPECTFULLY (not question, questioning is OK) but if you INSULT the prophet or Allah, then you deserve to have your tongue pulled out. Because if you dont want to believe in them, fine. Dont. But dont disrespect a religion that has become a way of life for over a billion people.

That goes for any religion, truly. Are you gonna tell me you've never seen a political cartoon of any Arabs? Because I've seen plenty. And I don't believe anyone was angry over them...maybe a little annoyed, but not up in arms.

I remember the Muhammad "incident". Although I'm not Islamic myself, my grandfather says alot of people back at home were angry....whicH is understandable. The difference is between a prophet and a person.

Kinda like the cartoons I posted up...its all rather sad but its precisly what it all does. I just wish you would agree that all such racial cartoons fit the profile you just described, not just ones about Mohammed.

quote:
That might explain why a Sikh in Texas was clubbed (almost to death) after 911. LOL sorry as sad as that is, a Sikh??

Yea and not just a Sikh...a few Mexicans got beat up not far from my school because they are tanned and people are going through panic attacks. Such stories DISGUST me beyong anything.

quote:
And how you can assume that the Jewish cartoon insults the entire population while the Danish one doesnt insult the entire muslim population is beyond me.

When the heck did i say that...i said the opposite of that and in fact asked you the exactly same question...

quote:

Pardon me but your arguing with yourself...I was simply pointing out how you said that because the cartoons are against an ethnicity and not the religion its not as serious...to which i replied what about the people who dont follow religion?

quote:
It is not even comparable

Thats what bothered me...it is VERY comparable...

quote:
Simply put, it dehumanized the entire race AND insulted our religion at the same time. While this Jewish cartoon only manages to do one, which is dehumanize the Jews. I

Well to Jews religion and race are intertwined to the point that there is no way to destinguish anymore that is why your statement is blatantly false...

quote:
And yes we are taught that God deals punishments for things directed at him but Islam expressly says man is God's vicegerent on earth: we are here to uphold our love for God.

And may i ask how burning buildings and plundering is any way of upholding one's love for God?

quote:
It is our love of Mohammad and our love of Allah that makes Muslims angry.

How can love make anyone angry? Are you honestly telling me there were no better ways of approaching the situation? Im sure your not saying that. There are ways to defend what you love without destroying anyone else. Its that mentality of zero-sum that screws everything up.

quote:
That goes for any religion, truly. Are you gonna tell me you've never seen a political cartoon of any Arabs? Because I've seen plenty.

Oh of course ive seen them and have always been disgusted. Which is what i said. But I dont think being up in arms is ever an exuse unless you are faced with immediate danger. I thought the response was utterly overkill...but mostly i put up the cartoon to try to agree with the opposing side that ALL such cartoons are damaging...all i got (which is what i expected) was a statement of "yea well thats not as bad as when they insulted us..." so until that mentality is canned, we will all get no where...

quote:
I remember the Muhammad "incident". Although I'm not Islamic myself, my grandfather says alot of people back at home were angry....whicH is understandable. The difference is between a prophet and a person.

Oh come on...yes there is a difference but why does that difference make offending someone okay?

Well here is one from Oman poking fun at the Jewish prophet Abraham and him sacraficing his son Issac...so does this make for good reasons to raise in arms? I mean Abraham is a prophet so this isnt making fun of a person anymore...I think that ALL such cartoons are wrong REGARDLeSS! Making fun of politics is one thing, attacking an entire race/ethnicity/religion is wrong ALWAYS!

Yeah, I agree that the above cartoon is a bit much but mostly because of the depiction of God. You see that they didn't use the prophet Abraham, they used George Bush. I think the idea was to shine light on how Bush's "War on terror" really is (ie. Iraq) and to depict him as a "false prophet/leader" (hence him replacing Abraham). I don't think it was an attack on Judaism at all.
